The Wii Launch Guide was sketchy on this. The part you quoted makes it sound like you do, but in the description of the classic controller it says the two thumbsticks were added to make playing GC games easier, so I'm not sure how it will work.

Yeah, the guide says to enable N64 and GC playback...

Seems like it should work.

Does this mean I have to pick up a GCN controller or will the Wii Classic Controller work with GCN games?

I hope that the Wii Classic controller works, I would hate to have 3 different controllers for the Wii. Very poor design by Nintendo if this is the case.

One side of the Wii(or at least a little part of a side) is dedicated to the GC. It has controller inputs and memory card inputs.

Compared to being able to save on a SD is sucks, but compared to having a terrible and short list of backwards compatible games(see: 360) it is a decent trade off. You can get a 128 MB GC MC for under $10 on eBay brand new. It is an annoyance, but I would much rather have it than not be able to play GC games, since there were so many good exclusives for that system that most people never got a chance to play.

This kind of sucks if you ask me. It's like were spending more money on damn accessories but I can understand the memory card issue since we weren't we needed memory cards for the PS1 when playing games on the PS2 due to the formats.

The Wii doesn't need memory cards, it has 512 of flash memory. I'm not sure on Gamecube games being able to be saved on it, but just like the PS2, PS1 games couldn't be saved on a PS2 memory card. To Nintendo's defense, if you have Gamecube games, you probably have a Gamecube memory card. (they are only 14.99 anyway).

Same with the controllers. I have no idea if the classic controller will work with the Cube, but don't you have a Cube Candy? I have 4 Cube controllers as well as 4 bongos (!!!!) I have a wavebird as well, not sure if that'll work though.

I haven't had a Cube in 1.5 years.

I'll probably buy a cheap memory card + a wavebird if it comes down to it where the Retro Controller doesn't work. You know that there will be tons of Cube accessories on clearance this time of year to make room for Wii.

Candy, you're getting a Wii @ launch? I'm going back and forth, mainly for my daughter although the new Zelda game has my interest along with a few others. Might get it for Christmas as a "family" gift or something.

I'm thinking of going to Wal-Mart early on a Saturday night and wait for one, maybe...

I'm almost 95% that I'm going to get one. I'll try on 11/19 to go to the Best Buy where I bought the Gamecube on launch. I walked in an hour after they opened the doors and walked out with a Cube. I'll just go there an hour or two before they open the doors and hope to get one. If not, I can wait till shipments are replenished in November.

I'm about 98% sold on one for a family type gift for Christmas. I think my first attempt will be on Saturday night at Wal-Mart. If that fails, then the Blockbuster (GameRush) will be selling them at 10:00 AM. I figure noone will go there for one, and I'll be set. If I have to wait til late November/early December so be it, won't be opened til Christmas anyway.
