Re: Call of Duty 5 confirmed

    COD 5 already playable?

    Read ahead for disappointment.

Sources tell us that the upcoming Call of Duty 5 game in development is already playable, and currently going through quality assurance.

Treyarch is also said to be the developer, and the title, we're told, is set in a WWII Pacific environment and will be using Call of Duty 4's engine, the same engine on which the upcoming James Bond: Quantum of Solace movie game is being built.

Yesterday, on the company's call to investors, Activision publishing CEO Mike Griffith said CoD5 would be coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC and DS, in addition to a return for the franchise to PS2 and Wii for the first time in two years.

Why disappointment? At least they moved out of Europe. COD3 was made in 9 months. COD5 will be over 2x that, so hopefully that helps.

Because it is going back to WWII after a modern time game. It doesn't matter if they put it on the moon, it is still WWII with WWII weapons.

I'll still take a look at it but I'll be playing COD 4 online.

I agree with you... COD4 weapons are SO cool... WWII weapons... LAME.

I guess I don't understand the thought process of the naysayers. I do not want Treyarch to touch anything Infinity Ward does (Modern time). Also with that, if Infinity Ward was the only one touching the COD franchise, they would still be on the same developmental cycle and we, as consumers, would get one less COD game (the Treyarch COD). And I am not a huge fan of COD 3, but it wasn't terrible, and now they will be using the same COD 4 engine for the WWII Pacific theater, which has only been touched by MOH Rising Sun and it has promise. I hope COD 7 is in Vietnam, as Men of Valor was one of the most underrated online experiences on the XBOX.

And a new Bond game using the Unreal/COD engine, wow....

IMO, I think the WWII genre has been beaten to death by just about every major developer. COD4 did so much to elevate the standard of FPS, that everyone would be in line midnight for a repeat of the modern warfare with additional guns, tactics etc.

I could only see a WWII game being done by Treyarch being sucessful if they manage to somehow incorporate vehicles and big time destructible environments -

I agree. The last WWII game I really enjoyed was Battlefield 1942. I think I've stormed every virtual beach and shot every M1 rifle and BAR that's ever existed.

yes, but that will have to be out by the time the movie is. That's partially why EA lost the license in the first place.

Treyarch wasn't that great with CoD3 to begin with, but now they have two high profile games coming out this fall. In addition, CoD5 will be on next gen, last gen, and handheld. Sounds like Treyarch got slapped with the "make any game fast for cash" label.

There's a reason why the flood of WWII games has dried up. Regardless of an awesome new pacific set WWII game, The CoD franchise was taken to a new level by IW and modern combat. Taking it back to WWII is a sad step back. They aren't even trying to improve on anything. Just slap WWII on the CoD4 engine and hope people don't care.

I'm surprised nobody has really done anything with Vietnam, but I guess since we didn't "win" that war, its not as much fun?

Anyway, I thought Medal of Honor already did a Pacific theatre game?

There was a wave of Vietnam XBOX games and only Men of Valor was playable and that had great multiplayer. MOH did Pacific in Rising Sun, but it was super rushed and buggy.

Yeah, Avietnam game would be cool. The firefights in the jungle would be fantastic.

Awesome, COD 5! I like the vietnam war idea that has been thrown around on here.

well even the WWII games are done to highlight key battles. WWII has much more historical value and content to use, and even that's drying up. The Pacific theater has tons of great battles to choose from, but you wonder why even do it when the franchise has soared to new levels once they decided to move on from that. Surely they could have scripted a new unique modern combat game and just had Treyarch code it.

As for Vietnam, it's not just that "we didn't win", but that there's just not much potential as a game, where people like to reach an end. It's one thing to be a part of D-Day in a WWII game, as we know what resulted from that. It's another thing to play the Tet Offensive, or napalming villages of civilians.

Activition was brilliant with the strategy regarding COD releases. COD3 was a stop gap between COD2 and COD4. COD3 generated revenue while Infinity Ward was developing COD4.
Honestly, I would love to see Axis-based sections of the game. As a wargamer, I'm more than used to using German and Japanese combat units in tactical games- I'm not sure why it suddenly becomes such a no-no once you enter videogame land.
