A little late, but I'd just like to add to the discussion around POC playing white characters. One of the "traditionalist" arguements is to create new, diverse characters (like Kamala Khan) while leaving the "classics" alone. Well my argument is a simple one and one that I'm surprised hasn't been mentioned.
These characters ARE new characters. All of them. Just like the ultimate universe drew inspiration from the 616 universe (prime timeline in Marvel) they took a lot of liberties with regards to origins, costumes, and even race (hello Samuel L. Fury). There was not much (if any?) backlash around the ultimate line modernizing these classic stories but there's so much backlash when it comes to the MCU doing it. But just like the ultimate line, it is a separate universe. So every single character is a new character. That's right. Every. One. Jarvis is a robot (which is apparently okay but MJ can't be half-black)!
I'm just saying Marvel has created this unique universe and is knocking it out of the park with their movies and their Netflix shows and yet people want to cry about "their" characters (even supporting characters like MJ) being "different" from what they know. At what point does Marvel earn their fans trust and at what point do people stop expecting panel for panel adaptations of the comics? It's really really sad the society we live in.
