Haha thanks man. I sat myself about 6' away from the 59" screen when I was at both Video Only and Best Buy, just to tell myself that I will be 2' further when it's finally in there. I basically said, if I can handle this, I can handle that, and so on.

Besides, we have a 50" screen at home. I know 9" is substantially, substantially larger, but it's not like it will be the first time I've seen a panel this big before. I know what I'm getting myself into.

And of course, the room is always larger than the pictures will make it lol. Those pictures make it look like a closet. I'm not saying it's much bigger than you see, but the pictures aren't helping.

OK...so for us it's going to come down to the 65" Panny VT30 or the 64" Sammy D7000. I can't stand the silver bezel of the D8000, which is why that's not included. I'm also curious if the Sharp LED Quattron displays are worth it, as we can fit even the 70" monster. I just wonder if the black level performance is up to snuff on those displays (as well as color and motion blur issues).

I'll be honest, the main reason I was hesitant on the 55" VT30 (when it came down to the actual decision to go with the 59" D7000) was Panasonic's history of rising blacks. They've been working on it since 2009 and it's been improving, but this TV purchase will definitely be long-term, and I can't have any regrets.

VT30 is a fantastic set, but the color accuracy of the Samsung is unmatched right now

It comes down to these 2 and I say go for the Samsung

Okay, so I officially purchased the Samsung PN-59D7000 at Fry's for $1799 (tax-free and includes delivery). I'll be getting it tomorrow, but my stand still isn't coming until next week, so for now I'll just have it on the carpet, running break-in slides and working on at-home calibration settings.

I have a question about the break-in slides, though. I remember when I ran some off a flash drive for a Samsung plasma at school, I couldn't change the video settings at all. In other words, it was running with Dynamic settings (maximum contrast and cell light, etc.). How do you guys get around this so that you can get that 50/50 on contrast and brightness, or what have you?

I assume one way would be to run it using a DVD, but I don't want to for two reasons: 1) I don't want to wear my PS3 drive looping a disc for a constant amount of time; 2) I don't want to order the DVD when I can get the slides for free on a thumb drive.

I'm seeking another PS3-based alternative, though. Can I stick the thumb drive into the PS3 and read it off of there under "Photos"? If so, maybe I could loop it that way. The final thing I thought of, which would definitely work, is running a "slideshow" off the PS3 with all of the images stored onto the HDD. That last solution sounds the best, but is there a recommended amount of time to run each color? I heard 30 seconds, which means I'll have to store three repeated colors at a time for it.

During the typing process, it sounds like I just answered my own question.

You can change the picture setting from Dynamic to Movie or Standard or Relax or Cal day and Cal night if you unlock those 2 from the service menue

Download the slides to a usb and put the usb on the side of the tv which has usb inputs

go to pictures on the samsung and run it from there on very slow

I run them for a few hours a week to remove IR

On very slow I think each slide runs for about 10 seconds


You do not need a dvd or the ps3

Sounds great! I'm considering running a PS3 slideshow anyway though, just so I can use the "Fade" option to transition between slides, even if for half a second's time.

I got the TV. Currently I'm just listening to music with the PS3 visual player #2 running on the screen.

TV looks great! I see some fluctuating brightness while the colors change from time to time. It shouldn't be too bad if there's a lot of action or something, but it's more than noticeable. I hope Samsung is working on a firmware update to fix that.

And I don't know if my eyes deceive me, but about 2/3 up the TV, I feel like I see an inch tall horizontal fade of picture that is faintly, faintly, faintly dark er than the rest of the screen. Of course, I'm only scrutinizing that. I doubt I'll ever notice it if I don't look for it, but I still can't tell if that's really there, or if I'm just imagining it.

Anyway, great purchase! Once the stand comes and I build it, I'll be in movie watching heaven!

EDIT: Well, my eyes do not deceive me. There is definitely something 2/3 up the screen. I don't know whether I should say I'm being picky about this or not, but I can see it with a solid-colored background across the screen. Maybe I'm the only one, but that's all it takes. I just don't know if it's worth taking back for another one or something. Do I sound like this is more of an issue than it really is?

SECOND EDIT: Nevermind, I just tried Transformers: DOTM, and the little "tear" across the screen is nonexistent. I even tried looking for it like under a microscope. All is good on that front for me, then!

Sucks that they do that for you and not let the user decide how much energy then want to burn since we pay the electric bill

But there are rumors that samsung will throw a fw to shut it off and be the same at all times.

But samsung never actually stated this so we shall see

I've checked, double-checked, and triple-checked. It's the only area where it has that little band of "darkness." If JTS saw my post, he'd confirm that I would be the only person in the world to even catch onto it, let alone see it when somebody points it out to you. It's literally that negligible of an image fault. Because it doesn't show up while I'm actually watching a movie, I'm okay with it. However, I should clarify that I first caught a glimpse of it while listening to my music with the visual player.

I know it's not an actual bug, but like you said, they can meet the same energy savings level by having it on as a default measure. An option to turn it off can even be hidden within the service menu, for all that I care. The option would certainly be nice is all. We already have those stupid Eco and Power Save options. No need to force us more things to hinder our actual viewing experiences.

Panasonic applied a patch which remedied this cause, so I really do hope what you say is true, and that the D7000 line gets it as well, not just the D8000.

By the way, are these TV's capable of handling the full RGB 0-255 color range? Or is that kind of talk strictly for PC monitors and VGA cables only?

It can, but it will decode that signal into YCbCr. You really have no choice for gaming since you use a PS3. For BR you do have a choice & I would suggest setting it to YCbCr with Super White set to ON
