E.T. is a great movie but I think Dan has a point. It's so much of an '80s movie and one that takes such a picayune view of aliens that it comes across as being just a tad too innocent. He's right though, that if he had seen it years earlier he'd probably like it a lot more like most of us who've seen it as kids or whatnot.

    At least that's my interpretation

      The Double

I once joked about seeing the movie by watching the trailer on YouTube. This is the film that is infamously known for "revealing the ending twist in the trailer." Although it seems like it with its terrible marketing, this really isn't the case. The thing that people think is final twist is really just a plot revelation not thirty minutes into the film. Would have it been better if that was reserved for the film? Most definitely. Would have the trailer made the film be more enticing without showing that tidbit of information, despite the fact that it anchors what the rest of the film is about? I think so. Was the movie kind of bad either way? Unfortunately, yes.

It was poorly shot, poorly written, and poorly acted. There were a few moments where I seriously thought the actors were going to break the fourth wall and say to the camera: "Ha just kidding! But really, what if??" Richard Gere, Martin Sheen, Odette Annable, and even Topher Grace were all a waste of talent in this C-rated garbage thriller. It felt like a high school student's creative writing paper made into a film.

Really, this could all be because I wanted to watch the movie as a joke assuming I already knew the main twist in the film, so I can say that the trailers really did butcher the film for me in general. That unfortunately didn't change too much in the end, especially when I still feel like the trailer showed much more than it should have. This, of course, is one of the things that really always grinds my gears.

      Broken City

Not much to say about this film. It was boring. Maybe it doesn't bore people who are into political scandals, but it really just threw Mark Wahlberg and Russell Crowe under the bus when they just sat around and talked most of the time. When this film hit its half hour mark, it had signs of picking up. For the next fifteen minutes it was okay, but then afterward you kind of spend your time looking at the clock and wondering to what amount this thing would even last for. The title is hardly representative of the overall message of the film outside of the mayor election. When it tried to stand on its last legs by connecting the dots between characters, in the end it just resulted as a forgettable film that I'm glad I skipped out on in theaters.

Yeah Broken City isn't for everyone and actually I think the title does fit well for the film as the city is broken by the political scheming of the mayor and his underhanded tactics. Corruption is a major element of the film and thus the city and its institutions are marred by it.

Eh, I guess. It just portrays it very microscopically. They talk about the village and all of that, but not the lasting effects of the inhabitants themselves. It's like how The Dark Knight Rises kind of lost Gotham as a character compared to that of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight.

Ya, but isn't that ending just weird.... I dunno..... seemed out of place (esp. Pesci).

              Heritage of the Desert (1932)

So i'll be watching as many movies in Randolph Scott's filmography as I can and I start with this one, his first starring role in a western. It's not a bad little film as it has very good acting throughout and while the plot is a bit of well worn trope it's done expertly enough. It's also the feature film directorial debut of Henry Hathaway who helmed a lot of Westerns mainly starring John Wayne. Even early in his first film Hathaway has some directorial flourishes that set this movie apart from most films of the period.

So it was nice to see a young Randy Scott and the ensemble cast did very well. I've written a lot more on the blog of course.

Pacific Rim: One of this year's best Blockbusters without a doubt. For anyone who loves giant monster movies- one of the most niche genres in cinema- this film is nothing short of magical. If you've ever forgotten, even for a second, why you love watching colossal beasts knocking over buildings and causing mayhem, Pacific Rim will remind you, loudly, beautifully, and intelligently. Even if kaiju aren't your bag, this works. And you don't have to be a Del Toro enthusiast to get what he's doing here.

I disagree. This movie did not have the same affect on me as it did to u. I hated Pacific Rim.

The Mrs. had never seen this movie, so she suggested we watch it last night. This movie came out when I was a freshman in college, and yeah, I saw it more than once

Last night was the first time I had seen the movie in at least five years. I think that may have been the last time I'll watch the movie. It was a little painful to watch. I'd rather just remember the good times I had with my buddies watching this when I was 18 than actually re-watch the film again.

                        The Dirty Dozen.

It's a shame that those stars couldn't have had made this movie in more recent times, because I don't think you can remake this movie and it have the same appeal. There just are no more Clint Walkers, etc. It really is a strange collection of actors for this cast. I mean a war movie with Donald Sutherland and Jim Brown? But the real appeal in this flick for me is the lead: Lee Marvin. He so incredibly believable and every scene with him is tremendous. The only thing I never really paid attention to when I saw this in earlier years was how poor some of editing was done. Other than that, this is a war movie that if anyone in the younger generations has not seen, you should.

                          LOVE this movie.

You're right....Sutherland...classic. Reviewing the troops...kills me every time.
                          Walker....perfect.
But Cassavetes as the instigator and then Savalas as the psycho....phenomenal.

Great great movie! Haven't seen it in a while though but it's a pretty damn fine flick. I think The Expendables was going for that Dirty Dozen atmosphere but it didn't quite hit the mark but at least Sly Stallone tried to make something that was a vague callback to a classic.

BTW I bet Lee Marvin's casting in The Delta Force probably had a lot to do with The Dirty Dozen as the characters while not being too similar had the same kind of gravitas to them. Interestingly that was his last film role.
