Re: What movies have you seen recently?
21 Jump Street. Wasn't sure what to expect going in. Enjoyed it. Reminded me a lot of The Other Guys. Easy recommend.
The Man From Nowhere. Good storyline and great (read brutal) action scenes. I watched it Korean with English subs. Definitely worth 1 watch, not sure I'd want to watch multiple times though.Comment

SpoilerAfter Steve's death, it just went too over the top in the end, for me. I wasn't a huge fan of the CGI near the end either.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
It wasn't terrible or anything but I think I'm just not destined to like a movie that uses that 'hand held camera' type view because I have watched 3 that were all pretty popular (Blair Witch, Cloverfield and now chronicle) and haven't really enjoyed any of them.Comment

Just Go With It Decent movie I guess. one of the movies that withing 20 minutes I could predict almost exactly how it would end. Had some good laughs in it. like I said, decent watch, wouldn't watch it again though.Comment

The Innkeepers
I didn't see a trailer or anything going in. I did watch it afterwards and if you haven't seen one that's better. The first 20 minutes or so is mostly fun. Then there's some humor mixed with tension. Then it gets straight up intense. There's really only 3 characters so it was easier to be intrested in them. Seriously, the entire cast fits on the first bit of the credits. It's a haunting movie so there's not a lot of action and of course it does away with the "oh most of these people are going to die anyway" feeling of most horror movies. I suggest pausing and reading whatever the character is read on screen, there's not a lot of questions answered flatout and it's open to interpretation so that stuff helps.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Sadat (1983 TV Miniseries)
This was a 2 part TV movie that presumably aired on CBS (it was backed by Columbia Pictures sooo...) and believe me you, i've been trying to find this for a very long time. I happened to have found it on youtube a couple weeks ago and watched it this week.
First a little background on why I watched this, Anwar Sadat is a bit of an enigmatic figure to me as there isn't a biography in print and his autobiography from '78 is long out of print as well. Jimmy Carter has spoken a great deal about him and former Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin vis a vis the Camp David Accord but you know how self serving Carter can be about that so it's a little hard to get a good idea of everything. This TV movie isn't that much help but it's very interesting to see how Sadat is presented to an American audience.
In this TV movie Sadat is played by Louis Gossett Jr. which was perfect casting IMO. There was no one else of stature in Hollywood at the time that could possibly play Sadat and Gossett pretty much nailed it for the most part. The only issue about his acting that I had was that his body language really didn't change too much with the passage of time and I found his vocalization to be slightly off compared to the real life Sadat.
The first half of the movie dealt with Sadat's time imprisoned by the British after being involved with a violent anti-British movement and his subsequent release where he meets his wife and hooks up with Gamal Abdel Nasser who eventually leads a movement that overthrows the British backed monarch and installs himself as president of Egypt. Let me stop here and just say that John Rhys-Davies who plays Nasser absolutely OWNS the first half of the film. Davies had a very effective Egyptian accent, had the general aura of Nasser and totally dominated the film. In some ways he overshadowed Gossett but Gossett is not to be outdone as there are excellent scenes of him confiding to his wife, working/conflicting with Nasser and making a niche for himself.
The film makers did the best they could with the first half of the movie as the real life Sadat was very much in the background and while he did clash with Nasser he did so in a way that would keep him close to the top of the power structure yet be in the background. That being said the part where it concerns the Suez Canal crisis was pretty good as Sadat didn't know a thing about it and Gossett does a great job portraying his surprise and some dismay. The scenes involving the run up and execution of the Six Day War were also excellent as there was a scene where Sadat advises against it but Nasser goes ahead with it anyways with the threat that if it works Sadat may very well wind up dead. Well it looks to be working and Sadat/Gossett does a wonderful job of showing his pleasure and happiness at the results but Nasser absolutely chews him out only to find out later that the Israelis have stemmed the tide and thus Nasser resigns as president in disgrace.
The 2nd half of the film opens up in 1970 when Nasser dies suddenly of a heart attack and Sadat officially becomes the new president of Egypt. This is where the portrayal of Sadat was very interesting to see as the American film makers painted Sadat as a strong nationalist who chafed against the partnership with the Soviet Union and thus kicking the Soviets out of Egypt due to their meddling in Egyptian affairs. Sadat was also painted as a strong husband to his wife and someone who was trying to modernize Egypt with a western style economic policy. Despite that though, the film makers had to show his planning and execution of the Yom Kippur war and thus some of the anti-Israeli rhetoric was tough for a protagonist. I did like what they did to show Sadat's about face though using the death of his brother in the war as the turning point of Sadat realizing that the ages old fighting between Arabs and Jews was futile. There's a wonderful scene as Sadat talks over the corpse of his brother and realizes the fighting was all for naught as he cries over the loss of his brother.
The rest of the movie was fairly predictable with the Egypt-Israeli peace agreement and such. I did like how they portrayed Sadat's visit to Israel and how it was a significant moment not only for Sadat but for the Israeli-Egypt conflict. Menachem Begin was played wonderfully by Barry Morse and the one scene where Morse and Gossett interacts was a true highlight as Begin and Sadat meet at Camp David and realizes that what they're about to do is bigger than them, that it's for the good of mankind.
I thought this was a pretty good movie considering it was a TV film. Gossett was quite strong and personally I think it's one of his very best performances period. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for his performance. I thought that Sadat was lionized a bit as the movie really swept some of the uglier parts under the rug a bit and Sadat's turn around towards peace was a bit too much of an about face but all in all it was very good. The funny thing is, this movie was met with strong criticism in Egypt and was banned outright. They thought Sadat was portrayed as too pro western etc etc though the possible true reason for the film's lack of success was racism against Gossett for playing Sadat as they couldn't abide a black man playing the part. In 2001 an Egyptian film about Sadat was made and it's one of the highest grossing Egyptian films ever. I plan to watch that at some point. I'm sure there will be quite a bit of difference in how Sadat is portrayed which I think is appropriate, Sadat was a complicated man but I think it's fitting that his story can be tailor made for two very different audiences.
The supporting actors were very good especially Rhys-Davies who steals the show and I wish there was more of him actually!
Anywho I give this about 3 out of 4 stars

The Whistleblower:
I thought it was slow and at no point did it really grab my attention. There are some disturbing scenes but for a political drama I found the dialog to be weak and the film never clicked for me.

The Hunger Games.
If I hadn't of read the book beforehand, I would've probably liked this a little more. It wasn't a bad movie, but man, they definitely changed some key things from the book (I just finished a couple of days ago) that left me scratching my head.
Woody Harrelson was a good choice for Haymitch, I'll say that.Currently Playing:

The Innkeepers - Started off very slow but eventually picked up. Had a genuinely creepy feel to it. My girl screamed out loud a couple of times so take that for what its worth. Ending was a little sketchy but doesn't ruin the movie at all.

XIII. Decent gov't conspiracy/action movie. A poor man's Bourne Ultimatum, which made it too predictable. The hand to hand combat was good though.Comment
