No extra work here. After the break-in, high contrast (65) and watch whatever I want. If I had a gaming system, I'd do that too with no hesitation.

65 is high contrast on a plasma? On my DLP, I had contrast at 95. (And yes I used a calibration DVD to adjust my settings).

I'm going off 55's calibration settings, which are also 95 contrast.

I've only seen very few cal. settings that had like, say, 78 contrast. That might have been for the 64D8000 Samsung models, which could potentially have better/different black levels and contrast ratios than the 59D7000 Samsungs, and were meant for those pitch black rooms. Anything above 95 is overkill, though.

And Giants4Natic, I think the biggest thing is that I still don't truly, truly understand what IR exactly is, at least on a scale of understanding the technology itself. For instance, what is it that makes IR go away and not burn-in?

From what I've heard (though don't necessarily understand or agree with), burn-in is a literal term for plasma screens... something will actually etch into the screen, and remain there for all eternity. However, I use the term slightly more loosely. What we have on our downstairs TV (lighter sides from 4:3 black bars in the past) is what I call burn-in, or "resilient IR," if that term fits more appropriately. Maybe if I ran some inverse slides that had black in the middle, I could get rid of what I see on there.

Nevertheless, that happens because of uneven wear on our television over time. IR doesn't make me nervous, uneven wear does. No matter what I do to make my IR "go away," what I want to know is whether those portions of the screen are still getting that uneven wear over time, and eventually will find their way to "burn in" onto the screen only because of that uneven wear. Does that make sense with what I'm saying?

For instance, let's use the 4:3 example again. Let's say I watch an hour of 4:3 black bar content, then run slides for five hours. Rinse and repeat for a year. Although we are helping out the IR issue every time we watch TV, does that completely negate the fact that the phosphors in the middle of the screen have aged much more than the ones on the sides (similar to watching 4:3 content for 500 hours straight, then running slides for 2500 hours)?

Unless you have a gaming system, you can't share what these other guys are going through. They're seeing IR and it's going away "after some time."

Considering we're here on OS - I'd expect people to offer their thoughts on a TV that they also game on. I'm shocked you're not of the same group.

Not interested in what is slowly becoming an LED/LCD vs. Plasma discussion. Every time I bring up IR the response is "go LED/LCD and deal with those problems." It's the exact reason I haven't posted in this thread (and I really KNEW better) and why I don't post on AVS.

If you're happy with white washing a TV every night to get that awesome picture you enjoy, that's all that matters. But from the last few posts alone it does seem like there is a group that doesn't want to deal with that, myself included. I guess they'll just have to deal with the terrible LED TV's that are available.

All that matters is getting a TV set you're happy with. That's it. For the record, I recently saw the top of the line sets out there all calibrated and showing reference quality media... and the images aren't all that different (aside from LG - It's incredible how terrible they were). Big thanks to Joe for connecting me with a place here in NY.

And the Elite is just incredible. Not worth the money but such an amazing set.

I did want to clarify that switching to 16:9 for MW3 was a good move, although I still do HUD-shifting before every match. Again, the IR is disconcerning for me; I will never, ever notice it during any normal viewing, period (especially since it goes away). What I'm concerned about is whether IR is really, truly just a temporary thing, or if over time, much like my Panny downstairs, I'll start to see some uneven phosphor wear on my screen, where the radar map is on the top left, my weapon ammo is displayed on the right, etc.

If that's the case, then it's not simply okay to just "run slides" or "white wash your screen" if these issues can still arise over a long period of time. I'll go back to my movie example again... will running slides after watching a 2.35 : 1 movie completely negate any residing issues if I can't see them after the IR itself is gone, or is it still causing uneven wear that can eventually "burn in" over time, much like my television downstairs?

So is it better to try to find a deal during Black Friday or wait for after the new year after the 2012 products are unveiled?

I'm thinking of going with a 46" of either the Sony HX820 or HX929 if I can find a really good deal on it at some point.

I spoke with many reps on this aspect. Most all of them said that you will see zero reduction in price on the top flight television sets, and the best you'll get are certain bundled packs (Blu-ray players, 3D glasses, the works). If there is a price reduction, you can always price-match... but that would require the item(s) to still be in stock by the time you make it into the store, unless you can do it over the phone.

I have a 3d 42 inch Panasonic for PS3 and XBOX 360 only. I had an office but I was kicked out of it this summer so my wife could open a daycare.

We are finishing my basement as we speak and I should be up and running with a game room and a man cave soon.

My question is... Are there any problems with Plasma displays if they go long periods without being used? Sadly it's been 2-3 months since I've turned it on.

Left IR for a day or two, but other than that it hasn't been an issue and I don't go looking for it anymore.

Stay away from LG, their quality has gone done quite a bit.

Also white washing (scrolling bar on my set) is not good to do every night. I would think that Giants would know better on that. Everywhere I have read since last year when I was looking at plasama's people say to only use scrolling bar if you really have to and once every so often. It does damage to the phosphorus to be running all the time.

Not sure if that is true but all the plasmas I have had, I have never damaged the phosphorus. If I did not game a lot or at all on the set then I can see that argument but gaming has a lot of static images and I run the ww for 30 minutes after I finish gaming. On Sunday I dont game because of football and I do not run WW

I have been doing this for 3 years now on 3 diff plasmas. I had Madden score ticker IR on my current plasma and only running slides and ww was I able to get rid of it after 3 weeks.

False. You don't need a gaming system to have to deal with static images. They can come in the form of a tv logo or DVD or blu ray menu (forget to turn off) or desktop display. I regularly hook my Panasonic plasma up to my laptop via HDMI.

I don't use a 90+ contrast ratio when I'm going to be dealing with static images for long stretches of time though.

I have the tv you were talking about earlier (Samsung 51" plasma) and I've had no problems with IR due to gaming. I've played NBA 2k12 a lot recently and even with the MyPlayer stat thing in the upper right corner the entire game, nothing has stayed on the screen. The only time I've had any IR is if I'm watching movies or shows that aren't full screen for a few hours straight, I'll see the black bars on the side but only on the blank screen when I'm switching inputs and even that will go away after 15-30 seconds. I don't know if I've just been lucky but I've had absolutely no issues with IR interfering with what I want to watch.
