From the looks of it people are going to fundamentally disagree with me because I'm likening skin color to other physical attributes. I just look at it in terms of "Does the character look like his/her comic book counterpart?" Again, I'm not a "traditionalist" when it comes to comics, but I can see the other side of the argument. I can't speak for everyone and say that's exactly how they're thinking, though I do think it's unfair to assume anything beyond that.

Re: Spider-Man: Homecoming
How come nobody has an issue with Aunt May being a red hot milf in these movies? I don't recall any uproar at all over that change.
Does Marissa Tomei look like this

Interesting.Last edited by The JareBear; 08-22-2016, 04:49 PM."Successful people do not celebrate in the adversity or misfortune of others."

Oh, there was backlash... on Twitter and other social media no less as KSOR24 eludes to with these sorts of things. Just maybe not on your standard predominately male Sports Lover's site, however, lol.

I am just commenting on that there 'was no uproar' over the change, when there in fact, there was.

Half those tweets are people making jokes about Aunt May being sexy, even the tone of the articles themselves are playful. Nobody crying "PC BULL****" or getting offended"Successful people do not celebrate in the adversity or misfortune of others."

Re: Spider-Man: Homecoming
People who are against this move simply don't want to lose their own identity of MJ. They relate to her. They see themselves, their sisters, families friends when they see white MJ. Her being black flips that in its head. And these people don't want to lose that identification. Even if it has the inverse positive affect on the minority groups the new MJ will identify with. It's a form of selfishness.
That's not to say they don't have merit in feeling this way. I just think those who are genuinely upset about it, to their core, need this more than the minority groups who lack representation do. These people need to be exposed to cultures, race, people they don't identify with. And while they watch the film and realize MJ is still the MJ they know and value; perhaps their world view will change for the better, even ever so slightly.
But to act like MJ or James Bond being portrayed by black people, Asian people, Latin/Spanish people is some crime against humanity, is just a sad exaggeration.Comment

Re: Spider-Man: Homecoming
Whoa!? Marisa Tomei is Aunt May?!?!
Ice Cube and Tomei - I'd watch this movie and not even care if Spiderman was in it.
Yup, he was awesome.
But if he can't reprise the role, then give me Cube.Comment

Re: Spider-Man: Homecoming
Yeah just imagining Jump Street Cube and Holland would be great. Could be a possibilty since Jump Street is a Sony property.
I do agree though that JK is and will always be the best JJJ. Probably the best cast of any comicbook movie character in history.
I'm glad that Aunt May age is actually is an normal aunt instead of a grandma. That always bugged me as a kid seeing Aunt May so old.

Re: Spider-Man: Homecoming
Everything is subjective. This is not twitter... I have more respect for the OS community as a whole, and the OS staff wouldn't allow the mentality of the vocal minority of twitter anyway. This discussion is no different, which is why this thread remains open. Nobody here has been attacked for their opinion. daflyboys was singled out after saying essentially the same thing over, and over, and over again to a majority that was clearly responding "No, we don't care". Having a majority disagree with you is not an attack.Don't you think it's subjective and arbitrary to classifiy certain characteristics as "important"? Different things are important to different people, and all the things that have been brought up are pretty much one in the same because they have to do with the character's appearance. Personally, I don't really care because it's just movie designed for entertainment, but I have a problem with this sort of mob mentality I see on social media (moreso on Twitter than here) where people get attacked for having a difference of opinion simply because race is involved (as opposed to say a costume design like I referenced earlier). It all just seems hypocritical to me. When a white actor is cast as a minority character, all you hear are complaints about the movie being "whitewashed" and anger is an acceptable reaction, but when a minority actor is given the part for a white character, any complaint is deemed unjustified. This happened when the cast for Gods of Egypt was announced. IIRC people were boycotting the movie and the director had to publicly apologize. I'm Egyptian and I couldn't care less about who was cast to portray some fictional characters, just like most of you guys don't care about how MJ is portrayed.
What I'm getting at is this. Like you said, if someone complains about the main character's best friend's outfit, he might be criticized, but it's his opinion and if he thinks that the best friend should be wearing a blazer and tie then he's entitled to that. If someone thinks that MJ should be a white girl with red hair in the movie because she's a white girl with red hair in the comics, then he's entitled to that opinion too. All I ask is that we treat it all the same. This thread has been filled with jabs at the people on the other side of the argument that I'm not sure we'd see in say a thread about Leto's Joker or Affleck's Batman, and I'm sensing that they feel alienated because of that.
That's not why people disagree with you, and I'm sure you know that. I appreciate everyone understanding the slippery slope of this discussion and posting accordingly, but lets not insult each others intelligence either. Again, this discussion does not mimic that of twitter but we are aware of the discussions out there, and partially we are discussing those... where assumptions don't need to be made. You know there's a legit reason there was an uproar over The Gods of Egypt, whether you agree or not. The historical and religious connections with that film are a far cry from our made up superhero flick here.
There are certainly different reasons different people disagree with the new MJ. Here, we discuss (and have discussed) the traditionalists' problem with it. If anyone HERE has other problems with it, and are masking it with the traditionalists argument, your subliminal cry will fall on deaf ears... take it to twitter. Those people are correctly alienated on OS, as we don't discuss those things here. And I believe we (the mods) have let a healthy amount of that to even creep in here from both sides.
So I'm not sure who you're speaking for (since you say it's not yourself), unless it's trying to merge this with a general twitter style discussion.Comment

Re: Spider-Man: Homecoming
So I watched Clown last night. I think it was this directors first film.
I liked it way more raw I thought, it was actually pretty damn scary. It was pretty funny too. Definitely a nice little "over the top horror/light comedy" type movie.
Gonna check out Cop Car next.
I don't think I've much of Tom Holland outside of Civil War, I plan on checking out some of his other performances as well"Successful people do not celebrate in the adversity or misfortune of others."
