                      Wii to be under $220

                      25,000 yen = $222.737 USD

Nintendo Forecasts Annual Profit Drop on Stronger Yen (Update2)
May 25 (Bloomberg) -- Nintendo Co., the world's biggest maker of handheld video-game players, said profit will fall 34 percent this fiscal year as a stronger yen cuts the value of overseas assets and curbs gains from the sale of new consoles.

Net income will drop to 65 billion yen ($576 million) in the year ending March 31 from 98.4 billion yen in the year just ended, the Kyoto-based company said in a statement today. Sales will rise 18 percent to 600 billion yen from 509.2 billion yen.

Nintendo, which earns about 70 percent of sales outside of Japan, reported higher earnings last year as it sold investments and gained from foreign currency assets of about $2.9 billion. The drop in earnings masks a rebound in sales as the company adds new features to its DS portable game player and introduces a motion-sensitive controller with the Wii home console in November.

``The Wii has piqued many game developers' interest and will do significantly better than its previous console in grabbing share,'' said Yoichiro Watanabe, an analyst at Mito Securities Co. in Tokyo who has a ``neutral'' rating on Nintendo. ``The Wii is going to be very developer-friendly and that puts them at a strategic advantage'' because of the interesting games that will be introduced.

Operating profit, or sales minus the cost of goods sold and administrative expenses, will rise 22 percent to 110 billion yen from 90.03 billion yen last fiscal year.

Shares of Nintendo fell as much as 10 percent after the earnings announcement. The stock dropped 7.9 percent to 17,480 yen at the 3 p.m. close on the Osaka Securities Exchange.

                      Yen Forecasts

Nintendo forecasts the yen to trade at an average 110 against the dollar this fiscal year, and at 140 against the euro.

The company, creator of the Super Mario character, is counting on the release of the Wii console to win market share in home gaming from Sony Corp. and Microsoft Corp.

The player won't cost more than 25,000 yen, said Yoshihiro Mori, Nintendo's senior managing director, at a news conference in Osaka. The company expects to ship 6 million Wii consoles this fiscal year, and about 17 million software games for the device.
Nintendo, which has dominated the handheld gaming market since the introduction of the Game Boy in 1989, is also adding features such as a Web browser and television tuner to its DS portables to spur sales.

About 16 million DS handhelds will be shipped this year, from 11.5 million in the year just ended, the company said. Nintendo also plans to sell 70 million games for the DS this year, compared with 50 million shipped last year.

                      `High Expectations'

``We have high expectations'' for Wii and its controller, Shin Unozawa, an executive at Namco Bandai Holdings Inc.'s game unit, said at an industry gathering in Tokyo today. He said the number of Wii titles hasn't been decided yet.

For the three months ended March 31, Nintendo's net income declined 69 percent to 6.19 billion yen from 19.7 billion yen a year earlier, according to figures calculated by subtracting nine-months figures from the full-year data reported today. The company declined to provide fourth-quarter results.

Sales in the quarter rose 1 percent to 96.9 billion yen from 95.9 billion yen. Operating profit slid 10 percent to 7.57 billion yen from 8.42 billion yen.
