Yeah right, I guess I took a chance... Like I said I was unlucky to have my 360 crap out after six months rather than right out of the box. Which is sad when you think about it.

Originally posted by TJdaSportsGuyNo, it would have been better for you to buy the extended warranty to begin with.
-How much have you spent on extended warranties for various products you own? I asume you have many electronic items that you've bought warranties for such as TV, dvd player, bviously your 360, etc.
-How much have you saved so far in repairs so far for these products? I'm talking here about items for which you have had to use the extended warranty, not the regular warranty.
My point is people are often so afraid they may have to pay 100 or 200 bucks to get something fixed that the spend 50 here and there for extended warranties and in the end they end up spending more in total for these warranties than what they would have paid for getting defective items fixed. I'm aware you could be unlucky and have multiple items with defects but I'm sure that's extremely unlikely.
So overall, if you have many products that you could buy warranties for, in almost all cases it's cheaper for you to not buy any extended warranties and just pay for repairs if something breaks. Of course, if the warranties come with maintenance services then it's a bit different.
The other thing is that I believe if the product is truly defective, it usually fails during the initial warranty period, unless it's not being used. I'm pretty sure that most 360s failing after the warranty period do so because of overheating issues, which can be prevented by keeping the console in a well ventilated area and maybe adding a cooling accessory. If I were the original poster and there was no way to get my console fixed for free then I'd just pay for repairs. I wonder if you get a new warranty on the repairs. I know when they replace the system you have a new warranty but what if they just repair it?
In my case, if I had bought extended warranties for every product I own that offered one, I would have spent well over $300 on them. Yet I have never had anything go defective after a warranty is over. And even if I had to get my 360 repaired for $150, that would still be less than the $300 I would have paid for all these warranties. Before someone tells me that the 360 warranty is much less than $300, my point is since you don't know which products are going to need repairs and you want protection, you pretty much have to buy these warranties for every major purchase, which drives your expenditures up. In itself, paying for a 360 extended warranty is no big deal but when you throw in TVs, DVD players (not so much anymore cause they're cheap but when I got mine it was $400), appliances, PCs and whatnot you can spend a bundle on warranties, much more than what you might have to pay in repairs.
Defective products rarely have to be flat out thrown out and replaced. People often judge the value of the warranty because they expect to save the full value of the product if something happens, which is rarely the case. MS flat out excahnged systems early not because they couldn't be fixed but rather because it allowed them to get 360s back to the customers quicker. I'm sure all defective units were fixed and sent back to other customers.Last edited by mercalnd; 05-27-2006, 11:58 AM.Comment

It would have been better for me if the thing crapped out from day one.Joshua:

I may have been lucky, but I kept each system until the latest thing came out. My luck ran out with the 360.

Re: HELP! My 360 just died... what can I do?
You knew full well going into your purchase that there have been problems with the system, there have been numerous reports of crashing, faulty systems.
I regret not buying the warranty, I'm just praying mine never breaks. If it does, I'll deal with it then, but I'm not going to complain to MS because they wont replace my system for free when it is my fault, as a consumer who knew going into my purchase that there have been numerous reports of faulty systems and defected systems, that I didn't buy the warranty.Comment

The producer has no right to sell a product that turns out to be defective after the short warranty runs out.
Ok so if I buy a 360 and it breaks after a year...can I complain about MS selling defective products or claim they sold a lemon? How about after six mos? When does it stop being a defective product?Comment

Re: HELP! My 360 just died... what can I do?
Well guys, my Xbox 360 died about 45 minutes ago.
So I called up 1800XMyXbox and spoke with a woman, and she gave me the same run around about I was 12 days over warranty. So I asked to speak with her supervisor. This is exactly what I said, "I purchased the original Xbox at launch, and purchased thousands of dollars in games/accesories. I then purchased a Xbox 360 and right now have about a thousand invested in it. I know my warranty expired 12 days, but I feel this is a defect in the system, and I'd appreciate a little help from MS".
Low and behold, it worked, and they apologized and sending me a box out, should be here Monday. She then said, I could buy an extended warranty which I will this time around. So I'd try back again if I was you man, and see what they can do. Good luck.Comment

You guys are COMPLETELY MISSING THE POINT! It is widely known there are operating problems with xbox 360's. (Just read threads on this board!) That is MICROSOFT'S FAULT, not the consumers. They should be replacing every defaulty 360 that's out there with or without the stupid lamearse extended warranty.
If this was just dumbluck that your 360 broke then yes, you should have to have an extended warranty, but it's crystal frickin clear this is a manufacturing defect!

what that means is after you read about all the defective 360's a lightbulb didn't click on that said 'hey, all these people are having problems, maybe I should buy the warranty and not take the chance?'
Yes, it's MS's fault for having some defective system...but it's YOUR fault for not taking precautions and buying the warranty.Comment

But then again, as I said, if the console is truly defective, there is almost a 100% chance that it will "die" before the 3 month warranty is out. Anything past that and the defect most likely has to do with overheating, which is more than likely tied in to usage/environment and then you're responsible.Comment
