No one should expect Conan to have Leno numbers during the first year of his show especially when Leno wasnt able to pull those numbers his first year. It takes time to build a talk show audience.

Conan cant lose in this situation. If he refuses to move to 12:05, he can either sit out and get paid 20 mil a yr for the next four or he can take a job at Fox and get a 30 min head start on Leno and Dave. People forget how well Arsenio did back in the day at that 11:00 spot.

I do agree with this however Leno does not control NBC and thats where I see some focus misdirected.

NBC as it stands looks at Jay as more $$$ than Conan at the moment arent they?

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show

Conan won't be moving to 12:05...not sure what'll happen, but he's not happy.

Last Thursday, NBC executives told me they intended to move the Tonight Show to 12:05 to accommodate the Jay Leno Show at 11:35. For 60 years the Tonight Show has aired immediately following the late local news. I sincerely believe that delaying the Tonight Show into the next day to accommodate another comedy program will seriously damage what I consider to be the greatest franchise in the history of broadcasting. The Tonight Show at 12:05 simply isn't the Tonight Show. Also, if I accept this move I will be knocking the Late Night show, which I inherited from David Letterman and passed on to Jimmy Fallon, out of its long-held time slot. That would hurt the other NBC franchise that I love, and it would be unfair to Jimmy.

I still blame Leno more because this whole situation doesnt start if he doesnt renege on his retirement promise. Conan was happy at 12:30. They could have kept him there for another 4-5 yrs. They only moved him because Jay said he would retire.

I dont blame NBC for trying to keep both of them. They had no idea that Jay was going to change his mind about retirement and threaten to go to ABC. The 10pm show idea was a horrible idea but it was one of the few options they had to keep both of them.

Stupid Leno should just go play with his cars and call it a career. He's almost as much to blame for this fiasco as NBC if only because he apparently can't make up his mind if he wants to stay on the air or not.

This Bill Hicks bit always makes me smile:

They should've called his bluff then

Since when does one guy run your network? There is no way Jay is the main decision maker here, regardless of his threat.

I liked Leno, but if this is true I'm not gonna watch The Tonight Show anymore, the way NBC handled this was filled with ***hattery.

Thats bad business. You dont give a rival network the guy who had the best ratings in late night television. I thought Leno's show was crap but he has name recognition. You dont want to put Conan up against 2 guys who are already established at 11:30.

No one is saying that he is the main decision makers. What I'm saying is when he decided to unretire that forced NBC's hand to make a decision from a bunch of crappy choices.

Honestly, I think Conan will be a better fit on fox. And I can't wait to watch him there, seeing him do his more outrageous bits some more.

Any chance he goes to Comedy Central?

and NBC is screwing a lot more than Conan. I thought I heard almost his entire staff and crew made the move out to California.

This is noone's fault but NBC. NBC put Conan and Jay in horrible positions and did as soon as they announced Conan would take over before Jay wanted to retire. They've handled this just about as badly as they could, the only way it could've been worse was if NBC put a hit out on one of them.
As Shaquille O'Neal left the Suns practice court, he yelled out, "Alvin's the coach. We must be the Clippers. And I must be Olowokandi. Nooooo!"

It is the same way they lost Letterman, who has since lost to Leno in ratings for years. Not so much a screwup there.

Yes he signed a contract, but the contract allows them to move him to 12:05. So if he declines that, he will break the contract, not NBC, so he will not got paid.
