Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
Conan at times portrays himself as a ne'er do well but what he said about the destruction of the Tonight Show is spot on and NBC has done him a grave disservice. The guy has been very loyal to that company and what they done? listen to a blowhard egotist who not only forced David Letterman out but very nearly alienated one of their top stars out of the company.
Honestly NBC doesn't deserve a guy of Conan's integrity.Member of the Official OS Bills Backers Club

Yeah, NBC screwed this up hardcore. They should have either left Leno with the Tonight Show or stick with what they've done and get rid of Leno now....Conan at times portrays himself as a ne'er do well but what he said about the destruction of the Tonight Show is spot on and NBC has done him a grave disservice. Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
They need to take Leno out back and do him Ol' Yeller style already.... dude has been a hack for 15 years and wasn't even very funny as a stand-up comedian when he first got the show. Also, he's classless and a whiner for even mentioning taking "The Tonight Show" back after surrendering it on his own volition. What a chump that guy is, it's great seeing all the other late night hosts going after him finally.
And yeah, I hope Conan can find a way to screw them over... embarass the hell out of them for their horrendous mismanagement and disrespect and then jet off to another network and have a successful show. That's be the poetic ending to this whole fiasco.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
No offense but I dont find either of them that gut busting funny.
If a half an hour time slot is going to kill either program then neither should be there because they cant pull in the ratings anyway
Its the entertainment business though, and everyone is acting shocked. I work for the company that owns NBC (which is GE) and they make decisions to cover their behinds and money all of the time, mostly without thinking about the repercussions of the employees after the fact.
People picking sides on this one is silly. Both shows ratings suck no matter how you look at it and it was a matter of time before something was done.Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
Well their braindead rearranging of the schedule is what caused it. Leno's horrible-*** new show killed the local news ratings and then there were less people hanging around after that to watch Conan. The affiliates complaining about local news ratings is what started this whole thing, not Conan's ratings.
Plus people are just getting away from the regimentation required for the late night shows to be as successful as they once were. Leno appeals to nothing but old people basically (who go to bed around the same time every night, always watch the local news, etc.), and Conan appeals to a younger audience (most of whom probably DVR the show rather than watch at the normal time, or just watch online on Hulu, etc.) -- there was absolutely no way that Conan was going to match Leno's numbers within the first few years. For NBC to not realize that when they made the decision shows the level of incompetence present at the highest levels... and then for them to cave to Leno's bull**** request to come back and further dillute Conan's audience was just a slap in the face to Conan, who is a great talent, and basically doomed both shows to failure.
The whole reason they plugged Leno in there to begin with is because they have no freaking clue what to put on at 9:00. They blow their wad on Thursdays and then there's nothing quality the rest of the time. Putting *** **** Leno on in a variety show format for 30 minutes was the stupidest thing they could've done, basically... and now they're paying for it by essentially destroying "The Tonight Show", one of the last remaining vestiges of TV's glory days and one of the only things their network was known for.Send your Midnight Release weirdo pics/videos to my new website: http://www.peopleofmidnightreleases.com!Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
If he killed it like that it wouldn't have mattered. He was never going to get Leno's ratings because his style is different than Leno's. Leno's 10pm show was always going to be a failure and NBC knew this situation would have occurred if Leno failed.Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
Actually thats wrong. Conan wouldn't have been moved, fired or cancelled if Leno kept his promise and retired instead of leveraging NBC for a 10pm show. NBC is just afraid that Leno will run to ABC or Fox if they actually fire him. They are weighing the risks and they think its a bigger risk to let Conan go than let Jay go.No offense but I dont find either of them that gut busting funny.

No one should expect Conan to have Leno numbers during the first year of his show especially when Leno wasnt able to pull those numbers his first year. It takes time to build a talk show audience.
Conan cant lose in this situation. If he refuses to move to 12:05, he can either sit out and get paid 20 mil a yr for the next four or he can take a job at Fox and get a 30 min head start on Leno and Dave. People forget how well Arsenio did back in the day at that 11:00 spot.Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
I still don't get why everyone is bashing on Leno as if he is the one driving this. He busted his *** to cement 'The Tonight Show' as one of the great shows on TV, you really think HE wants to bastardize it?
NBC does, not Leno. And I totally agree with Conan that it's bull**** and he shouldn't accept their offer.
NBC forced Leno to retire, only for him not to want to... So they give him a new show to try and keep him. That shows does okay numbers, but not really good numbers. They end up having to axe it due to affiliate pressure, so they are trying to get Leno back where he murdered with numbers.
Where in there does Leno come out the bad guy? Just because he's Leno and everyone thinks he's an *******?Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
When Leno wanted to come back they should've told him he could move to Conan's old spot but again, this company makes money decisions first and foremost.
Conan doesn't feel any different than alot of other people in his business let alone the company he works for...they just dont say so.
That said I agree a variety show is some desperate attempt that spells failure and all of these scenarios should've been played out before they made the move but again, they dont care about hindsight or after the fact consequences. Its a wonder they do as well as they do.
I can understand Conan seeing this as being used like some kind of tool, but im not sure he was the right guy for that time slot.Comment

Leno busted his ***? If anybody busted their *** to create the legacy of The Tonight Show it was Johnny Carson.

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
Leno agreed to retire. He didnt have to. He agreed to retire, NBC announced the Conan transition and then he changed his mind and threatened to go to ABC. Thats why I blame him too. Also his show wasnt doing "okay" numbers. The show was losing to cable shows like Sons of Anarchy, Project Runway and South Park at 10pm. When your national show is losing to cable shows....you know you have a problem.I still don't get why everyone is bashing on Leno as if he is the one driving this.
