Don't rule out the Samsung plasma line. The C8000 I have is one hell of a TV at less price than the comparable Panasonic VT25. Most reviews I saw give a slight edge to the VT25, but I spoke with Chad B (ISF Calibrator from Ohio) and he said the latest firmware on the Samsung (1032) put it above the VT25 in his book and all of the reviews were pre-1032 firmware.

I have read on AVS a handful of people having issues with the 8000 series as well as the VT25 (although for obvious reasons I rarely go into the VT25 threads anymore), but I have yet to experience any of these "issues". I think people often focus on the negative because they don't have any reason to complain about the positive. Personally, I'm glad I didn't let AVS swing me in the VT25 direction. While I'm sure it's a great TV, it's not worth $800+ more in my book.

Also, check out ABT Electronics or Cleveland Plasma. I purchased through Cleveland Plasma, but when the TV came, it said ABT Electronics on it so I assume Cleveland Plasma is a middleman.

I got back from Best Buy earlier returning the Samsung C600 LCD, decided to go with the Panasonic G20 plasma. I was going to go with the 55" Sammy LCD, but since they were all out I saw the G20 open box and said I'll give it a shot (they didn't have anymore new ones in stock in the area). I have 45 days from today if there is anything wrong with it.

So far, no worries with the lighting in the room and adjacent kitchen as we have the lights on in both rooms. Tomorrow will be the real test once the blinds are opened up.

So far I've watched 1 movie and some sports, WOW! does the image look





better than the LCD I had.......more natural. Blacks and colors overall look

Sweet, I have had my plasma for a year one and still love it, I'm still going crazy though with the settings, lately I have been leaving it in THX mode for viewing cable and movies, I was using game mode for my gaming with my settings that look beautiful, he only thing is I have been reading about the THX mode my set has, and it has been saying if your set had this mode use it for everything y watch and play, because its like already having ur set calibrated. So I'm giving that a go right now, now my gaming looks dull, maybe because I'm not used to it, but what I had my aging set at already was beautiful.

I've become so brand loyal to Samsung that even days later, I feel like I am cheating by getting the Panny. It's so weird that it bugs me going with the Panny, but I love this set so far.

I do not blame you on the money deal, I don't think its worth spending an extra $800 either. AVS can make your head explode with all the complaining over there. Guys are so nit picky, it's not even funny. They will complain about the smallest things over there and you have to wonder if their being realistic sometimes.

ABT electronics is up north from where I live. I've never bought anything from them, but have heard excellent things about their service.

My only issue is, when In THX mode gaming looks funny, just started using THX when gaming. When I put The PS3 in game mode and edit the settings myself it looks better, but I could just be excited that it looks so vibrant and colorful, but at the same THX Mode should look the best, I mean on my set I cant edit the THX mode like other sets, but THX mode is suppose to be already fully professionally calibrated mode.

I say do what you want to do and what looks best to YOU. I don't get caught up in calibration settings and what other people say on websites. Calibration settings are like sliders........before you know it you will become paranoid and start tweaking with crap every damn day instead of enjoying it.

I changed my settings on my tv only TWICE and that was it. It looks fine to me and my wife, so that is all that matters.

Don't get caught up in THX mode for gaming. Games are supposed to be vibrant. Just make sure that your greens look green and you're not experiencing too much black crush. Things shot on film have different expectancies, though.

Oh, and I'm Samsung loyal too.

Agreed. About the calibrating and settings.

I would use THX for movies and TV, and Game Mode tweaked for gaming!

Now CES get here so I can decide to wait for 2011 models or just jump into discounted G25/GT25/VT25s.

Black crush?

Black crush is where, say, you have a shadow or someone with black clothing or hair, and you experience very little gradient detail in those parts of the shot. Instead of having some actual picture in there to look at, it just becomes a seeping blob of black. I don't know exactly what spectrum range that would be referring to, but this would happen with too much contrast or too little brightness, etc.

I'll find an example for you.

EDIT: Well I don't know if this is a perfect example because I don't want you to think it's just a matter of lowering brightness (though it mainly is), but here is one using King Kong. Notice the detail in this shot, especially in the rocks and Kong's hair:

Now as we start crushing blacks we are losing details in the dark areas:

Here's where we take it to the extreme, really blowing out the black detail:

Sacrificing black crush for some vivacity is not that much of an issue with playing games unless your games have a lot of dark scenes (but you can normally raise the gamma in the game's settings if you have to anyway), so I would say you can go for what you want to. And chances are your TV has deep enough blacks that you will have good gradients to perceive the details in dark images instead of having them all bleed like they would on my LCD.

Really, I've been using THX mode since I bought the TV has. I adjusted the settings a bit on THX, but have no complaints so far. I'm not sure if THX mode is handled differently on the Panny vs. LG, etc. I'm not one to like an overall vibrant looking picture. I did the same thing with the LCD I had, where I used Move mode with calibrated settings to give my movies and television more of the natural, film like look.

It just comes down to what you and your family like.

I agree. The settings found on AVS and anywhere else should mainly be used as a basis. No two viewing environments are going to be the same.

As much as I love Samsung, it would take something drastic to happen to this set in the next 45 days to make me switch. I really like the aesthetics of the Sammy's, their GUI interface is always simple and top notch to use compared to the competition, and their build quality has been pretty good for the various TV sets of theirs that I own and have owned. Others would disagree with me as you hear too many Samsung build complaints, but who knows. Only thing I wish they would figure out with their LCD's in 2011 is to please stop that stupid panel lottery which got of control with all their 2010 models.

thanks for that info, Yeah I can't seem to game in THX mode, for some odd reason it just doesn't look right, I have my games in game mode and tweaks and my games look great. I will just leave the cable and for THX mode, even then when watching sports THX looks dull to what I used to have. Maybe I just have to used to it, it's suppose to be a perfect settings or at least close to it.

Well I'm making the jump in February. I'm leaning towards plasma. We'll see. Seems as though if I use common sense I should be good as far as burn in.

LOL, Listen the burn in thing is not an issue any more, really, I have had my set for over year and was a wreck for the first month, now I don't even pay attention to it, of course I wont leave static image on the screen fopr a long time still, but I do see some IR still, but it's gone in seconds. That's all I have ever saw was IR and thats a whole lot of normal.

Can you explain to me what "image retention" is?

I would look it up, but I have a feeling you guys would give me a less scary example, that will not make me all paranoid like AVS forums can.

I am definitely going with a Plasma.

I have a 42" and 50" Plasma and I have had no problems with burn-in. I have had the 42" for over 3 years and so far so good.

The picture is a thing of beauty.
