Re: What movies have you seen recently?

I've watched a handful of movies from

    DRUMROLL

the 2010s (I know shocker) So here's a short thought on each:

Arbitrage (2012): This is a pretty small movie budget wise but it's a well told story of Richard Gere being an investment/capital management guy whose trying to sell his company but has to cook the books on the other hand he ends up crashing and killing his mistress and tries to cover his tracks. It's a well done film with very good acting across the board. Gere can be very hit or miss but had his "A" game here.

Run All Night (2015): Was this movie a box office hit? I didn't hear TOO much about it but if it wasn't then I blame it for being part of the "Liam Neeson protects/saves his family" cycle of films because on its own merits this is a very good action film. Neeson captures the broken down, loser ex hitman character well. There's actually some depth to the character and it makes the film stand out as his son hates his guts but he still will do what he can to save him. I also want to mention the scene transitions in this flick. I don't know if some of the people involved were fans of GTA V because the transitions from one character to another especially early on was EXACTLY like the video game. In fact, a lot of the movie felt like a video game but it was done in a way that isn't too grating.

Captain America: Winter Soldier (2014): I decided to catch up a little on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I'm a bit sad that it took me so long to see this one as I LOVED IT! I love how Cap is torn and disturbed by the modern world's shades of gray but he fights on for the good of the people the only way he knows how. The interaction between Cap and Falcon was well done as well. I think I will enjoy those two as a team for a while. The film makers billed this as a "70s political thriller dressed up as a superhero film". I can see that but it still tilted a little too much towards the comic booky feel to me but that's alright as they at least tried to do something different.

Ant-Man (2015) I LOVED THIS! I had my doubts coming into this one but it turned out quite well. Scott Lang is a bit of a quirky/comedic character and so they kept the material light enough to suit him. In fact, the comedy was sprinkled liberally throughout but it didn't feel overwhelming and was actually an extension of Scott Lang's character and friends. I also marvel at technology the anti-aging VFX at the beginning with Michael Douglas was mind blowing. He looked EXACTLY like himself in '89. Overall I thought this was great and with Deadpool being a huge success as well it seems that the more comedic heroes of the Marvel U if done properly will be good film properties.

Winter Solider and Ant-Man were by far my favorite Marvel movies not named X-Men, X-Men II and X-Men First Class.

I liked the first Avengers and I have yet to see Age Of Ultron (I will this weekend On-Demand). I also never watched either Thor movie. I also need to see the new X-Men flick as well.

Iron Man was enough. II and III were meh.

Taking my son to see the horror flick The Boy tonight.

I really dig the Thor movies; I think they were the easiest to have screwed up and they turned out great. I have a man-crush on Tom Hiddleston, I think he's an amazing actor and creates a fantastic Loki. I'd love for him to get his own film.

Also Natalie Portman looks amazing in both films, and the casting of her, Hopkins (what a great Odin!), Hiddleston, Hemsworth and Skaarsgard is fantastic.

I've only seen the first Thor movie, that's enough for me.

It will be interesting to see how Doctor Strange translates to film because that's one character that can be screwed up BIG TIME.

Lost River. Written and directed by Ryan Gosling. Not sure what to think of it, other than to say it was strange. The way it was shot, and the feel, reminded me of Only God Forgives. It kept me interested, but it was definitely an odd film.

The 2nd one left a lot to be desired. I've never liked Dr. Strange and all the mysticism crap as part of the Marvel universe.

Watched "Remember" with Christopher Plummer and Martin Landeau. These guys can still act well at their age. Engaging drama with some thriller moments. Everyone will also recognize Dean (I seem to always play a cop) Norris (Hank from Breaking Bad) who also has a critical role in this flick. I recommend this one with no reserves.

2nd Thor was trash, but Thor 1 was really good imo

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

I liked the first Thor more than the 2nd, and it had stronger direction and writing, but the second one is still really cool to me because of the interdimensional fighting stuff, and more Loki is always good.

It's always interesting with the post-Avengers stand alone films to watch them and figure out "Okay, why not assemble the team for this threat?"

With Thor 2....how could they help with all that? Selvig's devices are what saved the day.

With Winter Soldier....Cap actually did have some good help w/Black Widow and The Falcon...

With Iron Man 3....this seemed a real personal battle for Tony and too 'small scale' to require the Avengers. Plus it turns out Tony had his own 'army' as well as War Machine (kinda).

Ant Man...it was explained in the film when that question was brought up lol.

Didn't see a thread for this and don't necessarily want to start one, but good to see The Revenant get the awards it did. Spotlight was a well-deserved best picture winner. I'm suprised Jennifer Lawrence and Tom Hardy both got nixed. I saw Bridge of Spies and don't recall Mark Rylance's role as blowing me away. Very glad to see The Martian get totally shut out. I thought it was overhyped.

The Witch - I hated it. One of the worst movies I've ever watched.
That's not to mean that some won't like it. I think this film is for a very specific type of person. You have to really be into witch lore and fairy tales. Not Snow White, but the old-school, traditional fairy tales that were very grim and focused on personal sins and the evil spirits that will haunt you for them.
My biggest problem with the movie is that I didn't feel it was scary or suspenseful in the least. It was really quite boring. I kept waiting for it to pick up the pace, but it never did.
It's like it's in first gear for the whole movie, but will slide into neutral for long stretches as well.
If you're interested in it at all, wait for it to come out on video or the movie networks for free.
You're definitely not going to miss anything not seeing it in a large theatre atmosphere.

The Loft - This movie came out last year with little fanfare.
It's about 5 rich, middle-aged dudes who share a loft to keep their affairs discreet.
Then a dead body is found one morning. Things unravel at that point as the story becomes a classic Who Done It.
Really liked this movie. It's on Netflix right now.
