Call of Duty: World at War

The first details of Call of Duty: World at War have been revealed, plucked straight from the pages of Xbox 360: The Official Magazine (#35), which is dropping through subscribers' letterboxes right now.

The fifth game in the CoD series, which is being developed by CoD3 studio Treyarch, ditches the number subtitle and expectedly returns to WWII - but the developer stresses it's not the same theatre we've seen a million times before.

It all takes place in the Pacific theatre (and partially in Russia's advance into Berlin) says OXM, which all in all was a much grittier and darker conflict that the one in muddy Belgium fields.

Treyarch has had a full extra year over CoD3's development to make World at War - and it's using the excellent CoD4 engine, which is plenty of reason to be excited.

"This is a scarier Call of Duty than we've ever seen," Treyarch head Mark Lamir says in the mag.

To help simulate the Japanese's different style of warfare, Treyarch has completely re-tinkered the enemy AI in World at War. Instead of taking cover and flanking in traditional European battle strategies, the Japanese hide in trees, sneak through the overgrowth and scrabble, katana in hand in violent suicide attacks.

"We figured out early that the Imperial Japanese fought in a different way that was full of suspense," creative lead Rich Farrelly tells OXM. "From that point we started to skew the game in that direction."

Excitingly, for the first time in Call of Duty's campaign 4-player co-op is supported over Xbox Live - and it supports meta game perks as in CoD4's excellent online mode.

Re: Call of Duty 5 confirmed

The next installment of Cll of Duty, set in World War II and being developed by Treyarch.
      Developer: Treyarch
      Publisher: Activision
      Players: 1-2
      Online (Co-Op): 2-4
      Online Multiplayer: 2-16
Call of Duty: World at War will utilise the Call of Duty 4 engine but the developer has also added various enhancments, such as the ability the burn down buildings and foliage. The game takes place primarily in the pacific, with the US forces fighting Imperial Japan. Frank Kearsy, military advisor and Gulf War Veteran, has made sure that the way the Japanse fight is both tenacious and shocking.
You’ll also be fighting as the Russians, who are invading Germany. With the Nazi forces on the back foot they will start fighting even more ferociously in an attempt to defend their strongholds such as in Berlin. There is also a new party system that will allow the leader to issue commands to his troops in single player.
Mutliplayer perks are also back, including some of the favorites from Call of Duty 4, but there will also be new ones that better suit the time period. The game also features new weapons for the series, such as the flamethrower, which according to OXM, can melt the skin off of your enemies and set ablaze grass and wooden buildings. You are also able to shoot throw materials depending on the strength of the material.
Treyarch is promising that this new installment of Call of Duty will be the darkest one yet and are dedicated to making the best game they can. They have had two years of development time, rather than the 11 months they had for Call of Duty 3. And this time they have specific teams working on all the different versions, with the Xbox 360 version acting as the lead.

I like the 2-4 player co-op, a first for COD. And the extra development time should give us a better game than COD3.

I don't like the way the game is sounding. Why go back to the WWII thing again?

At least they are moving into the Pacific.
If Treyarch did Modern Warfare it would almost certainly fall short of COD4.

At least they didn't do Civil War.

I'll take a look at this but I doubt I'll spend half the time I did with COD 4.

Why does it have to be centered around some old war? There's plenty of things you can do with the modern warfare angle.

                          The European field is, yes.

The fact that it is taking place in the Pacific - which is truly a COMPLETELY different war than WWII was in Europe - has me excited. If they can get the Japanese AI down, this game could be amazing.

                          The Co-Op doesn't hurt, either.

Couldn't be more played out. Wow. It's also alarming that Infinity Ward isn't doing it. I wonder if they'll be acquired by Ubisoft, who are looking to absorb more dev houses.

I thought it was pretty well known that Treyarch and IW switched off every other rendition of the game?

I'm all for Treyarch doing the past (WWII, etc.) kind of games, while IW focuses on the modern angles.

When I was watching the documentary about Infinity Ward, it didn't seem like they switched off, so much as it was that IW didn't want to do another WWII game, so Activision got someone else to do it.
