Now Halo 3: ODST
If you recall, this is our recently announced stand-alone extension to Halo 3 that features an all new campaign played from the perspective of an ODST in the heart of a Covenant occupied New Mombasa. In addition to sleuthing around the city and piecing together the details surrounding your squad's whereabouts, the game will also include some new Halo 3 multiplayer content as well as one or two unrevealed surprises when it's released next Fall.
This new title is a more straightforward account of the experience that awaits and the role you will assume as you explore the streets of New Mombasa. But don't worry, you can still has Recon. (the armor that is, it's still tied to the Vidmaster achievements and will be accessible via the final retail release next Fall).
"ODST" (literally pronounced "Oh-Dee-Ess-Tee" and not "ohdst") is the acronym for "Orbital Drop Shock Trooper." This special forces branch of the UNSC military force is called into action for highly specialized, small scale operations. ODST units were deployed during portions of the Halo 2 and Halo 3 campaign and have also been featured in some of the Halo novels. To learn more about this elite military operation, check out this recent interview with Bungie's Halo fiction guru, Robt McLees.

One other thing that is "similar but different" in Halo 3: ODST is the M7 Submachine Gun. You first held this bullet hose in your hot little hand back in the glory days of Halo 2, where you quickly learned that a single SMG on its own probably wasn’t the best implement of war you could bring with you onto the online battlefield. It was always much more effective when wielded in matching pairs or complemented with plasma in the other hand. In the Halo 3 multiplayer space, The SMG occupies a similar position in the overall sandbox - though many of its shortcomings as a starting weapon were addressed by way of the Return of the Assault Rifle (BR aficionados, start your foruming).
But even the least astute observers among us should have noted that the SMG showcased both in the Official Halo 3: ODST trailer, and in the recent crop of delicious concept art, has been augmented with a sweet, sultry silencer. It’s also been retooled in a few other significant ways. It’s still a bullet hose, no doubt about it, but let’s just say the nozzle's been turned just a touch to narrow the stream.
That little piece of kit latched on top of the receiver assembly isn't for show, it's a Reflex Sight to facilitate increased accuracy. And just below the barrel you may notice there's a housing for the smart-linked scope that allows an ODST to get an even better look at his targets while squeezing the trigger. That doesn't mean the custom SMG operates as a Battle Rifle clone - it's still most effective in CQB scenarios, doing its dirty work up close and personal, but it is much more effective at midrange than ever before. Strange to think of a Halo game as an unhyped, unheralded underdog. More than strange - unthinkable - for its announcement to be leaked, postponed, teased out, fumbled and eventually made to a Tokyo Game Show audience that didn't particularly care. Once the victor, with ODST Halo finds itself the victim: of an awkward name change, of an unfortunate child-abduction gaffe, of franchise fatigue, of dampened expectations, and mostly of an undignified divorce spat between Microsoft and Bungie. But forget all that.
Yes, it's only a brisk three to five hours' entertainment, not counting the new multiplayer maps. That didn't stop Portal topping game of the year lists, including ours. Surely, in 2009, we no longer measure quality by the yard. It's not the contraction in length that interests us, but the contraction in scale.
Halo has always been the ultimate in sci-fi bombast, the epic tale of an invincible superhero and insurmountable odds against the backdrop of a raging interplanetary war. ODST is a side-story, a vignette about a future paratrooper picking cautiously through the rubble of a ruined city after the Covenant leave Earth, looking for his lost comrades. Part shooter, part mystery, the tone of the narrative and the gameplay are necessarily going to be worlds away.
Expect open-world map design, storytelling through playable flashbacks of multiple characters, player-defined waypoints, and even a little light detective work. Oh, and the great Nathan Fillion in the voice cast. Bungie's outrageous talent with muscular, unpredictable combat can be relied on, but this is the super-developer stepping quietly - almost surreptitiously - into new territory for the first time in eight years. That automatically makes Halo 3 ODST the most intriguing and exciting prospect in the shooter genre this year.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

How does the Rookie's silenced SMG work from a gameplay perspective? Is there a stealth mechanic in Halo 3: ODST?
The silenced SMG is just one of the tweaks to the Halo 3 sandbox that make ODST a stealthier experience -- one that, at least in the open environment of nighttime New Mombasa, rewards a more measured approach to combat. As a non-Spartan, you'll need to be careful about the fights you pick, especially when you're on your own. Luckily the silenced SMG excels at dropping unwary, unshielded enemies.
Are you planning to include any other new weapons, or modifications to existing weapons?
Because ODST leverages the Halo 3 sandbox, there will be a lot of returning weapon favorites. But given the game's position on the Halo timeline, we're also bringing back...Well, on second thought, I'd ruin a lot of the game's fun if I got too specific. So let me just say that we're absolutely expanding the sandbox in critical areas.
Compared to their appearances in Halo 3, the Brutes in Halo 3: ODST look more vicious and evil. Have they received any new behaviors or combat tactics?
Paul Bertone, ODST's design director, has conceived a new "cover first" tactic for the Brutes that makes them even more interesting to fight. And when I say "interesting" I mean downright nasty. Brutes in ODST are much more interested in self-preservation than they were in Halo 3 which makes for terrific, multi-layered encounters. They'll lure you into traps, gang up on you - generally make you wish you'd hit them in the flanks instead of hard-charging, Spartan-style.
How does the Rookie's high-tech visor work? And what are those pretty colors and highlights we saw in the teaser trailer?
We're still tweaking the visuals, but it's basically a low-light vision enhancement and target acquisition mode. It's most basic function is to highlight enemies in red and allies in green, but it's also extremely helpful for navigation. Objects of interest -- the "clues" that advance the story -- also get special vision-mode treatment.
The open-world element in Halo 3: ODST is an interesting addition. Will players be able to choose which of the four beacons they explore first? Can you explore them in any order you like?
Again, I don't want to ruin any surprises, but I can clarify a misstatement in [a recent Game Informer] article. There are actually more than four beacons, and once you find the first one you're pretty much free to roam the dark, Covenant-patrolled streets of New Mombasa however you like - free to find the remaining clue beacons in any order you choose.
When playing Halo 3: ODST, how does the feel of the game differ from playing as a supersoldier such as Master Chief?
A lot more tactical, which is to say you need to think before you engage -- decide how you want to take apart an encounter before diving in or you'll get into trouble pretty quick, especially on higher difficulty levels. Unlike a Spartan, an ODST doesn't have shields. You're a little slower too, so if you get hit you can't just run sprint to safety. The golden rule of ODST combat is "look before you leap."
Will Halo 3: ODST include any new multiplayer maps or online features? And will the multiplayer game feature the traditional Spartans, or playable ODST characters?
Halo 3: ODST will include a variety of new multiplayer maps that apply to Halo 3. Some of these maps are actually part of the Mythic Map Pack that will initially be released on Xbox LIVE Marketplace early next year. This multiplayer content is "Halo 3" in nature, meaning you will not be playing Slayer, CTF or other traditional favorites as anything other than a Spartan or Elite.
In addition, the core ODST campaign can still be experienced cooperatively with up to four players, including saved films, screenshots, campaign scoring and all the great functionality Halo fans have come to enjoy. Beyond that, we're keeping mum on any other multiplayer components of Halo 3: ODST.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment

Aside from the new ODST campaign that can be played cooperatively with up to three friends, players will also get the entire Halo 3 multiplayer experience plus some additional bonuses on the disc. This means that you will be able to play online as either Spartans or Elites, still no ODSTs, using all of the maps and weapons from Halo 3. The Forge will also be included, allowing for the same customization options found in the original title. In addition, Halo 3: ODST will come with a host of extra maps that will also be made available separately throughout the year as parts of two different downloadable map packs, the first of which being the soon to be released Mythic Map Pack.

am I the only one who was hoping Halo 3: ODST would have it's own multiplayer element unique to that game?
I mean if it's just a means to play Halo 3, a game I already own, online then what's the point in paying for this 5-hour max add-on? No way I'm paying more than $30 for this and even then I would say it should be 20. Similar content was made for Mass Effect and moved as DLC, I'm guessing for 1200 or 1600 points. Sorry I'm a noob on this, but has there been any mention about compatibility? If they include all the 'Halo 3' multiplayer stuff witt this title, if I pop in the 'Halo 3' disc will I be able to play with these folks? Or is it completely separate?
That's my concern. I'd pay $40 or so to keep the multiplayer going if it's not backwards compatible, since most die-hard Halo fans will buy this game. If it IS compatible...**** it!I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be. - Douglas Adams

Lets wait for more details, because not everything has been revealed. We already knew it wasn't going to have it's own multiplayer component and instead would include muliplayer maps for Halo 3 and "other surprises" to further enhance and add to the experience, play time, and replayability of the final package. As far as length it's already been clarified. The campaign has two components: The Hub World and Beacons (missions). The "3-5 hour campaign experience" was only factoring in one of those components and it was said on a recent Bungie podcast that you could expect a similar length to Halo 3.
Price is going to be interesting though. Bungie doesn't look at as being a full priced game, but it's ultimately Microsoft's call.Go Noles!!! >>----->Comment
