      Nice article.

      I found this quote interesting:

They [developers] have to deal with the bloat of the OS, which eats up nearly 100 MB of memory (and one SPU), and provides very little functionality to the game. In comparison, the OS for the Xbox is rumored to only use up 3.5 MB.

People will be rather upset at 196 titles not working and I imagine that number to rise. Nothing is worse than the XBOX 360 BC where we haven't had an update in 3 months.

The Ps3 has its own Emoton engine chip which is seperate, There is absoluteley no emulation as its essentially a PS2! Where as the Xbox 360 is software emulation.

From what I read you're right and the pics that i've seen shows the EE Chip and PS1 Chip as well on the main logic board. Still there is a problem with some of the titles not working correctly.

I'm sure Sony will get it fixed with their PS3 updates.

The reality is that the friend’s list support that Sony have provided in their libraries is terrible. From within a game, you are notified when your friends sign on and sign off (with a nice translucent overlay)…and that’s about it. Developers have no way of interfacing with this list in any useful manner. You can’t find out if your friends are watching a movie, surfing the net or playing another game. If you send them an invite, you have to hope they sign on to the same game you’re playing before they’ll even see it. Furthermore, there is currently no functionality to even “accept” the invite. It’s just a message to come join a game; it won’t actually take you to the game. Developers have to deal with that problem themselves.

After all of the copying Sony did from Microsoft for their on-line service, they forgot the best part. It's so easy to invite friends to games on Live. After reading reviews and watching videos of people playing games I'm glad that I won't be picking up an PS3. I was interested in Resistence but after playing Gears of War I'm no longer intrigued by anything Sony has to offer.

So Sony's goal with online is to make money, not actually allow people to play games.

I will gladly keep paying my 50 bucks a year to have xbox live.

You guys are correct, Sony even said that they will have the PS1/2 chipsets in the PS3 and then once they have emulation worked out almost to a tee, then they can pull out those chipsets and work with emulation. This will then make the PS3 a bit cheaper as their pulling out these 2 chipsets.

I hope there's a list of those 196 games coming, because I still have some PS2 games.

Also, good to hear that Sony is thinking of cost-cutting measures, since BC won't be an issue by the time Gran Turismo 5 comes out (first quarter 2008).

This part of the article is actually wrong. I can't find the link, but the PS3 OS now has 64MB of RAM and an SPE reserved for the OS. The 360 has 32MB of RAM reserved for the OS and uses a small percentage of 2 of the 3 processor cores. This info was leaked over year ago.

HD-DVD uses superior codec technology which makes disc space a moot point.

I wanted to add this article here too:

From the outset we were happily surprised by the substantial improvement in image quality being delivered by the $500 Toshiba HD-DVD player. And after investing $1000 for the Samsung BD-P1000, we were expecting to see at least comparable results. After all, the player is twice the money, and the discs are encoded in the same 1080p resolution format. How different could it be?

Quite different, as it turns out. The Blu-ray launch delivered a rude surprise—picture quality that is moderately better than that available on standard DVD, but not rising to the level of anything one could call high definition. We viewed The Fifth Element, Terminator, and The House of Flying Daggers side by side in their DVD and Blu-ray versions, deriving the same results from each test: the Blu-ray discs showed somewhat better contrast and detail over their DVD counterparts. But the difference was not nearly as dramatic as the comparisons between DVD and HD-DVD. Moreover, none of the Blu-ray discs matched the higher quality of the HD-DVDs.
