I'm also disappointed it's only available in black, at least the initial shipment, although at this price I seriously doubt i'll be getting one at launch unless I see something major and so far I see no reason to lay down $700 once you factor the other crap you gotta buy when you get a new system.

Re: Playstation 3 Information, hardware, games discussion Part II
Also remember that the Blu-Ray drive in the PS3 is only 2x, 72mbps, which is about 9MBps. That makes the 12X DvD in the 360 faster. Which I would assume slower load times on the ps3? Can this be correct? WTH Sony.Last edited by xythander; 05-10-2006, 04:11 PM.Comment

Originally posted by USF11During the pre-E3 conference Sony stated the Hard Drive would be used to shorten load time dramatically. Just like XBOX 1 with the HD being standard, games will be programmed to utilize the HD to shorten loadtimes.
there is 7 GB set aside for caching (iirc)
I don't doubt that streaming capabilities of Blu-Ray is at least one reason that the HDD is standard in the first place to use for faster load times.Comment

I'm really surprised that companies like SONY and MS never placed faster DVD drives in any of their revisions of each system. Maybe this gen will be different.Comment

Originally posted by candyman56Also remember when a new technology comes out like CD, DVD, DVD-9, HD-DVD, and Blu-Ray the players and recorders are always at the 2x speed. I never understood that, but with time they will get faster and faster. We know with consoles that this probably will never be upgraded.

1) Cost factor goes down on the parts you start out with. For example a drive that cost $50 in the beginning of the system life cycle may cost them $5-10, three years later.
2) Putting in better parts later to increase performance has a backlash effect. You'll pi$$ off the faithful and early adopters and you'll make people wait in the future when the new system comes out.Comment

Hasn't that worked for Apple with the IPOD? If this was done twice during a systems lifespan than I can see it working out. People weren't pissed off that bought the original PS2 when the slim came out.Comment

Originally posted by candyman56I'm not saying that with everytime a new technology comes out to update the system. When the slim PS2 was released they released a few extra capabilities to it than the "Fatty" PS2, where it had the network adaptor built-in, Progressive Scan, IR Remote sensor built-in, and a few small other things that were dvd related.

The iPod example may not apply to this as well because remember Apple is selling a Nano or iPod Mini or whatever with higher specs i.e. more capacity. But if i'm not mistaken they tend to create different Model# and Sku's.

Are any of the gaming stores/sites taking PS3 preorders? I'm excited about this system.Comment

Re: Playstation 3 Information, hardware, games discussion Part II
Bloody heck I wasn't excited when the slimline PS2 came out. I owned my PS2 from DAY ONE of launch and when the slimline PS2 came out I was also first on board to buy one of those badboys. I wouldn't exactly call that being somewhat upset now would any of you?Streaming PC & PS5 games, join me most nights after 6:00pm ET on TwitchTV https://www.twitch.tv/shaunh20

FWIW, I'm not going to say that I will NEVER own a PS3. One thing is for certain, I won't own one at launch, not at that price. I'm sure i'll have one at some point."Never trust a big butt and a smile."-Ricky Bell

Re: Playstation 3 Information, hardware, games discussion Part II
Originally posted by RodsterI think the main point overall has to do with cost over performance. Your point regarding the Slim PS2 is well taken but the reason Sony switched designs was because of the inherent design problems with their original drives with the DDE problems. I believe they were able to shrink the CPU/Audio/Video all on one Chip with the Slim design.

Can you imagine how the xbox could be in a smaller version? Since MS has no plans to remodel the xbox, we won't see a smaller version.Comment
