Agreed. For me, Searching for Bobby Fischer is definitely a 9 merely from the story telling stand point. The kid's performance is great too. So I wouldn't pay attention.

I don't really score my movies. I mean I will sometimes place them on IMDb, but I'm sure if I looked back, I'd wonder why I gave two different films a 7, one where I really liked one much more than the other. In the end, the score doesn't really help my reviews.

        That's why I just write a **** ton.

I don't know why but that last line made me laugh way more then it should have lol.

          Knives Out

This was a really solid movie that I liked a lot from start to finish. Loved the cast and just the way the story was told. Daniel Craig was messing me up with that accent. Kept thinking I was watching House of Cards [emoji23] [emoji23]. I think the hype train on this made it just a little less great then it should have been for me because I was expecting probably something unattainable based on word of mouth. Regardless it was a great movie and I'd love to see more like this get done.

Re: What movies have you seen recently?

Part of it is expectations, at this point in my life I don't watch a lot of trailers for movies that I plan to see (as a matter of fact I make a point of watching the trailers after I see the movie). For example the movie Tenet, I don't need to see a trailer for a Christopher Nolan movie since there is no doubt that I will see it so better to not even spoil a little bit of it by watching a trailer.

So I end up either watching trailers for movies I don't plan to see anyway (Black Widow, Fast & Furious 9, Dolittle, etc.) in which case the trailer ends up acting like a summary for it (at least the bad trailers) or movies which sound interesting but I wanna find out a little bit more (The Jesus Roll, Waves, Wendy, etc.). Clearly Jexi fell in the first class:

            <iframe src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/hwW1bqV4tyw" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen="" height="315" frameborder="0" width="560"></iframe>

That trailer told me that the movie is silly but uncomplicated and includes Michael Pena who can be hilarious. And I said to myself: like, why you gotta hate?, not everything needs to aspire to be Citizen Kane. And it helps that the movie is 84 minutes long, always a plus.

To my surprise it wasn't an unmitigated disaster and they actually managed to have a (mostly) coherent plot.

Regarding the "everything is a 6" thing, it does seems that way doesn't it? 6 is sort of my "it was fine" basket. No hate, it was "ok". And it make sense, these are high quality efforts which I tend to appreciate (Jojo Rabbit, A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood, Ford v Ferrari etc.) so they do tend to pile up at 6.

I feel the hang up isn't that those other films are a 6 (which is sort of a floor for me) but that Jexi, a film that seems of much lower quality, just being 1 point behind with a 5. Perhaps I need to do a better job differentiating at the lower end of the scale. I get that, but it is a 5 after all, and I didn't feel it was that horrible after all.

Why are my words typed out from your username?

But yes, I've mentioned it in this (or some other thread) before, and I won't stop. OS, seriously... try this. The next time you have a movie that you know you want to see, avoid every promotional/marketing bit of media as possible. I promise you that seeing the movie in full afterward is so much more rewarding.

Now, you may be asking how you know whether you want to see a movie without knowing anything about it.

Well, one way is as Master Live 013 said: sometimes you just know, like himself and myself with a Nolan film. Sometimes the cast, genre, or basic plot outline is enough. My mom catches a quick glimpse of a TV spot for some movie that has Julia Roberts and looks like a rom-com or something? She'll automatically say: "Oh, that looks good." She might not know anything else about it, but that's the selling point for her (for better or worse).

Speaking of plot outlines, when I tell somebody about a movie if they are interested in seeing it and want to know what it's about, I say as humanly little as possible. I recently told someone that Jojo Rabbit was "about a group of kids training to be Nazi soldiers during World War II." Anyone who has seen the movie knows that I left out a lot about what the film is really about. Now, did I turn away a lot of people from my plot outline compared to the actual one? Actually, maybe yes. But if I already have them hooked on my recommendation, I'm going to spoon-feed them so very little like that if I can. If I have to tell them more to get them to see it, then I guess I will.

But let's say you're not told and you're hit with a movie trailer on YouTube. Do you watch it if you know nothing about it and don't know if you want to spend your money on watching the movie? Watch as little as possible. Watch it until you're hooked. Don't let that trailer give away more than it needs so that you start connecting too many dots.

My favorite example of this is with the Liam Neeson movie Non-Stop. I'm going to embed a trailer on here, and I recommend that you watch until the 0:54 mark. If that isn't enough to hook you, then watch until 1:17. If that doesn't hook you, then don't watch the movie and feel free to watch the rest of the trailer. If you're hooked at either one of those points, stop the trailer then and don't see anything else until you see the movie. So that's the other way that I do it... I watch until I don't have to any longer.

              <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/jiHDJ19A3dk" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>

So what if you're in a movie theater and a trailer plays, and you're stuck? You have four options: 1) watch it; 2) leave the theater ("Hey guys, I gotta use the bathroom"); 3) close your eyes... at the very least, you're leaving out the visual tied with whatever is happening... and plug your ears singing LA LA meanwhile, but you may look silly (though I've done it); 4) watch it, but you're spoiling yourself because marketers can't help themselves.

Which brings me back to my final thing, and this is involving TV shows. I have no idea why shows insist on "Coming up" segments at the end of a bit. If you're tuned into the show, you're going to invest yourself in watching it already. They don't need to spoil something you already know you're about to see. Same thing with the end of an episode previewing the one for the next week. I always skip all of those. I'm already plugged into the show, why should I spoil myself with something I know that I want to see? It's just so weird. Lastly, channels like FX that show movies also do behind-the-scenes things during the commercial break, which are cool... but the problem is they'll do BTS stuff for things that haven't yet occurred in the movie at that time. I mean do it if you want, but do it for parts that have already happened, you know? It's just weird to me.

I love watching trailers right after I see a movie to see how much they reveal, and I'm most often dismayed that they "show way too much." However, you'll sometimes see me post impressions about a film and say: "You can totally watch the trailer and be okay," though that is few and far between. My favorite trailer was Paranormal Activity 3, where nothing in the trailer was actually in the film itself, but it still gave a good general vibe of what the film was going to be about.

Anyway, end rant. I should have made this a video rant. It would have been a lot faster haha.

Just went on a trip to Singapore, so round trip ended up with roughly 50 hours of time to kill on planes. My official ranking of the movies I watched are as follows:

                1. Uncut Gems - Legitimately good movie, fun to see Good Sandler again.
                2. Bad Boys - Had never watched these movies before but have always enjoyed Will Smith; pretty good action movie.
                3. Once Upon a Time...in Hollywood - Very well-made and very well-acted, but I didn't really like the movie in spite of that and can't see myself ever wanting to watch it again. Worth seeing once for the fun montages, the recreation of the 60s, and just for watching Leonardo and Pitt.
                4. Bad Boys 2 - Another solid action movie.
                5. The Irishman - Kind of similar feelings to Once Upon a Time, but just worse. Pesci and DeNiro are fun to watch as always, but "Young" DeNiro was so cringe-worthy to watch and the movie itself just isn't interesting enough to justify 3.5 hours.
                6. 6 Underground - Had a hard time staying awake at this point in the flight, but it's pretty much what you would expect out of a Michael Bay movie that has Ryen Reynolds in it.
                7. Men In Black: International - Can't imagine I'll ever want to watch it again, but Hemsworth and Thompson are enjoyable as usual. Not sure I really understood what happened in the movie though.

Did an absolute movie binge the last 2 days. Hooked up my new projector and just hooked a Sonos Play 5 to it.

I walked out, probably the worst movie I’ve seen in theaters in a very long time. Absolute embarrassment especially if you’re a fan of the first two.

The Good Liar. Very serviceable drama. McKellen not as good in this as he was in Sherlock, but worth the watch. Plays off Helen Mirren well. You think you see it coming, but you can't really see it coming.

                              • Bombshell: 5/10 [It felt like a high budget TV-movie. No subtlety, like explaining office politics and dynamics to 5 year olds. If Margot should have been nominated for something, it was Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood. Charlize was good in her Megyn Kelly impression.]
                              • The Hudsucker Proxy: 6/10 [Very fun Jennifer Jason Leigh performance. Such a treat to see a master like Newman at this stage of his career work on a project like this.]
