Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

So what is the consensus on purchasing a tv today? I'm looking for something between 42" and 50" for a small bedroom to act like a den (unused bedroom). I'll have my PS4 hooked up and will most likely watch sports and some movies on it.

Do I look for a LED or wait on a 4K tv? I'd like to make my purchase nearish the holidays as I'm not in a huge rush.

Another option is to bring my 60" Samsung plasma from the basement that very rarely gets used. Reason being is that the basement is old and dark and not very inviting. Would that be overkill in a room in which there is somewhere between 8-10 feet of viewing space?

There are always lots of deals on 40-60" ones nowadays. Not sure what you want to spend, but you can get something pretty quality I bet for under 700 or so....the 4k ones and stuff will run higher.

I'd ideally like to upgrade the living room tv to 65" or 70" (probably the max for the spot on the wall between windows), but those tend to be costing me about 1k right now and I can't justify 1k. I'm betting next summer/fall they'll be down in price even more with 4k coming.

If you don't mind waiting see what you can fight for on Black Friday. 8-10 feet is plenty of room for a 60". I bet you can score a cheap 4K TV around then, but otherwise you are just fine going with LED and not spending the extra cost on an extra TV.

The better solution would be to transform your basement into a quality home theater

Bring the plasma up. It's amazing how you get used to whatever size tv you install. You'll wonder how you ever lived with a smaller set.

Plus, you are a few months away from Black Friday. Should be some decent deals out there.

I looked a few 4K TVs yesterday at BB. They're definitely sweet! In doing some research, it sounds like no tv provider will have live content broadcast in 4K until late 2015 or 2016. Directv for example will steam their VOD in 4K later this year. So, no sports for a while it seems.

I did see a reasonably priced Samsung 55" 4K for $1600. It's still a bit too high for my wallet. But if it drops to around $1000, I might jump on it.

No TV provider even broadcasts in 1080p, it's too expensive. Are you certain they will do 4K live?

(currently I believe DTV only does 1080p/24 for DTV Cinema)

You are lucky to get 1080i on a TV broadcast.

                  Yeah, it's either 760p or 1080i, you don't get 1080p usually

Not only do channels not broadcast in 1080p yet,but there's even channels that aren't HD feeds. Timeshifting channels for example, your local station is obviously in HD and all,but then there's abunch of channels in other parts of the country(not sure if it's the same for USA also) where I don't get the HD feed. So it ends up being some strange letterbox like format to watch the show.

Re: Plasma or LCD? - The TV Thread

Anyone planning to get a 4k TV with an expectation that there will be 4k broadcasts in the next couple of years are horribly misguided. It ain't happening for a long time if at all. And if it does happen the feed will be badly compressed and not look any better than the HD feed you have now which is badly compressed as well. Like people said, they haven't got the capability of providing 1080p signal and how long has this format been around. Close to a decade. I can say with 100% certainty that the vast majority of cable companies providing a quality 4K signal is at least a decade away and that's being optimistic. 4K is a gimmick just to sell more TVs just like 3d was. The technology will be limited to BR discs just like 3d was.

Cable companies will not be overhauling their infrastructure to allow for a true and quality 4k bandwidth signal. There is no reason to. It would cost way too much. And they know 90% of customers wouldn't be able to tell the difference because they don't care to or their TV is too small.

Overpaying for a 4K TV right now is ridiculous unless you're happy having absolutely no content to watch and a limited amount of 4K BRs 2 or 3 years from now. And you will probably have to buy a new receiver anyway which will be overpriced right now as well. Let the prices fall and let someone else get ripped off. 3 years from now you will get a better quality 4K TV at a much cheaper price. Its not like you'll be missing out on any 4K stuff in the meantime.

Thanks guys. Between the information you provided along with the Directv rep who was out to my home the other day to install the Genie, it seems like 4K live content is a long ways off, if ever. Think I'll narrow my focus away from the 4K TVs and find a reasonably priced 1080p around Black Friday. There's a reason I always come to this site. Great info!

Keep in mind that the very limited quantities doorbuster black friday tvs are always "bare bones" sets. The better offerings are usually a good bit more expensive--even on Black Friday.

Ex. Emerson 40" TV went for $178 vs. Samsung 40" for $397
