Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
Conan O'Brien is losing "The Tonight Show" but he'll be getting a $32.5 million consolation prize courtesy of NBC ... sources tell TMZ.
In return, we've learned Conan has agreed to sit on the bench until September. Translation -- he can't host another show until the fall.
In addition to the $32.5 mil, we've learned NBC is also paying severance to Conan's "Tonight Show" employees. In all, we're told NBC's payout is around $40 million.
But Conan probably won't see close to the $32.5 mil. Under the deal, any money Conan makes during the remaining contract period with NBC will offset the network's obligation. So, if Fox were to make a deal with Conan and pay him $25 mil during the NBC contract period, Conan would only score $7.5 mil from NBC.
One well-placed NBC source told us something surprising -- looks like NBC may keep its intellectual property rights. So Conan can't take his creations -- such as Triumph the Insult Comic Dog andthe Masturbating Bear -- to his next gig.
We're told the Conan/NBC deal still isn't completely done, but it's very close.

Nothing about him not being allowed to zing NBC in the future.
Fox, please sign Conan for about $100,000/year until the NBC contract expires and then give him about $20,000,000/year.

I don't see why Conan would make Fox pay him $25 million and not just work for minimum wage and collect the money from NBC.Comment

haha... I that would be some great leverage for Conan to get back some of his characters back from NBC. I would love to see Zucker's face when Fox tells NBC they're paying Conan him minimum wage.Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
I still don't get why people want him to get the rights to his old characters. I mean, I get that we feel it's right that he get the rights to characters he made famous; but am I the only one that trusts that he can just create new stuff?
Much of his Late Night stuff didn't make the jump to The Tonight Show, so it was obvious he was going for newer stuff anyway.
Don't get me wrong, if Conan can get the rights to his old stuff, to bring back periodically, then by all means he should; I just don't get the outcry for it around the internet. Many of the characters were good in their time, but aren't useful anymore.
I mean, I liked Cactus Chef playing "We Didn't Start the Fire" on the flute, but if we never see him again, it's not a big deal. Ditto for the Masturbating Bear, Triumph (who actually would be missed), or Pimpbot 5000 (seriously, has he even been used since 2003?)Comment

He retired the characters so I wouldn't mind at all if they never came back. I don't think NBC owns triumph, he just made guest appearencesComment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
NBC is just being a dick with this out of spite. They attempted to keep Letterman from using his top ten list for the same reason.
Creative people will be able to make newer and better things. Regardless of if NBC even has claim to Triumph, Robert Smigel is the force behind the character anyways.Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
Am I the only one who had the NBC logo in the bottom left corner of the the screen disappear halfway through Conan's monologue never to be seen again?
I found that odd. Might just be my affiliate though.
He just came back from commercial and it's still not there. Almost like NBC is distancing themselves from this.Member: OS Uni Snob Association | Twitter: @MyNameIsJesseG | #WT4M | #WatchTheWorldBurn

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
Triumph is the only character that I would really miss. Would this also include segments like "in the year 2000/3000"?
If so though, he could just rename the segment and still do it though.Comment

Re: Conan's Reign Begins - The Tonight Show
If the Conan buyout is $30 million, I'd assume that it would be distributed to most of his staff as well. I think I remember hearing there were 150 full-time staff members, so that'd be $200,000 each if they all wish to relocate back to New York or whereever.Comment

I read Conan is getting 32.5 million and the staff is getting 8 mil.Comment

I think the best parts of his monologues this week have been where he references the fan movement, and his incredulousness at the fact that he's been reduced to Coco. Especially last night, when Andy pointed out it'd be cheaper on his tombstone to have Coco than Conan. Had me rolling.Rose City 'Til I Die
