Scott I'm going to have to get that 4K receiver, the Denon, asap, this optical cable and different hdmi ports and crap is really annoying. You don't realize how easy you have it with a nice AVR until you have to be without one.

I think I like using "nits" the most of all the new terms.

To be honest, I feel that most people in this thread are incredibly picky and your average Joe Smoe would just go to Best Buy/Walmart/Target/Costco and get a TV they could reasonably afford and be happy with it. Hooking these 4k TVs up are really no more complicated than a regular 1080p unit; it's just when you want fancy sound systems, or are rather picky about image quality, or want a bunch of app usage is when you get into some of this nuance being discussed in detail here. A 4k unit can simply be attach the legs, make the HDMI hookups and go for a lot of people.
This mindset makes me wonder if I'd be ok with the Hisense or a Vizio under 700 and just knowing the tech details ruins a bit....just would hate to spend the money and not be minorly future proofed for HDR at least.

All this 4K technology is so confusing to me. Speaking of Vizio this is the one I have which I got on sale under $700 back near the holidays, when I finished remodel of our basement.

What confuses me is everyone talking about not only needing 4K but also HDR. Does this TV have HDR or no?

That's what i'm leaning towards eventually....have other bills and things we're working through (car needed tires and work at 100k, but great to last at least a few years now). Just read some of the reviews and while the Hisense does HDR, not as amazing as others...but the pure size upgrade from 42" will be great (and that's the primary desire...our living room's larger, so the 42" feels small and harder to see gaming words from farther away.) Maybe this summer or August when it's my birthday

It does not (at least not full-range HDR). The flagship model (JS9500) from that Sammy line is the only one with full-range HDR.

EDIT: I shouldn't say it can't accept an HDR signal. Check here for a table comparison of all of the TV's in the line. You'll have to see what the names mean though by Samsung's definitions (scroll down to the middle of the page for the table):

Yes it does do HDR10, just not as good as the 8000 series.

Great so basically a PS4 Pro would be a waste for me with this TV

So guys, got everything set up here and i'm loving it all, but a couple of questions:

                      1. I like the Samsung Smart Remote and it controls everything but I cannot figure out how to get it to adjust the volume on my Onkyo receiver. Right now it's going from the TV optical out to the Onkyo and the sound works ok, it's in 5.1 and such, but I can't figure out how to get the remote to adjust my sound. Right now when I move the volume rocker it just shows the symbol on the TV showing that it's optical out (indicating it cannot adjust volume).

On the DirecTV remote there's an actual setting to tie volume to the AVR but I cannot find anything like that in the Samsung settings.

                      2. I miss having an INFO button. Half the time the picture looks great but when I want to see the resolution and etc I cannot figure out how to do it, driving me nuts.

You can only get the samsung remote to control your Onkyo receiver is when using an HDMI cable and connected to ARC HDMI port on your Onkyo receiver and running that same HDMI cable to the one connect box from your tv. I believe it's the HDMI port 4 on your tv's one connect box and it says ARC. Then go into the tv's settings and enable the feature. Off the top of my head I can't remember what it's called..

So I got the Samsung Smart Remote to control my Onkyo by setting the Onkyo up, was working great, switched inputs to something else and then it quit working.

Now, no matter what I do it won't control the volume, just shows me that stupid optical icon when I click volume.

Anyone know how to get the volume to be "locked" to your AVR regardless of input?

I believe that's what it's called. I'm not home right now so I can't confirm but that's what it is i believe. Once you enable that and as long as your Onkyo supports ARC you'll be good to go. Just run the start up setup after you've enabled it and have the HDMI cable connected to the correct ARC HDMI port. Your tv should recognize it.

You sir are a genius, that fixed the issue. Now when I adjust volume a little picture of the Onkyo comes up instead of the two little pics of cables (optical). The wife will now be happy the Samsung remote can control everything!

This is why I come here. (mic drop) LOL
