"It may well be that we spectators, who are not divinely gifted as athletes, are the only ones able to truly see, articulate and animate the experience of the gift we are denied. And that those who receive and act out the gift of athletic genius must, perforce, be blind and dumb about it -- and not because blindness and dumbness are the price of the gift, but because they are its essence." - David Foster Wallace

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Ringu
As a huge fan of the American remake, I enjoyed the cryptic feel that foreign horror films bring to the table by nature, but this film was more of a slow-burn thriller than a horror film, at least compared to The Ring. It only clocked a little past 90 minutes, so it kind of went from beginning to end before I knew it, but I enjoyed some story elements in this film far more to The Ring, as well as the character connections. I thought The Ring explained some things better, for how they were at least, but I suppose that's why there are more sequels and origin stories within the novels and other films from Japan, which I want to dig into a little bit.
Overall, looking at it as a single film versus The Ring, I preferred The Ring more overall. It was sort of the first of its kind to introduce a creepy child in a long while, there were a lot of disturbing things in it (the faces, the horses, the bugs, the suicides), and felt to be a much more complete film and story in the end. A lot of elements were much more supernatural, at least as opposed to what Japanese tradition would consider Ringu to be a part of a culture basis, but for the sake of the story itself, I think I'm more than understanding about that kind of psychosis.
It amazed me how much was similar to The Ring, yet how much was actually different. Both are still very creepy in their own right, and I want to see if the other films remain creepy as well.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

I just watched 3 HBO films: Mich vs OSU The Rivalry, Jeter 3K, and Lombardi.
All I can say is HBO is fantastic at making sports documentaries. I loved them all."You got it man. I don't watch hockey." SidVish"I thought LeBron James was just going to be another addition to help me score."

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I'm gonna have to check these out. Is it just me (I don't live in the US so don't have access to HBO other than online and buying series on dvd/BR etc) or does just about everything HBO touches at the moment turn to gold? So many good series etc at the moment and in the last few years.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
The Informant!
Despite Damon's commitment to this project, I thought this was a pretty boring true story to write a film off of, despite many other things out there that could be written about. It would have been a nice unfolding event to follow in the 90s if I were interested in corporate fraud exposure, but as a film it only feeds intrigue with its characters.
And the characters weren't even that bleak, either. Damon's character was pretty engaging, and what was funny was that he was also the narrator yet he kept certain truths from us unknowingly throughout the film. I guess that's just the mindset of a bipolar character, and we saw the world through his eyes. The color tones, the awkward dialogue exchanges, the musical pieces, and the lighting work were all a figment of the main character's views.
So, the real issue was that this is not a fictional piece, yet it was disguised as one. It seemed like a surreal environment, something unlike what we'd perceive in our world (kind of like a tamer version of The Other Guys, when it comes to that vibe). I don't feel like Steven Sodebergh's nose belonged in this film. His directing brought some fascinating artistic merit, but this was the wrong story to tell along with it (combined with the fact that it's based on real life events, so it was kind of hogwash).
Anyway, as the centerpiece of this film is very bland, I would recommend staying away from it. All trailers, highlighted reviews, etc. would be misleading if they made you believe this film is full of comedy, entertainment, and vivacity. It's quirky, but doesn't hold a candle to its built up expectations.Last edited by Blzer; 08-06-2011, 05:55 PM.Samsung PN60F8500 PDP / Anthem MRX 720 / Klipsch RC-62 II / Klipsch RF-82 II (x2) / Insignia NS-B2111 (x2) / SVS PC13-Ultra / SVS SB-2000 / Sony MDR-7506 Professional / Audio-Technica ATH-R70x / Sony PS3 & PS4 / DirecTV HR44-500 / DarbeeVision DVP-5000 / Panamax M5400-PM / Elgato HD60Comment

Super. A darker (sometimes disturbing) version of KickAss. Over the top violence is the word of the day. Definitely a different side of Ellen Page than her role in Inception. The protagonist is the only one that really gets any character development.Comment

Just saw Adjustment Bureau. That was a confusing movie at the beginning but then it all comes together at the end which, to me, was a dissapointing ending... 3/5 stars"In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened." - Vin Scully

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Watched Soul Surfer tonight and really enjoyed it a really uplifting true story and the surfing scenes were done great plus it was well acted. Blu-ray picture looked fantastic really colorful. Some may say it's too sentimental and hopeful but's what's wrong with that as sometimes you need a break from all the doom and gloom movies."If you don't have anything good to say, say it often"- Ed the sockComment
