Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

This year's Panasonic 60 plasma series will be the last it develops. Panasonic will continue to make plasmas....just not devote any more R&D money to creating new series.

I was just looking at this TV. About time for me to invest in one. Looking at plasma.

How many of you guys actually use 3D on your TV? I'm not sure if investing in 3D or a smartTV is worth the extra money, especially with the lack of 3D content or the option of getting a box to educate my TV. However I'm under the impression that any top of the line TV made in the last couple years is probably a smart TV.

If you are a user of Netflix and lazy like I am then a Smart TV is well worth it. Instead of having to boot up your console you can press one button and bring up Netflix.

Like you said, most top of the line tvs are going to have 1 or both of those features included. IMO smart tvs are overrated, simply because there are so many small set boxes that can give you that and do it much better (Roku, Apple TV, WDTV live, etc)

And 3D just depends on how much you like it. There is plenty of 3D content now but it's usually going to run you an extra $5-15 more than the 2D only version. (Best Buy and Amazon do seem to have 3D movies in the $20-25 range every few weeks....otherwise they are $30-40)

I don't have a 3D tv, but a 3D converter box that does a pretty good job (was less than $40). At last count I have 40 3D blu rays.

My main tv has a Roku 2 XS box and my secondary tv has a WDTV live and external hard drive.

For those who watch 3D content on their plasmas:

It took me a month to realize it after owning my plasma, but watching 3D Blu-rays with 24Hz enabled was a massive issue. It causes a very, very slight judder or flicker that made me a bit nauseous. I found that turning it off made things seamless. What's quite strange though is that with 2D Blu-rays, I need to enable 24Hz to eliminate any flicker in that image. It's all a bit weird.

Think I may go with this one! I was thinking about getting a 60" LED Vizio Smart TV but after going to Walmart and comparing the picture to other HDTV's it was noticeably worst, so I couldn't do it.
Never thought I would get a plasma because of the weight, power consumption, heat dispersion, and glare/reflections in brightly lit rooms, but it seems that plasma's have improved since a few years ago and this one has tint over the screen to reduce glare. Going to take a look at this one today, the only thing is I won't have a way to get it home, I may have to get it delivered.
Wow, the older version TC-P50S60 is only $700 at Best Buy, going there to compare them side-by-side, if the picture quality is about the same, Ill save my self $300! Looks like the only difference is 3D, which I dont care for.

Just got that TV today, the 50in version (wanted the 60in but it's a $700 difference!). It's a really nice Plasma TV, sleek looking, picture is great, and its thinner than some LED TVs. I just hooked it up haven't really have time to play with it, Ill give my impressions in a few days.

The 50" 4K HDTV from Seiki (only $1,500) gets a good initial review:

This is good news if it helps drive down the price of competing 4K sets.

Ill give 4K another couple of years to start to take off for supporting devices and content to build up.

I'm looking for a good universal remote for around $70. This is my first time having a smart TV and with its capabilities I find my self using the TV remote way more than I use to making me switch between cable and TV remote quite often. I need a universal remote that can control not only the volume, but ALL the functions on my TV and satellite/cable box.

There's a Harmony remote made by Logitech that's around $79.99. The only universal remotes I've used that I've liked has been the Harmony's. The one that's at this price range controls up to 5 devices. They're nice remotes and easy to set up. You should be able to find them at any big electronic retailer. Good luck, and if you have any questions setting it up if you go with it, let myself or Blzer know. He's the one who made myself aware of them a couple years go.

I don't know of any remoter that will give you everything----especially at $70.

But as authentic said, the search starts and ends with Harmony. The best they have on your budget is the 650 (controls 5 devices).

A marketplace seller has it for $63 shipped.

I have 2 harmony remotes and won't go back to anything else.

The bad part is, you start with the cheap ones, and after you see how great they are, you find yourself buying a $349.99 Harmony 900 for your system. URC actually makes some really good remotes as well, but they are a pain to program.
