    Re: Official Android Discussion Thread

Just got an Atrix today, phone is pretty sweet. I haven't gotten completely comfortable with the OS on it yet (first smart phone) but I'm getting there, starting my free app hoarding tomorrow lol.

I was really wanting to get the Bionic, but since it won't be released before Verizon switches to the new tiered data plan next week on new contracts I refuse to renew with them again (absolutely ridiculous that what I pay for unlimited data right now will soon be the lowest tiered plan). I'm thinking the Motorolla photon on Sprint will be my next phone, the specs look really nice. It might depend on how long it is until it is out though.

Interesting times coming up for Android...

News that Google had competition for a bundle of patents being sold by bankrupt Nortel Networks surfaced a week ago and now it's official; a consortium of companies including Apple, EMC, Ericsson, Microsoft, RIM and Sony won the multi-day auction with a bid of $4.5 billion.
Google wanted these to use as leverage in the numerous patent lawsuits against Android. Microsoft already made something like $5 from every android phone HTC sold with a patent settlement, and more companies are vulnerable to similar shakedowns.

The appeal of Android to OEMs is that it's open and "free". However it may soon be more appealing and cheaper to just license Windows Mobile from MS and not have to worry about the patent problems.

Doesn't sound like you've been following close enough. You will be grandfathered. Which means that you will get to keep your unlimited data even if you upgrade to 4G. If you are a current verizon customer with unlimited data plan for smart phones. So you may want to check into that. All the relevant links are a couple of pages back.

I guess I missed that. Looks like I can still be grandfathered in until some as of yet determined date. If I can still be grandfathered in I'll probably get the Bionic then. Of course it would be nice having 1gb of ram on the proton.

Guys, my wife bought the Blackberry Torch last week and she thinks its ok but could be better. We were also looking at the Samsung Captivate, is that a decent Android phone? I don't know anything about Android since I'm an iphone user.

Looks like the Bionic might have passed through the FCC. Late July/early August looks like a safe bet which is good news for me since my upgrade date is the 20th.

A mystery Motorola phone sporting both LTE and CDMA radios cruised through the FCC today, leading us to believe that it’s revision 3 of the DROID Bionic. There are no other LTE Motorola devices on the horizon that we know of (unless it’s a new XOOM), so it’s got to be it, right? As you... #Bionic

Captivate is a good phone for AT&T. I don't have any problems with it, but I'm also not running the AT&T rom.

Thanks Dre and rush, we went today and swapped out the BB for the Captivate. She seems so far to like it much better, now I need to find some kind of protective case for it. My wife isn't the greatest with taking care of cell phones. LOL! Any suggestions on where to get a case? BBY was kind of a ripoff and we didn't like what they were offering.

Anyone have a good program like Lookout? My premium trial ends soon.

Would be good if there's one with a remote wipe capability incase I lose this phone or it gets jacked.

I recently bought a motorola atrix. Its a android I believe I wasn't really paying attention when I bought it. How do you put certain ringtones for different people for texting....not calling.
