I started turning off items with Melee. It's much more fun, just you vs. your opponents, no gimmicky items there with you. Although the assist trophies are kind of cool. Except for the Nintendog. Who seriously thought THAT was a good idea?

          Re: Super Smash Brothers: Brawl(Wii)

I just got my Wii and this game yesterday. The main reason I decided to go with a Wii was because Kart is coming out soon, but this game was certainly a big factor as well.

I wasn't huge into the 64 version like a few of my friends (partly because I sucked at it and didn't totally understand it) and never played it on GC. I understand the basic controls and different attacks but two things I don't understand are...

          - The aerial attacks when someone has been knocked off the edge and trying to recover. Let's say I knock someone off the edge but of course they're going to recover and come back. Can I jump up after them and hit them again while they're far away from land? Every time I try to do this I miss them and fall to my death.

          - When an opponent barely recovers after being knocked off land and they're hanging from the side of the cliff, is there anyway to run over and kick them in the face or whatever to knock them down? I can't seem to do this and it annoys me.

Besides that I have most of the game down pat and it's fun as hell, now I just need a few my controllers and I'll be good to go!

            Re: Super Smash Brothers: Brawl(Wii)

You can do the first one (sometimes it's very effective), but you have to make sure to double jump afterwards or use your own recovery method (left/right B if it moves horizontally or up B) in order to get back. Sometimes it's beneficial to grab the ledge on your return so your opponent can't.

Sometimes you can attack them, but most of the time you can't.

              Re: Super Smash Brothers: Brawl(Wii)

Another thing I can't get a hold of is the difference between strong attack and a smash attack.

That's supposedly for a strong attack

And that's for a smash attack.

I don't know which one I keep doing, but I can only do one of them and I'm pretty sure it's the strong attack. Any advice on how to differentiate these two?

I can do them both, but I'm not consistant enough yet with the "tap" vs "tilt"...I just use the shaking of the wiimote to get the smash attack (or with the GC I think it's "c", and on the classic controller it was the right stick as well). I had to turn on the shaking of the wiimote in the controller profile, but that's worked ok for me so far.

I think as you play you'll get better with tap vs. tilt, I just haven't played enough.

I didn't even see that in the instructions, all you have to do is shake the wiimote and you get a smash attack? That's when using the nunchuck as well I assume.

If you hold it down before releasing A, it should show your character flashing and holding their current position. That's a smash. If you don't see that, it's a strong attack.

Thanks, I'll keep an eye on that. Do you use the Wii shake or the button combo for the smash attacks?

Ive been using the button combo. Also if you have the funds go to a GS and pick up a GC controller for like 15 bucks. It might be a better way to play the game.

I use the GS controller I had sitting around from my old GC... I feel it's the way the game's supposed to be played, IMO.

I have a friend that brought one over. It really does feel "right", just don't know if the controller is leaving soon. Hahaha.

$15 is no problem, I was planning on getting some GC controllers anyway for Mario Kart. Maybe I'll make a trip after work today.

Gamestop sells new Nintendo brand wired Gamecube controllers for $25. If you want a used one or a used off-brand they can be about half of that price, but if you want a new one from GS, it's $25.

I'm really liking the WiiMote + Nunchuck setup myself. The GC controller works pretty good as well, but after playing through Mario Galaxy with WiiMote + Nunchuck, it feels very comfortable to me.
