Re: Dead Space (360/PS3)
Well I went and grabbed it, so maybe I'll post some impressions later, if anyone cares.
Went to Gamestop, and the guy told me it was the last 360 copy. Said he was going to buy it and said "oh well".
I just shrugged, thinking "then why didn't you pre-order it, like you douchebags are always pressuring us to do?"Comment

Re: Dead Space (360/PS3)
I'll just post what I posted elsewhere:
Wow, this game is absolutely amazing. This might be one of those few "must buy" type games.
The combat really does feel a bit different from most FPS games. You can just go shooting around, hoping to kill enemies - but there is more to it. You can shoot off any limb, and they die much quicker (including the head), and you can even tear them in half. What's cool is that sometimes they'll die, and sometimes they won't. I killed one thing by shooting its head off, but the next one I did that too, it laid there for a second - and then it started blindly crawling at me, swinging and flailing about until I stomped it out for good.
I've also had a few play dead already, and it's cool. I shot off an arm, and thought it was done... And slowly walked up to it, only to have to screech and jump up at me swinging. They also appear to be able to grab on to you, and really do major damage. It then because a tap fest where you just hit a button as quickly as you can until you throw it off. One took off half my energy from doing this.
It also takes some RPG elements in that you have to upgrade your weapons and armor. Armor appears to be as simple as purchasing it (I got to a store, and you basically just buy the second set of armor), but weapons are more complicated. You collect these things as you explore, and you can use them to fill these slots in the gun. There are basically 4 stats - Power, Reload, Capacity, and I think Speed (rate of fire - but I can't quite remember now). There's a grid when you get to an upgrade machine, that is sort of like a tree - and you fill in slots with these things you picked up, and they upgrade one of those things. However, it's not just a straight tree, there are blank slots, and they lead to different branches, which have different upgrades, so you kind of have to decide which route you're going to take - it's not just as simple as choosing fire power. You've got to kind of plan out how you want the weapon to function, and follow that grid.
Here, I found a video that shows it: http://www.gametrailers.com/player/u...es/273849.html and explains it pretty well. The tree for the original weapons (plasma cutter, I think) is more branched out that the one they show, but it gives you the idea.
You also have an inventory, and you can't just carry everything you find. Your suit determines how many inventory slots you have; purchasing the 2nd level suit game me something like 3 extra slots. Seems some things stack, and some don't - like health packs didn't, but ammo did to certain numbers (25 for plasma). When you get to store, there's also a safe - where you can transfer items that you want to keep, but don't think you'll be needing right away. Which is cool - I can't think of it, but it's kind of like another game where you store items in a container, and you can run into that container later on and your items will all be in it... I think maybe Resident Evil 2.
The way they work the HUD/GUI into the game is awesome, too. Your health is displayed as lights on your suit, and your ammo is displayed in a holographic image coming out of your weapon when it's raised. That's it - there's literally nothing on the screen but you and the environment - no icons in corners or anything.
Also, when you go into the menus - they're displayed as holograms that you can actually pivot around. Like when a video comes up, you can actually pivot around, and watch it from behind, and the image will be reversed. It's really, really cool. And it doesn't stop the game play, so there's no pausing for health, and then coming back. You've got to be quick to act while you're save, or be fast in combat.
The graphics are absolutely stunning, too - maybe one of the best looking games I've ever played.
The gameplay itself is also really fun, and really simple. There doesn't appear to be ducking or jumping - and there's no real cover system like say GoW. So it seems to be (at this point) mostly open area combat. Enemies come, and you mow them down, no ducking for cover or jumping around. You just shoot and avoid.
There are also some special powers that I can't remember the name of. I picked one up pretty quick that allows me to slow down time, and it's really cool too. It's basically like shooting, you aim and hit a button. I hear there's one that with telekinesis that lets you pick up items and hurl them around - maybe like the gravity gun in Half-Life 2, but without a gun.
I should also mention that it's a save-point game. There's no pausing and saving. Like everything else done in the game, you find stations, and it brings up a holographic save point. There are a lot around in the first level so far, so saving shouldn't be an issue.
Anyway - this game is stunning so far.Comment

Re: Dead Space (360/PS3)
Picked up the 360 version. According to someone who posted elsewhere IGN insider compares the games and said they are identical.
Visually the game is looks very good. I haven't noticed any pop in or delayed textures loading. Smoke and flame effects are very good. I'm only in chapter one, so far the game has a slight bioshock feel to it. As I progress I'll see whether the story develops more depth. There is upgrading elements to the suit and weapons. The shoot mechanics are very good and the stasis power comes in handy when the necromorphs become overwhelming..
It's a good game so far.Last edited by whosgotcha; 10-15-2008, 04:34 PM.Comment
