Sorry. NO matter what way you look at it, having a show canceled before it has ran its course is not the Midas touch. I like Conan and i enjoy him , but he's no TV god. I am on his side 100 percent on this BS that Leno did with him, but he's not going to go back to writing for the Simpsons. That BS is NOT going to happen. He's going to just take a break and when see what his options.

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
Don't think this has been posted yet, but Dick Ebersol had some choice words for Conan.
Originally posted by MSNBC.comLOS ANGELES - NBC Sports executive Dick Ebersol has defended Jay Leno against comedic barbs from Conan O’Brien and David Letterman in the wake of NBC’s request to move “The Tonight Show” to 12:05 a.m.
According to The New York Times, Ebersol called O’Brien and Letterman “chicken-hearted and gutless to blame a guy you couldn’t beat in the ratings.”
“They’re just striking out at Jay,” he added. “It seems like professional jealousy.”

NBC announced on Sunday that they planned to cut “The Jay Leno Show” down to 30 minutes and move it from 10 p.m. to 11:35 p.m., and they’ve asked to move “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien” to 12:05 a.m. However, O’Brien said earlier this week he will not accept the move.
Ebersol blamed the late night shift on O’Brien.
“What this is really all about is an astounding failure by Conan,” Ebersol added, referring to “The Tonight Show With Conan O’Brien’s” ratings, which have fallen since O’Brien took over the reigns.
Ebersol told the newspaper that he met with O’Brien several weeks before he was due to take over “The Tonight Show” seat last May, encouraging him to broaden his appeal. O’Brien’s people confirmed to the newspaper that the two had a meeting.
And according to the newspaper, Ebersol was not pleased that O’Brien didn’t take the advice to tweak his “Late Night” style to suit the earlier “The Tonight Show.”
“I like Conan enormously personally,” Ebersol told the newspaper. “He was just stubborn about not being willing to broaden the appeal of his show.”
Additionally, Ebersol said arguments by O’Brien’s people that seven months behind the “Tonight Show” desk wasn’t long enough for the funnyman to hit his “Tonight Show” stride, was “specious.”Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
First, I really think Conan got completely screwed here... this had absolutely nothing with Conan, IMO... he's still as funny as he was on Late Night. Those people that have Nielsen boxes obviously don't like him, but I doubt many college students have those boxes, or the other people that fit his demographic. Obviously Conan is pretty popular, or else the massive groundswell on the internet would not have happened. When I mentioned the Midas Touch, I was speaking about how funny he is. Not his interactions with NBC executives, and situations beyond his control, like a failed experiment with Leno at a timeslot where drama shows draw ratings. We all know why NBC put Leno there.Sorry. NO matter what way you look at it, having a show canceled before it has ran its course is not the Midas touch. I like Conan and i enjoy him , but he's no TV god. Second, the Simpsons stuff is just my speculation. Thanks for calling my hopes BS. I just want Conan to get back to his roots, make the Simpsons must-see TV again, and then get his own show, as a stopgap. Again, that was just what I want, and what would happen if I were supreme ruler of television (and we'd be in a world where Futurama and Arrested Development were never cancelled). I'm sure he's not going to just want to stop being relevant to America.
Finally, Ebersol's an idiot. You can't just throw Conan on the Tonight Show, and expect Nielsen ratings to be high within 7 months, especially since he's a different style than Leno (going from Leno's unfunniness to Conan's hilariousness).Rose City 'Til I Die

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
And not only that, but echoing the sentiment that has been stated all over the net, the irony of Ebersol calling Conan a failure is hysterical. Ebersol is the guy handling the Olympics for NBC and he has already lost them $200m on it.
And how can Ebersol say Conan didn't attempt to broaden to a different target audience? Late Night w/Conan and Tonight Show w/Conan were two completely different shows. It just goes to show how out of touch with the tv viewing audience NBC's big-wigs are.
BTW...I want "Late Night" Conan, not "Tonight Show" Conan.Member of The OS Baseball Rocket Scientists AssociationComment

Completely agree. Conan was funny on Tonight Show, but funnier on Late Night.

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
I find it hilarious that Ebersol says Conan didnt try to "broaden his appeal"... apparently he never watched Conan on Late Night, because the 2 shows are compeltely different
its even more ironic, because imo Conan changing his style was what actually led to the bad ratings... Conan tried to appeal to the Leno audience, at which he failed (which is understandable, Leno appeals to a different generation, they are different types of humor [aka funny and in Leno's case not funny])... in doing so he not only failed to capture Leno's audience, but he alienated his own fan base. I can't tell you how many Conan fans I've talked to that wish he would go back to his old style and quit trying to be someone he's not. By trying to make everyone happy he ended up making no one happy and we all stopped watching
and again, its not his fault, as its clear he was told what type of humor he should and shouldnt do...
I just find it ironic that the thing that caused his bad ratings are the same things the Execs are saying he didnt do, and wish he would haveComment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
Exactly. I assume what he meant was "Conan didn't completely adopt Leno's sense of humor."...Conan's remote segments were still Late Night quality, but there was a definite difference between his Late Night monologue and first sketch and the Tonight Show's.Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
either way, as fans of the real Conan (not that pc crap he's been forced to do), this is the best news I could ask for
I wasnt watching him on the Tonight show anyway, so I'll gladly wait 6 months-1 year until he gets his own show on Fox... when that time comes you know there will be no restrictions and the old Conan will be back in full swingComment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
I have seen both Conan's so to speak (Late night vs. Tonight show) and I think they are both hilarious. I really like what he has been doing on the Tonight in fact, especially in the last few months.Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
Agreed. Conan is great, even when he tones down the risque humor. Can't wait to see him on FOX in 6 months... he better bring back all of the Late Night humor, including the masturbating bear. Maybe the demon puppy as well.Rose City 'Til I Die

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
FYI: Awesome podcast discussing this whole ordeal on Bill Simmons podcast. Can't remember the guys name, but he's the TV critic for the San Fran Chronicle.“Nobody in the history of the game tried what I just tried. We’re talking about on the biggest stage, in New York, playing out of position and asked to hit fourth for the New York Yankees. I mean, that’s never been done.” - Sheffield on SheffieldComment

Conan's characters (like the Masturbating Bear) are NBC's intellectual property, and as a result he can't use them when he goes to another network.
Let us all fondly remember that bear who just couldn't stop pleasuring himself. He will be missed.
