Not a single body guard with him or anything.
I didn't really see his character as being too calm, although I understand the thought behind that.

This is brand a new big jump for Kiefer and a shock. I'd be crapping my pants and pacing everywhere if I was in that situation.

Also, though, don't forget Kiefer turned into Jack Bauer with the Iranian Ambassador and told him succinctly and repeatedly he has 3 hours to move his ships back. The only difference is Jack Bauer would have said, we need it now.

Also, the General is trying to push him to start pushing the red button for war, but Kiefer is telling him he's not ready for that at this point.

I'll keep watching of course, but like I said before (though in a stupid way), I would have preferred a slower pacing leading up to this event.

Makes me wonder what this show will be about, though. Is the whole season mostly focused on finding out who bombed the Capitol? I mean one thing I can't say I'll have too much fun with is just watching Kiefer be a president. Would have loved some stuff before this more. Of course, I can't speak with too much foresight here. I'm in.

I didn't listen hard enough if Kiefer ever actually said the word, but on 24 he used to always say "nucular" instead of "nuclear." Very glaring to me.

        2. The driving scene when the secret service guy takes Leo to the WH was distracting as you could tell that probably wasn't done outside in real life or if it was whoever in charge of the effect of lights passing by the windows really did a terrible job. It looked fake as all hell.
I noticed the same thing not only here, but recently in... I think it was in Bad Moms when I last saw this effect. The effect must be intentional, because it's really really glaring.

Man that's one of the first things I would've asked as Keifer before accepting the role because the show could be over in one season unless they have more to do than a one time crisis.

They could go one of two ways depending on who's behind the events of the capitol explosion. It could either be a show about a President who is clearly out of his depth having to guide America through a prolonged state of terror or it can turn into more political based show with foreign policy/terrorism being a big factor in it.

              Option 2 doesn't sound sustainable

              Neothwr does the first....

Not for long. A bumbling president
A country in continuous threat alert

Neither are close to believable enough to last although the 2nd probably happens to a degree.... continually stomping out threats on many levels.

Turning that into entertaining television though is another story

I'm selfishly rooting for this to pivot into a West Wing style show, but judging by all the main characters in this show it'll clearly just revolve around fear and terrorism (and to a lesser extent the awkwardness of someone this low on the totem pole becoming president, but they've already seemed to sweep a lot of that aside by the end of the pilot).

I do wonder if they're planning on something longer than a season-long mystery and manhunt

There will be both an external threat with internal threats being involved.

So 24 with a pinch of West Wing?

I think that'd satisfy both types of audiences that'd be tuning into this show.

If he "bumbles" early or is still learning I'm sure he'll right the ship or he won't have many allies.

                          Re: Kiefer Sutherland-"Designated Survivor"

So....I like this show but I think I might have to turn my mind off a bit. Now, i'm hoping this is more the case of the show runner/writers doing this for drama's sake rather than completely forgetting the aftermath of 9/11 but maaan, I'm sorry, there's no way in hell the media would be going on business as usual and absolutely tearing Kirkman left and right in the wake of the Capitol being blown to smithereens. I know the circumstances are a bit different but for at least 3 months after 9/11 the entire media was completely on board with whatever the government was spewing out to the point where half truths and outright lies were taken as Gospel.

I also find it hard to believe that a governor would go completely rogue the way the governor did in this episode. I can understand insubordination but to the point of not taking calls and being outright rude to the president is unfathomable. Yes, I know Kirkman came from obscurity but in a time of crisis I think people would follow the prudent path.

That being said, I did enjoy this episode. I love what they've done with Kirkman as the HUD secretary he's not supposed to be an overtly political guy so now that he's thrust in this position he's trying to take control by trying to fix the little things and being pragmatic rather than completely off the rails emotionally. This is a good move for the series IMO as it portrays a man who's not used to the political BS and pressures of people pulling him in all directions but one who will stand his ground and control the situation as much as he can.

I really get the feeling that there's a lot of chess pieces in play as you don't know if the presidential aide is completely on Kirkman's side and that congresswoman....I dunno, the last image of her makes me feel like she might want to make a powerplay at some point.

I like that this show is trying to be political but at the same time adding enough thriller type aspects to it.

Second episode was terrible and has me considering not watching any further.

The "backlash" crap and the FBI agent lady with her "what if it WASN'T..." crap mainly. They had a chance to make the show distinct but all it's done is fall into garbage trope after garbage trope.

                              Ugh. Ugh ugh ugh.

It is what it is. I enjoyed the second episode , but the premise itself might be too hard to pull off.
