    Finding Nemo

Wife and I watched this on Blu-ray last night. It was actually my first time ever seeing this movie. It wasn't my favorite Disney-Pixar movie, but I enjoyed it a lot. Found myself laughing out loud at quite a few scenes. Movie looked absolutely gorgeous on Blu-ray on my plasma and Darbee.

It is, imo, by far the best looking CGI film made to this point. It's an absolutely beautiful film. The only things I've seen come close to the beauty of it is Planet Earth and Avatar.

Not gonna do a big review for these two but here goes:

The Secret of Convict Lake (1951)

          Storyline:

Jim Canfield, convicted of a crime he did not commit, escapes a Nevada prison with several hardened criminals. He leads them to the small farming community home of the man who not only framed him, but committed the crime. But Jim's plans for revenge are put on hold when he discovers that the local men have all joined the posse in the convict's pursuit, leaving their women behind. He soon becomes attracted to the beautiful and resourceful Marcia, who turns out to be the fiance of the man who framed him. Can Jim protect the women from his less-civilized comrades, fall under Marcia's humanizing influence and still maintain his murderous resolve?
Not a bad Glenn Ford movie. He plays the Canfield character pretty well but he's overshadowed by Zachary Scott who plays one of the other convicts who believes that there's money there that Ford has hiding and will go so far as to kill Ford to get it. Scott is pretty damn sleazy and conniving in his role even to the point of seducing the sister of the man Ford is gunning after. (the man fingered Ford for killing someone for 40K and he ends up taking the money for himself) Another one of the convicts is a young guy who "innocently" falls for one of the younger women in the town but it turns out that he's more than what he lets on.
          Spoiler

This is a very melodramatic film and a lot of it is setup for the climax which delivers in spades but I found all the melodramatic storytelling and set up made the movie a little slow moving but again the explosive ending makes up for it but not enough to lift this film into the 3-4 star level but rather it's a 2 1/2 star flick that with better pacing would definitely be 3 stars to me. It's definitely something to seek out if you're interested in Ford.

          Inferno (1953)

          Storyline:

A tough, hard-driving business tycoon suffers a broken leg and is left to die in the desert by his scheming wife and her greedy lover.
This was released in the midst of the '50s 3D craze and while I only saw this in 2D it's still quite effective. I gotta say as far as the use of 3D is concerned this was one of the more self restrained flicks and it didn't go over the top with it.

Anywho, this is a pretty interesting "survival in nature" type thriller and you can even classify it as a noir as the film is populated by seedy characters. Robert Ryan plays the millionaire tycoon left out in the desert to die by his wife and her younger lover. Ryan does an amazing job considering that 90% of what he did on the film was him narrating his thoughts as he struggled to survive. The movie cross cuts to Ryan's wife played by Rhonda Fleming and her lover played by William Lundigan and their scheme to put the authorities off the scent so that Fleming would end up inheriting Ryan's money and marry Lundigan.

It's a pretty good flick and while it's not particularly fast moving you learn about the characters but NOT through flashback like most movies like this would but rather you learn through their actions and the dialogue. Ryan isn't exactly a sympathetic guy as he was described as not getting along with anyone and he's basically a drunken boor of a man. It's amazing how they get the audience to sympathize with him as he's left to die.

One last thing, it's refreshing to see that at the end of his ordeal Ryan's character undergoes a change in character and becomes a better man after what he's been through. It's done in a very organic and believable way.

          2 1/2 stars.

            The Fountain

            Umm..WTF am I watching?

Bronson - Hardy and Gosling need to tag-team Refn and do a spy vs. spy type of movie. Give it to us! Hardy is amazing in this. I really don't know what else to say because this movie is a little deranged - as intended.

The Fountain - Pretty good. I liked the structure of the story and while the story itself was kind of mediocre and straight-forward I felt like everything else picked up the slack. Great movie.

I'm a fan of The Fountain, assuming we're talking about the same film in which Hugh Jackman stars. Pretty cool.

I refuse to think that that's the same movie you watched for the simple reason that Darren Aronofsky directed the Jackman film and there's NOTHING straight forward about his movies.

Ugh, The Fountain? I think I saw that. I don't know if I posted about it in here, but I don't recall loving it (I think the present day stuff might have been fine, but damn I forgot that movie even existed).

Haha I actually kinda liked it for that very reason. I enjoyed it very much visually as well. The scenes in space and in the supernovae (I think that's what it was) were stunning, and I thought the parallel storytelling method worked out in an interesting way.

On a side note, I just watched Hanna last night. I liked it. Some cool action scenes, and I liked how it played into the seeming contradiction of the innocence and sweetness of a young girl whose purpose is essentially to be a trained killer.

I don't think its as far "out there" as the parallel time-periods suggest. The basic storyline and motivation is pretty simple, but how its put together is what makes the movie good.

Earth Girls Are Easy - I...um. Yeah. I have to give the cast props for doing this because as ridiculous as it is the movie is kind of fun and quirky in a Heavy Metal meets Encino Man kind of way. Geena Davis is underrated and she is pretty damn sexy in this. The blonde hair/blue eyes look she sports for a scene early on is crazy because of how different she looks and how much of a bombshell she is.

A League of Their Own -
Classic is a classic. Geena Davis is nice, but her character is kind of flat compared to the rest of the cast with their obvious quirks. Madonna is a nice surprise and Rosie O'Donnell manages to not be annoying somehow. I dislike the ending because I really, really disliked Kit and her contrived "second place" syndrome, but oh well. John Lovitz is hilarious to carry the beginning, but man Tom Hanks - I love him in his little comedy roles. I mean, I remember him more from Dragnet and Turner & Hooch than I do from Castaway.
