Vivid pretty much maxes out all settings on the picture and uses the Cool temperature (but in terms of luminescence, blue's temperature is actually hotter than red's). In a retail store this can really pop out, but at home it just looks artificial, is rather blinding in my opinion, and will destroy the life of your TV over the long run.

Three or so months of owning a TV sounds a little off, though. As we speak, my living room Samsung plasma screen that I got in July 2012 has 9,434 hours on it (which equates to over 13 consecutive months without turning it off) and has been calibrated for all but the first 150 hours I owned it (and at that time, it was on Movie mode). Despite the picture setting differences, this just seems really strange that your set died.
I owned it for years, but only changed it to vivid a few months ago.

I mainly liked vivid because it was brighter.

I changed my other TV to vivid not too long after I changed the one that broke, so I guess I should change settings back before it's too late.

What settings exactly would be best? I looked at the numbers on vivid for my other TV and many numbers seem to be around 50-65, and contrast is over 90(which is the main thing that brightens up the screen). Though I liked how bright it is with that high contrast, so hopefully I don't need to change it much.

Everything is up to the user. I like measured accuracy, so with that my films that I watch appear as intended.

Some things I would look to turn off though are any post-processing effects, like dynamic contrast, edge-enhancement, noise filters, frame interpolation, etc. Most sets also should have sharpness set right at 0 or right at the middle, depending on how the set intends to do things (sharpness set at the middle for some sets is proper because lowering it literally does an artificial softening of the image).

I don't really have any idea what those effects do, but I usually have them ON. Guess I should just take them all off? And sharpness, I also don't notice any difference, but I had it at 10(which is the max). So change that to 5?

I just try and get the picture as intended, for better or worse. Filters may do things like crush blacks, blur frames, or scrub film grain. I remember when I made a 2.40:1 AR Blu-ray for The Dark Knight Rises, I almost cried at how poor the picture was before I realized that I had also changed picture presets and did not address the filters. Once I turned them off, it was beautiful again.

Ironically, your sharpness may also be up to counteract those processing effects. It's like getting an umbrella for the rain as opposed to just not going outside altogether. So maybe sharpness is even supposed to go to zero. It depends on how your set works for it. Which TV do you have again?

My good(now broken) TV is LG(LED). Cheaper secondary one is Philips(LCD).

I cracked and bought a TCL P series today. I bought my last TV because I thought it had HDR (a 2015 LG bought last year), but it didn't have HDR10, it had some proprietary form of HDR? I was bouncing between the TCL and a Sony X900E (even considered a C7 at one point), but decided that the difference in picture quality (To me) wasn't worth the extra $600 jump. Thing is a beauty, and the input lag is impeccable, my last set had horrible input lag (well it seemed horrible, rtings had it at 80ms?), I was getting a lot more kills in Destiny 2 Crucible today. Picture quality is great, I tried using the Rtings settings but the image looked washed out, changed it to a normal default setting with game mode on and it's looking good!

I was hesitant because TCL isn't a brand I am hugely on board with, but this one is great, and all the features it does pack is incredible at the price point it's at. I can't wait to play with it some more.

(On an aside, the major thing I dislike is the lack of an ability to control my sound bar with my TV remote, the LG Magic Remote is a wonderful piece of technology).

Outside of black Friday till end of year, I guess there's no other real good time for tv deals from now till then? Originally thought I'd get my tv fixed, but company is acting stupid and delaying things by a month. It's a very fixable problem, they just can't get the part. TV is too good to throw away cause 90% of it works, it's just a fried powerboard.

I somehow got my tv remote to control sound bar volume using Arc. I hooked up ARC hdmi from tv to soundbar...also still have optical going out cause I wasn't getting sound. Either way, it now has sound through soundbar and control with tv remote lol. So I'd look into that. I think my soundbar was a bit weird and it should be easier, but not sure.

I think so, I have always bought Sony brand TVs. They are good quality.

Is the TCL 55" P series the TV most are agreeing on these days? With the Xbox One X coming out, I need to make a decision soon. I'm not going to buy an OLED or a top end Samsung but am willing to spend in the $1000-$1500 range. I really liked the KS8000 last year but couldn't pull the trigger, how does it compare to that?
