    Re: Super Smash Brothers: Brawl(Wii)

I'm playing through and having fun in the classic solo mode on normal...Question though, am I the only one who feels like he's just mashing buttons and sometimes it takes no skill to win? I swear, sometimes I'll have teammates on a level, clear the level, and not have a clue what the hell happened. Other times i'll die and it seems random. Some levels I'm able to use strategy, but half the time I end up just button spamming and it seems to work. I know I haven't played past SSB games much, and I'll get better as I play, but I really hope it's not just a button masher.

I felt like that the first few times I played Classic mode. The matches with a teamate sometimes you don't have to do anything, especially when you go against the Kongs. I eventually remembered my old N64 Smash Brothers days and picked up on the controls and now I feel in complete control over my character and the button mashing, although sometimes still effective, isn't my main weapon. Just for comparison, the first 8-10 times I attempted Classic mode I was able to get to the final boss just about every time, but I never beat it. Since I've started to get more comfortable using special moves and such, I've beaten the hand two out of three times I've reached him.

Playing online will help separate button mashing from actually using the moves.

Also, I noticed your SSB friend code in your sig, I added it to the list in the Online sub-forum, go get other people's numbers to add to your friend list.

Did you add my SSB friend code or did you get some kind of notification that I added you? I added you yesterday in the morning. I'm just curious as to how the system works, I think both people have to add each other separately for it to work...

I've never felt like any of the Smash games were button mashers. I think a lot of this has to do with it being 4 players at a time and because the arenas are bigger. It's not two fighters facing off face to face. There's platforms and all kinds of arena conditions that alter the fight to where you need to know what to use and when.

I think the biggest fault with this game is the items. This time around they added a lot of cool new items but a lot of them are super powerful. Before it used to be all about the hammer, but now you have like 5 different things that can kill you almost instantly. And it seems like it's just a race for the Final Smash ball when it appears (which seems to happen more then any other item, unfortunately). Even with items on low, there seems to be too many overly powerful items. These awesome items should be rare and it should be rewarding when you get them. Now when I see them my heart sinks because I know someone is going to get an instant kill and ruin the whole flow of the game.

It is not a button masher except for beginners. If you mash buttons against competent human opponents you will have close to zero shot of beating them unless you luck into a powerful item or something. Try it against a really good human opponent and you're not going to spend much time on the ground. You can use some of the characters like a scalpel.

I'm not on the net with the game yet but can some of the items be shut off like with off-line play?

I'll just keep playing...it's addictive, and nice to know there's more strategy as I get used to the controls.

I have made it to the Hand 2 times and beat him, but then lost to the first (unlockable?) guy named something like Marel I think.

I'll add more people to my friends list tonight! Haven't tried online yet.

I'll add you tonight to my friends list, but it probably will be too late when I get home to actually play.

You Smash Bros vets might not agree, but I think the Master Hand is a pretty silly final boss. It looks like you are fighting Mickey Mouse's giant hand or something. I was hoping they brought in a new final boss this time.

Definitely...I'm up for some online play soon!

From the "outsider" point of view I felt the Master Hand battle was just "WTF"...It's completely different than the rest of the game. It's like you go from normal SSB fighting to some weird normal game boss battle. Just makes the flow of the game change, and I'm not sure it's that good of a change. Just a note from a new player to the series.

That's how I feel about it too. It's just a weird change of pace to end up fight a floating hand. I'd rather just fight a giant Bowser or Ganon or someone like that. Or maybe a tag team of the two of them.

Just got in a bunch of matches online. There is some lag, but surprisingly it didn't mess up my game too much. I was killing it with Fox. I did have 2 matches that were ridiculously laggy and it took some time before it allowed me to even hit start and drop out of it. Other then that, wait times are pretty low and the action is intense. I was playing random people in free for alls and team battles. Good times.

Anyone know if you can have 2 players on one Wii playing online?

Post your Smash Brothers friend code(different from your normal Wii friend code...thanks Nintendo!) here:

                          http://www.operationsports.com/forum...d.php?t=242506

Also add everyone else on that list so we can start having 4 player friend games, they are easier to connect to than the With Anyone fights.

Yes, there are item customization options in the character select screen.

I agree, it's an odd choice for the final boss, although I have found it to be a pretty tough fight, so it works in the respect.

So I've finally gotten into some good games, just with randoms so far though. Most games are lag free, which is nice.

I pretty much suck. I played 15 games just now with 4 players, I only won once. Usually I was 3rd or 4th. One of my problems was self-destructions (especially when I tried Fox and Yoshi) with quick moves. I also really never even tried to block moves, which I need to start to do. Its just so quick, i forget about the shield button.

So how do we actually open up new characters? I can't seem to figure it out. I played the regular challenge mode, beat the weird hand thing, and then I fought a different character (can't remember who) but I lost- would I have had to beat him to open him up?
