What movies have you seen recently?
Re-watched The Witch again (first time since I saw it in the theater). Let me tell you, the experience is MUCH enhanced if you view it with subtitles on and you don't go into it thinking it is going to be a straight-up horror movie. I bet I missed 3/5ths of the dialogue in the theater. It comes off more like a haunted, tragic fable when you know what is being said. And the acting is incredible.
Also finally saw Ex Machina. Very solid, really enjoyed the premise and the execution.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I watched a couple Spaghetti Westerns a couple days ago. (A Pistol for Ringo and The Return of Ringo) The latter film being a loose spinoff/sequel of the former. Both films starred Giuliano Gemma as the titular character of Ringo, a union soldier thought to be long dead. The productions of both films are pretty interesting to me as they used basically the same cast for both films but they're not really connected except for the broad strokes of Ringo being a long thought dead soldier. Not only are the films very loosely connected but the tone of each are completely different. The first film has the feel of a '50s western though with comedic touches while the latter is definitely closer to what you'd expect from a Spaghetti Western.
I enjoyed the first film a bit more because it had more action and there was a good subplot. The story is pretty simple, Ringo is in jail for a crime he committed but a ruthless mexican bandit gang robs the town bank and holes up in the home of the rich family in town who just so happens to have a daughter that the town's sheriff is set to marry and Ringo is tasked with the job of freeing them in exchange for 30% of the bank holdup money. The subplot involves her father being extra nice with the bandit's woman which eventually turns to both of them falling in love with each other. Despite the film mostly taking place in one location it's fairly well done and has a good pace to it. Gemma's pretty energetic and his character is pretty boisterous with a very cavalier attitude at times about who lives and dies.
The 2nd film is more somber and is slowed down by Gemma having to play a tortured soul but it's not too bad. Essentially he comes back to his hometown and finds out that a rich A-hole has taken it over for his own and on top of that he's forced Gemma's wife to be with him. It's pretty much a revenge western that well with the symbolism of a dying town being under the heel of a ruthless leader and his brother. It's pretty slow moving but the final action set piece is pretty good and worth sitting through the film for.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

The Magnificent 7. Very likable overall. The initial battle was stellar. Great cast. It is weird to see Ethan Hawke act as if he's a peer to Denzel after seeing them together in Training Day. Vincent D. probably played my favorite character. There were a few scenes that seemed disjunct but didn't detract from the overall movie.Comment

I just watched Dr. Strange and that movie is very mind boggling. It took me about 15 min to figure out what was going on in that movie.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
I watched one proto-blaxploitation and one film that's squarely in the blaxploitation genre last night:
Cotton Comes to Harlem (1970) This is a great flick with two very memorable black cops working together on a case involving a crooked preacher and there's a mystery surrounding his involvement/betrayal of a bunch of crazy guys and a bale full of raw unprocessed cotton with 87,000 dollars inside it. The plot gets a bit muddled but that's okay as the combo of Grave Digger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson were such great characters that it didn't matter. It didn't hurt that the fake arse preacher played by Calvin Lockhart was so charismatic as well. The movie portrays blacks of all strata and unlike how the blaxploitation genre would do in a couple years, they were all portrayed reasonably well. This was expected as the movie was written and co-scripted by Ossie Davis. If you haven't seen it you should check it out. The legendary Redd Foxx has a small but amusing part as well.
Slaughter (1972) Hoo boy, Jim Brown couldn't act quieter tender scenes to save his life but boy did he ever cut an imposing figure! He plays a former Green Beret who goes after the gangsters that killed his father. It's a bit far fetched as he's recruited by the government to work for them on the case in South America (This movie was so cheap that the confrontation scene between Brown and the government man in his office was filmed in what looked like a warehouse basement!) It's not a bad 90+ minutes and you've got some great overacting by Rip Torn as well as the easy on the eyes Stella Stevens to ogle at. I also want to make mention of one of the mob/gangster people named Felice. He's played by some guy named Norman Alfe. This was his only film role but it's quite memorable. He looked a lot like Tony Bennett back in the '70s and had the classic sandpapery/gravelly voice of stereotypical mob bosses. I loved every scene that guy was in.
Cotton Comes to Harlem is by far the better constructed and bigger budgeted film but Slaughter isn't bad either so they're both recommended.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

The Invitation
A coworker recommended this to me a while back. Saw that it was on Netflix so I gave it a shot. She told me to avoid any trailers before watching, which I did, and after finishing the movie that was probably for the best. Worth your time if psychological thrillers are your thing. Only thing that bugged me was I couldn't stop thinking how the lead actor reminded me of a knock off Tom Hardy. But that's more to do with me being weird than anything against the lead actor, who did a pretty job in the role.Comment

Captain America Civil War: Probably my 2nd favorite Marvel movie to date. GOTG is the first. I loved Ant Man and Spider-Man. I loved their reactions when they first got to the airport. Being all star struck and stuff. The fight scenes were great. Stan Lee's cameo was funny. And I thought that Wakanda (sp?) looked gorgeous and can't wait to hear more about Black Panther.

Everybody Wants Some!!
This was great. The banter had me cracking up throughout the movie. Every character was interesting in their own way. I was bummed it wasn't some 12 episode series instead of a movie when in was over. I could watch those guys shoot the **** for hours.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them - Obviously the first thing to do is compare this to the Harry Potter series. Comparing it to the first Harry Potter film and it's really no match up. Fantastic Beasts straddles the middle of the road without leaving much of an impression beyond its lead cast and fantastic, imaginative beasts. The wonderful world of Harry Potter feels underdeveloped and lacks the charm of its series. The final act relies too heavily on major CGI destruction as is the trend since Transformers.
Overall a decent film, but nothing that gets me too excited for a new series.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
The new Ghostbusters movie.
Snoozefest. I had really low expectations so I guess it was better than I thought it was gonna be.
I have never been a fan of Kate McKinnon and really disliked her character the most in this movie. Her trying to be the comic relief didn't do it for me. In fact Patty (the one I expected to dislike the most) was just fine.
Anyway, just didn't get into it but the graphics and colors were well done.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Suicide Squad- Liked Margot, Will, and Killer Croc. Liked the beginning, but then it fell off a cliff. Missed opportunity, Could/should have been a lot better.
War Dogs- Great. Really funny. I don't really like Miles Teller, but even that couldn't stop me from liking this movie. Jonah Hill's role was very funny, as usual.
Don't Breathe- I was never bored. Not really my cup of tea, but it was good for what it was.Comment

Re: What movies have you seen recently?
Moonlight - Went in not knowing much about the movie besides a couple of the actors and a one sentence synopsis. Great cinematography, shots, and music and interesting plot. I had mixed feelings about the movie upon leaving but after thinking on it further, really appreciated the storytelling, braveness of subject matter, and artistry of it.[NYK|DAL|VT]
