I wish they had just re-created Midship. Capture the flag games on Midship were absolutely epic.

                    Bungie Weekly Update

                    Achievements Unlocked

Inevitably, this will be blown out of context, misread and misunderstood, but let’s do it anyway.

For a number of reasons ranging from obvious to sublime, Title Update 2 (which is the new, hip, Xbox 360-version way of saying “Auto Update” or “Patch”), introduces new Achievements to Halo 3. Last weekend at Penny-Arcade Expo we played Assembly on the TU2, which meant that folks would see and buzz about the new achievements. These will be made live when TU2 turns on later this month - the previously announced date may slip a bit closer to the Halo 3 one-year anniversary.

Here’s a look at these achievements which can be earned via the Legendary Maps and Halo 3 Campaign:
                    • Vidmaster Challenge: Lightswitch (0 points) – Get to the rank of Lieutenant in any playlist in the new EXP progression system.
                    • Vidmaster Challenge: 7 on 7 (0 points) – Enter into any ranked or social playlist with 7 EXP on the 7th of the month.
                    • Vidmaster Challenge: Annual (0 points) – After 9/25/08, complete Halo on 4-player Legendary LIVE co-op, with Iron, and everyone in Ghosts.
                    • Double Double (25 points) – On a Legendary map, get two Double Kills during any ranked or social match.
                    • Poor Yorick (25 points) – On a Legendary map, get 3 Oddball melee kills during any ranked or social match.
                    • Came…From…Behind (50 points) – On a Legendary map, get 3 assassinations during any ranked or social match.
                    • Defend This (50 points) – On a Legendary map, get a flag melee kill during any ranked or social match.
                    • Flag Dropped (25 points) – On a Legendary map, get 2 flag carrier kills during any ranked or social match.
                    • Road Rage (25 points) – On a Legendary map, get 5 Warthog chaingun kills during any ranked or social match.
                    • Look Both Ways (50 points) – On a Legendary map, get a Splatter Spree during any ranked or social match.

As folks have seen, these aren’t the only achievements we’re adding. But without proper context, there’s not a whole lot else we’re going to say. Stay tuned.

                    Title Update 2

Like we’ve said previously, there’s a bunch of under-the-hood changes in TU2 that will be largely invisible to players. Things like rare occurrences of crashes, server-side support for data collection, making more data available and consumable for internal use – you know, the sort of bullet points that warm engineering loins and sing the rest of us a lullaby.

There are also some “peace of mind” changes that should improve player experiences online in Halo 3. We’ve done a bunch of work to increase our ability to detect cheating. The numbers of bans on the banhammer threads ebb and flow, but not a day goes by sans bans. These changes will make that science even more exact than it already is.

Title Update 2 will also introduce a brand new type of ban. This is one Shishka and I are super excited for. It’s harsh, it’s metered fairly and most of all, when it hits you, it hurts so bad. This new spike on the banhammer will soon drip wet with the blood of jerks and the innards of sinners.

Another thing we’d file under the “peace of mind” changes portion of TU2 is that we’ll be taking a much closer look at habitual quitters and their contribution to the Halo 3 population. It’s no secret that players quitting out of a game makes a suboptimal experience for those left behind, from black screen host migrations, to the general sour-taste losing while down-a-man actually leaves. For the purposes of this week’s update, this isn’t a “don’t quit or you’ll be banned” threat – but instead, a courteous notification that this is something we’re investigating and intend to continue investigating in the coming months.

The most visible change coming to Halo 3 in TU2 is the in-game addition of Playlist Ratings. We’ve talked about Playlist Ratings before, but here’s a quick recap:
                    • Playlist Ratings are the playlist-level decoupling of Trueskill values (the in-game number next to your name) from Experience (the icon next to your name).
                    • You will now have a separate military rating (based purely on EXP) in each playlist. When TU2 goes live, everyone will begin at 0 EXP. This means that being a General in a Playlist is based on how many games you’ve won in the Playlist, not based on the Trueskill number next to your name.
                    • Your Trueskill values have not been reset. If someone checks your Service Record they will still see your Highest Skill.
When is Assembly going to be released?

As we said last week, there is currently no release plan for Assembly. When we know, we’ll let you guys know. Notice how this summer we haven’t done too much tantalizing or teasing or talking about anything we’re working on? It certainly wouldn’t seem too fair to do too much of that when we don’t know how or when things will eventually surface. Moonbase Alpha hasn’t gone anywhere.

When are the Legendary Maps going to be free?

We have not been informed of any plans to make the Legendary Map pack free. Scoop it up.

This is a supposed list (that's making it's way around the internet) of all the upcoming maps. The names and descriptions do sound legit.

Rumor: Heretic - Internal Name: midship.map
Because of its speed and luxury the Pious Inquisitor has become an irresistible prize during these dark times. 2-8 players

                      Citadel - Internal Name: fortress.map
In the heart of this Forerunner structure, far above the troubled surface of the Ark, another battle rages. 2-6 players

                      Assembly - Internal Name: descent.map
The Covenant war machine continues its march to conquest; even with its head severed it is still dangerous. 2-8 players

                      Sandbox - Internal Name: sandbox.map
This endless wasteland still holds many secrets. Some of them are held more deeply than others. 4-12 players

                      Orbital - Internal Name: spacecamp.map
With a lot of situational awareness, and a little luck, hopefully the only thing you will lose is your luggage. 4-12 player
Also, Orbital sounds like Moonbase Alpha.

Space Camp (also nicknamed Moonbase Alpha) is a map that was announced in the Bungie Weekly Update (10/12/07)[1]. It will be available for download on Xbox Live Marketplace in a future DLC release.

It is said to be best for objective games, like CTF and Assault, but also has some natural deadlocks that makes Slayer interesting and Infection "terrifying".

The map is on an "empty UNSC space platform"[2]. This might be an Orbital Defense Platform like Cairo Station from Halo 2. It may be similar to the Halo 2 map Elongation or the Halo: Combat Evolved map Boarding Action.

The map has a "...shrine to Doctors Tobias Fleming Shaw and Wallace Fujikawa", the creators of the Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engine. One part of the map has a deadly chasm, which can be easily traversed once it is "unlocked". This could mean that part of the map is in the vacuum of space. Space Camp has several such locks and "switches to disable and enable access to various parts of the map". This could theoretically mean that it is a remake/spiritual successor of Boarding Action, with some sort of possible switch to a bridge or something of the sort to link the ships. Space Camp has been described as cleanly beautiful, yet haunting and having signs of abrupt abandonment.

with five maps one is guaranteed to suck as much as Relic and Backwash did in Halo 2.

I'm excited to see what Orbital is all about.

Bungie Weekly Update: Rare Thursday Edition

                          Title Update Zwei

Title Update 2 will download when you log in to Halo 3 on September 23rd. Smart alecky types guessed it would be either today (the 18th) or the 23rd as we make a habit of doing our updates on pretty particular days. If you poke around you’ll see that some stuff has changed here on Bungie.net, some of that stuff will flick on when TU2 turns on next week, and some of it is Live now.
For the Stats Whore in All of Us

The Web Devs here at Bungie are rolling out phase one of some significant changes to Bungie.net. The first batch of changes is available now, but the features that they modify are mostly tied to TU2. Throughout the site, you’ll notice a handful of small, courteous notes reminding you that functionality like the Playlist Ratings require actually participating in hoppers that track Playlist Ratings – again, those become operational on Sept. 23.

Signed in users will see the new Achievements that mostly become available when TU goes live. One of the Achievements isn’t available until Sept. 25 (the Anniversary of Halo 3).

Players will notice that their Career Stats page has seen a pretty significant visual facelift. We’ve brought Ranked and Social stats onto the same page and allowed players to sort which stat they’d like to see first. The Gold Bars represent Ranked stats and the Purpley-blue (I’m colorblind) colored bars represent Social stats. Regardless of which preference you’re sorting by (Ranked on top, or Social on top), your medal chest sorting will mirror that preference.

This change to the Career Stats page does a number of things. First, it unifies looking at a player’s stats, with users being able to easily tell what kind of player someone is. Do they mostly play Ranked? Social? Do they only use the BR in Social and exclusively use the Plasma Pistol in Ranked play like Shishka? That data is now digested very easily and quickly.

The second reason we wanted to get all of the stats onto a single page was for a new feature the Bungie.net team implemented: Player Comparisons. As the name suggests, this allows you to enter another player’s gamertag into the window and we’ll spit out a side by side comparison of the two players using the new stats view.

In addition to introducing Player Ratings, remember that on September 23rd, the long-awaited September Playlists will become live.

                            EDGE: Teaching Halo to Think

And Theater mode lays all that bare. Were you concerned when the decision was made to include it?

Actually, no, because Halo has always pulled less smoke and mirrors than a lot of other games. We’ve always been principled about the lifecycle of an AI; the fact that the guy spawns and lives his life, even if players don’t usually see it. Theater mode was actually welcome because you can now watch an AI until its death, and see that the decisions it makes are clear. I really enjoy playing through a level and watching it from the Covenant point of view to see how they react.
The Call Of Duty series is great at creating drama and has enjoyed big sales success, but it doesn’t feature AI on the level of Halo’s – what does that mean for your work?

I think Bungie has always been an engineering-strong company, and our AI is part of that. One thing that we haven’t focused on quite as much as other companies is that presentation and scripting aspect. We’re super, super proud of the depth of simulation in the Halo world, but we realise that we need to invest as heavily in our scripting technology and other presentation. Halo 3 does storytelling through interaction such as the battle with the Scarab, though. I don’t think Call Of Duty has made us rethink anything in particular but I think COD4 is a fantastic game. They do an excellent job of scripting those moments in a way that a player can always see them. That’s something that we can always learn from, because we’ve always had instances of players never seeing certain things at all.
What’s the next step for the AI technology you’re working on?

That it can play more roles and interact more deeply with the player. What that means is making it more social – that is, engage in more structured interaction in the way that AI riding in the Warthog is structured. There was the well-known example in Halo 2 where your ’hog full of marines would just drive off if you got out. That’s actually not that easy a problem to solve because how does the game know you intend to come back?

My grand thesis is, what if you can say: “Wait for me”? Communication with AI has been sorely neglected; you can ask them to charge, retreat, go there, but what about a richer level of communication than just orders? Even just a ‘You’re doing it wrong’ button – literally. If we had it in Halo, a lot of problems would be solved. At the moment we have to just guess the players’ intentions based on very simple input – what are they looking how and for how long and where they’re moving. That kind of stuff is such an impoverished representation. Imagine if you had this ‘You’re doing it wrong’ button…
