    Gangs of New York.

I remember watching this when it first came out. I mean Daniel Day-Lewis was the draw for every movie he was in. But I remember coming away without much favor for it. So I gave it a second chance. Again, I just found the level of violence and continued butchering incredulous. It's just way overdone.

It prompted me to find what many would consider a reliable source (sorry Wikipedia) as to what that place at that time might really be like. I think this is a good, concise read:

I liked it. Harry Osbourn has some acting chops.

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I did like it in the end. It just took me awhile to process wtf was going on after the first hour and what direction the movie was actually going in.

And yeah, Dane DeHaan seems to own everything I've seen him in so far (this, Lawless and Chronicle). Definitely excited for him as Harry in Amazing Spider-Man 2.

Watched an interesting though flawed Glenn Ford western called The Last Challenge (1967). The bulk of it is quite good especially the interaction between the two lead actors but Angie Dickinson's character dampened some of it for me.

Was more like a 3 act play than a movie. But they never tell you that. Far as I remember from the trailers there was only one scene ever shown from act 2 and all the rest are from act 1. The first part is great. The second part was kinda meh. The third part seemed pretty bad, then as if it would redeem itself to be wonderful and then gets sunk by the ending. Rent it and turn it off after the first part.

Brick- It's on Netflix streaming, thought it was a movie that tries way too hard to be cute and ends up being entirely predictable, and cliche.

It really was and that's what threw me off since I seen the one trailer for it and nothing else.

The second act was probably the worst part of the movie but I feel like a lot of that has to do with the fact that you're still trying to process where the hell the movie is going at that point.

Once things get pieced back together in the third act, I think it regained a lot of the potential it was showing in the first act, especially with Dane DeHaan's performance. I think they could have made Avery's son (aka fat-faced Channing Tatum lookalike) a lot less obnoxious but I guess that's what they were going for.

Gosling as another psychotic drifter with a driving fetish is always money in the can and he delivers - as usual. Cooper is good, but kind of forgettable in comparison to the other performances. Its a great dramatic film. Early favorite of the year for me.

Well, most movies have the same act structures as plays though with this film it is more obvious about it than most with the time jumps. Trailers are compiled similarly, too.

Overall I felt the thematic elements hung over the final 2/3 of the movie much more apparently than the first half or so as the story was pretty much fueling them from that point on. Plus, once Gosling's story is done it loses that spark from performance until DeHaan comes into the fold.

I didn't like Cooper or his son, but that was intentional. I think their performances were good, but the story was more slanted towards Gosling and DeHaan.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

I TRIED watching a movie that starred Donald Sutherland and Charles Durning. You'd think those two would make a good movie but NOOOOO The Rosary Murders (1987) was pure CRAP. Hell, Elmore Leonard was one of the scripters so you'd think the dialogue would be good too, NOPE!

I'm not even bothering to put this on my blog either because if i'm gonna approach it somewhat professionally I should at least watch a movie all the way through. I turned this sucker off after the halfway point. Sutherland sleepwalks through it, staring into space and basically being bored. There's an unnecessary and STUPID subplot where a reporter falls in love with him and he's a priest! Luckily they didn't have Sutherland breaking his vow of celibacy.

The whole murder plot/investigation is followed through in a confusing, turgid and slow manner. Look, I can understand a movie setting an atmosphere and being a bit slow but this flick crossed the line into skull numbing boredom.

It's just a horrid horrid movie. If you run across it DON'T WATCH IT. This gets a dud rating.

I think it lost a lot more than that. There was a ton of great little things, subtley and nuance in the first part that seemed to entirely disappear in the others. Like how Gosling only owned 2 shirts and wore one of them inside out.

I saw Oblivion last night. I didn't really like it much. The drones were annoying and Tom Cruise has got to be one of the most overrated actors ever. None of his movies besides Top Gun & The Last Samurai impresses me...I give this movie a 6/10.

Sure was nice to look at. Plot wise much of it felt unnecessary. There was some good stuff, really enjoyed the plot twist, well the non-obvious one. This would've been a classic as a season 4 Twilight Zone episode. (Hour long episodes that season.) As is it's just an ok movie that looks really great.
