Re: The Newsroom (HBO)
Pretty big difference between an episode being politics-heavy and near-religiously labeling and bucketizing any argument or view in order to marginalize what you disagree with and promote what you like.
But hey, you're still grumpy about your hand being slapped, I understand.
It was a good episode, nothing's changed and politics still aren't going to be debated here, and this thread is better for it.Comment

Re: The Newsroom (HBO)
I think I've come to the conclusion that I love the premise, the story, the talking points, and the slants, but the characters and their interactions still need some tweaking. I wish Sorkin would tone down the rom-com/network comedy routine type crap. I mean, as much as I enjoyed this episode there are still some really SMH parts to it. Hopefully it will improve as overall it is still a good show despite its characters.

I guess my having never watched sports night or the West Wing makes this all fresh to me.

Re: The Newsroom (HBO)
Enjoyed the third episode and maybe even like it more than the premiere. Hated the second episode though, with the whole rom-com and email ordeals.
I never saw West Wing, but loved Sports night. I do agree that most of the plots are recycled, but the only good thing in that for me is that I watched Sports night when it first aired, and so I don't even remember most of it. When something really blatant is copied, I think about it. But other than that, only the tone and characters remind me of it, which is fine because I was hoping that sports night would have continued on longer anyways.
My main complaint of the show is that I hate all of the female characters, they're just so weak compared to all the guys. They're dumbed down to the level where it's impossible to root for them or even expect them to do anything competent. One is a boss who runs a great tv show but can't manage emails, and the other needs constant validation from either her boss or on again off again boyfriend. Either make the guys have more archaic and stereotypical character flaws also so that they're on equal ground, or just make the women not be imbeciles. My football alliances: E-A-G-L-E-S Eagles AND Hokie Hokie Hokie HiComment

Totally forgot about Studio 60.
What do you guys recommend watching first: Sports Night or West Wing?

Absolutely love the show. I needed something fresh on Sunday since True Blood is no longer on my must watch list.Comment

Re: The Newsroom (HBO)
I'd watch the first episode of both and see what grabs you, and enjoy whichever at your own pace rather than try and get through them
Very different shows, still not a Sports Night fan because of the presentation of the show. Will have to give it another chance sometime since multiple people here and elsewhere have said the laugh track isn't as awful later on. Just not a fan of little 22 minute bites of comedy despite loving the dialog and cast.
I wish West Wing was cheaper to own digitally on Amazon, or wish I could convert them to Vudu at Walmart at a few bucks/season. They were expensive sets once upon a time... paying another couple bucks per episode to have access from wherever digitally is not going to win me over anytime soon.Last edited by mestevo; 07-11-2012, 12:56 PM.Comment

Re: The Newsroom (HBO)
I didn't really enjoy most of the episode. I hope they get done with the rom-com stuff soon.
