You should really just roleplay the character however you want and not worry about the "best" way to create him. Mine has Blunt and Blade, which is counterproductive, but I do like to use them both as I acquire different weapons.

I know..I am spending a lot of time, but i want to get the best out of a gladiator type player. Then I plan on going back and creating a Mage type player.

yeah, i don't mind having blade and marksman, though Terry's advice is good...I used Blade a lot more early on, but once I got into things more I used more and more arrows...Didn't really want to use magic with that char, so it makes sense.

And yes, this is as close to a MMORPG as you can get on a single player console game. I just wish quest NPC's had question marks above their heads

I'm pathetic. I paid $70 for the Collector's Edition on 360 and the 50 for the PC version. You're right, I love mods...my Dremoran Spellsword in Pearl Armor:

Not a problem...but camulos is right. Create the guy the way you want to play, that's the beauty of the Elder Scrolls series. I've played them for as long as they've been around, dating back to Elder Scrolls: Arena on the DOS platform. It's about freedom. Don't take my advice as the "perfect" thing to do, I just tend to focus on very specific things that I want my character to do.

Another character that you'd enjoy more may indeed want to do everything, in which case your character build is perfect. Matter of fact, here's another perspective on your character...

You're a warrior that moonlights as a thief.

You spend your days in heavy armor with the blade skill, just going toe to toe. When you want to go stealth, with your sneak/security/marksman/light armor, you can instantly shift to a completely invisible shadow. Don the leather armor, tread lightly, and impale goblin jugulars with elven arrows from afar.

I mean, it's however YOU want to play the character, not a magic "best" character. My advice is just on personal preference, because I tend to build a character that is very, very focused on a specific goal. You may enjoy blade/marksman/heavy/light/sneak/security/destruction, who knows.

              A couple of other questions.

              1. What about the Personality traits. I read somewhere that Mercantile and Speechcraft was pretty useless.

              2. What weapons go with Blunt and is there ever a time Hand to hand is used?

Re: Official Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Discussion

                1. Mercantile and Speechcraft are useless as MAJOR skills. You can level them up extremely easily just by doing the persuasion minigame on everybody you meet, and ensuring that you use the haggle slider with vendors. As a major, though, they kind of gimp your ability because they don't really "do" anything as one of your 7 major skills.

                2. Axes and clubs are "blunt"...even though I think it's very weird that an axe would be a "blunt" weapon. Common sense tells me that blunt weapons would work better on skeletons, etc...but I've never tested the theory. I have no idea, because a sword cuts them up just fine as well. As far as hand to hand, I know a monk uses hand to hand. I've never tried making just a martial artist...I may try that next.

                Hand to hand
                Athletics
                Acrobatics
                Light Armor
                Alteration
                Sneak
                Restoration

Go around as a kung fu type guy (took alteration so I could water walk, etc). I assume hand to hand has the same type of benefits at master level as a weapon would...disarms, paralyze, etc.

Thanks TCrouch...this my first RPG of the magnitude. I can't believe there is so much behind these skills and the different variations and combos makes this game so ridiculous. I am so happy I bought this game, but my Wife may not feel the same way, oh well

Tell me about it. My wife was joking last night that she misses me...despite the fact that I've been home every night. What's worse, I'm taking up the "main" TV, a 57" 1080i HD set to play Oblivion on pretty much every waking hour for two straight weeks. I might start getting kicked to the PC soon, although she's usually very cool like that; she just wants to play Burnout on the 360 and Top Spin 2, etc. Lately she's been taking her mage through the game on the PC version.

One thing I try to do is stick to skills I'll actually use. I always like the idea of alchemy but forget to use it during large stretches of the game.

My Character is a Nord Warrior and I took:
                      Armorer
                      Athletics
                      Blade
                      Block
                      Blunt
                      Heavy Armor
                      Mercantile

I agree with what TCrouch said about speechcraft and mercantile being somewhat useless as majors, but it fits my character in this case. I also use it much more than some other skills I could have taken since I'm always selling gear to merchants from recent victims of my warhammer.

I usually stay away from Magic, although I do plan on doing an all magic character at some point to see what else the game has to offer and get a chance to do the mages guild quests.

                          Here's a leveling/realism mod that looks intrigueing.

We need a list of all the mods PC users have installed. It's impossible to keep track of all these mod sites and forums.

I'll bet i'm the only one who gets drunk on Friday/Saturday night while playing Oblivion and taking my Thief into local pubs and having him get virtually drunk right along with me. LOL.

Or does anyone else ever do this?

And actually Speechcraft and Mercantile are definitely not useless if you are role playing and want a character who is a silver tongued devil who is good at smooth talking people and bartering. Not everything in the game, as has been said, has to be about the quickest way to "win". It's the journey as they say, not the destination.

speechcraft works with my thief nature, i can get people to see my way pretty easily, you're right. Plus I can't think of something else i'd swap it with, gotta keep this stuff in mind I guess. My thief wouldn't carry an axe for instance.
