I know, every television is different though. Like I said, we have a plasma screen downstairs, so it's not like this technology is brand new to me. Nevermind the fact that we have lighter bars on the sides of our screen, due to us having black bars on there for 4:3 content for quite some time (before we realized what was happening and switched to gray), but I've watched movies down there enough, and played games as well, to notice there isn't really anything being affected by the screen (plus the amount of times we leave things on pause).

I'm just a skeptic for a brand new thing I actually bought. I shouldn't be this nervous about it, and I told myself I wouldn't be. I'm just hoping nothing happens is all.

My bigger concerns are the buzzing noise and the brightness pops. Address those, and I will be less stressed about the negatives of my set.

Go all HDMI, if possible. Way less clutter. Its very easy to get a spiderweb of wires back there. 1 HDMI from TV to receiver, then 1 HDMI from each device into the receiver.

      Nice and tidy.

And as long as you manually lower the contrast (somewhere in the 50-55 range) on whatever presets you use, you'll be fine. It'll be noticeably darker but your eyes will adjust. A little IR is to be expected on a new plasma.

Normal viewing gets rid of almost all temporary IR, but you also have the pixel orbiter, color wash, and white wash if needed.

You just mean during that first break-in period, right? I don't expect to have my contrast that low for all eternity. I changed mine to what 55 is using on his setup (contrast at 95, plus other things). I've surpassed 120 hours at this point with contrast and brightness at 50 (and cell light at 10) when it comes to break-in slides, so can I... like... upgrade to normal video settings at this point? Haha.

And I never understood that thing about 50 contrast for break-in. If we're running slides to even out the phosphors on the color scale anyway, what difference does it make what setting they're at? Know what I mean? In fact, wouldn't raising it just help the break-in period move a long a little bit more quickly? Or can't you just at least progress into a higher contrast during this period?

The mid-range contrast suggestion is really for content watching when not using or breaking-in your set. I'm not a plasma expert but I've seen people on other AV Forums break-in their plasma's using OTB Settings without any changes. Then when done, calibrate & done

I'm sure that's the way to do so that the prosphers age evenly during the break-in process

No no, I understand that. I just wasn't sure if you were suggesting him to lower it even after he was done "breaking in" his television.

For the record, I'm still running slides overnight myself. Last night I watched Forgetting Sarah Marshall, and let the slim black bars (for 1.85:1 content) stay on the screen. Then I ran slides for about 20 minutes while getting dessert, and played two games of NBA Jam, a hint of Uncharted 2, and Killzone 3 in 3D, which was really fun, but nobody else was really online for some reason. I'll try again later today.

Anyway, I've been running slides since then, but when I was watching my movie or playing my games, I did it with 95 contrast and everything else I have up to my "calibration" standards.

I think I should really be up to as good as I can be at this point, but I still wonder if I will start getting IR at the same time. If my plasma downstairs is any indication, I should actually be slightly worried about it.

So does anyone know what the hell erupted at AVS over the last two years or so? I see that "highdefjunkies.com" is now a banned word, and that referencing it is nigh verboten. I've gone to HDJunkies and they have some great info for my VT30, but damn, I must have missed the huge riff that occurred.

              Odd...

Yeah they began a few years ago banning other site names and mention of prices from retailers.

No, I was referring to the break in period. After that you can raise the contrast to your liking. My LG plasma is now at 70.

Finished the break-in and watched Nightmare Before Christmas tonight...what an awesome picture!

Though I'm paranoid to death of image retention/burn-in. I don't even want to watch the football game out of fear, let alone watch a 2.35:1 movie or play some games. Do I need to baby it with full screen content for a few more hundred hours or should I just watch and play what I want and and run the screen wipe/scrolling bar after every session?

For the record, I'm almost over the "babying" crap about 48 hours later, thinking that if it becomes too scarily defective with IR or burn-in, that I would exchange it and note the other defects (the weird dark, insignificant streak of picture across the screen as well as the buzzing).

So far, I've played several hours of NBA Jam, about an hour of Uncharted 2, and about two hours total of MW2 and KillZone 3. Likewise, I just watched National Treasure earlier today (looked beautiful, BTW), and am now running sets of slides just to be sure. Thankfully, still nothing to be seen in the image.

By the way, I think you'll be okay with 2.35:1 content if you do what I do. I've constructed slides that are black where the regular image should be, and the different colored slides where the black bars (in a 2.35:1 movie) should be. This helps "balance" everything out. For every hour of movie I watch, I'll run a half hour of slides. Then I'll run another half hour of the normal slides, just to even the things out for the next couple hundred hours.

Yeah, I'm still babying it to be sure... but at least I still get to watch my movies. I'm enjoying this set immensely! I'm hoping to get over the buzzing though. It was a non-issue with National Treasure when I blasted the movie and sat on the corner of my bed (never heard a peep), but if I'm front and center with quiet moments of a film, it will be slightly obtrusive.

first time using the woodstove this weekend because of the 20 inches of snow.
Anyways- i put a thermometer above the mantle and it got up to 94 degrees.

Is that too hot to put my plasma up there??
I do have the 4 years warranty which covers any problems, but Im just wondering if its worth the trouble of dropping an outlet from my second floor down to that wall- then running all the lines behind the wall.

Is this tv gonna work properly at that temp?
I actually though it was going to be a higher temp than that seeing how the woodstove was at 1100.

Honestly guys... I ran through the break in slides for 150 hours or so and have never seen the slightest hint of IR (let alone burn-in). The thing that put me over the top happened a year ago. I paused Call of Duty and went to let the dog out...ran into my neighbor and BS'd with him for 30-45 minutes. I completely forgot I had paused the game. Came back in and thought "Oh no...this can't be good". Un-paused the game and didn't see any IR...switched inputs to a black input, still didn't see any IR.

IMO, with pixel shift and newer technology, IR is close to being a thing of the past.

The tv already gets hot on it's own. Adding more heat is probably not a good idea

So far, I haven't seen any hints of it while gaming... but while running the slides I was talking about after watching my letterbox movies, I swear I see a slight color differentiation near the corners of the letterbox area. Maybe I'm just looking for something that isn't really there, but what's funny is that I think I see it in the opposite way. In other words, the area that would normally have the black bars is actually darker than the regular image area. Maybe I'm running those inverse slides a bit too much.

IR is really based on the TV that you have, though. There is no myth about doing the first 100 hours with slides helping out your TV in the long run, anyway. The colors in fact do change, and it's better to work on calibration afterward when they're all broken in. It also ages the phosphors, which in effect do help prevent IR (much like a pitcher warming up his arm in the bullpen coming into a game: it improves performance and helps prevent injury, despite the fact that he could be injury-free without warming up or could still get injured after having warmed up). Anyhow, as I was saying, IR varies from television set to television set, even if you have the same exact model. Some people have noted IR, which means it's not a fool-proof "thing of the past."
