Just read a nice article(QUITE LONG! ) in PC Gamer about this game.
This one is going to be phenomenal.....no doubt.
The naval battles look unbelievable......very good balanced gameplay.
    Good stuff all around.

I am very excited for this game! I've been with the series since Shogun. I don't think there is a better total series than this. Civ comes close, but actually fighting the battles is what does it for me. I am really looking forward to land battles with gunpowder. It is nice after hearing about the inclusion (and ultimate exclusion) of naval battles from Rome and Medieval II make it in this time.

I hope the empires don't start out too big. I like to start small and build my way up.

Way more than Risk. There's the tabletop type game where you try and take over the world, but there's diplomacy, making money, upgrading cities, making armies, ships, etc. Then when you actually try and take a city you have to siege it (break through the walls, kill the militia). If you're fighting a army in the field it's like Braveheart. You manage all the divisions, men on horse, pikemen, etc and direct the battle, tell them how to fight, charge, etc.

I'm sure other guys can explain better than I am, but it's a damn deep game.

It's Risk on steroids. I had about an 8 hour session yesterday on Medieval Total War 2. It's one of my favorite PC games ever.

You basically take over a country. You are in charge of how to build up your settlements, which are either castles or cities. The only thing you need to worry about is money which is gained via trading and taxes.

Then there is the diplomacy section where you can form alliances, trade partners, marry off princes/princesses, give military help, etc.

Finally the on the field battles which can range from grass fields to mountains to triple wall castles. You controls hundreds of men which fight based on morale, leadership, fatigue, terrain, weapons, and armor.

I can actually play though a whole game (which takes months) and only fight one or two on screen battles because the campaign mode is so deep. There is so much more I left out...spies, assassins, clergy, heretics, plagues, naval invasions, and on and on.

Definitely, grab either Rome or Medieval 2 depending what time period you like better and get started. The Total War games are fantastic!

Or...if you were an avid tabletop wargamer like myself, it's all of the excitement of a tabletop miniatures game, minus the hours upon hours of painting 15mm Prussians.

True. I like to paint. But it can be a pain. Sometimes painting is more fun than playing.

I enjoy painting as well, but when you paint the entirety of Yorck's Prussian Corps it can be tedious.

Units such as the Lieb Hussars aka the "Death Heads" are fun to paint.

Prussian Landwehr...not so much. Especially when you are using a 30 to 1 ratio.

Army painting sucks. But painting a single piece that you like just for the piece is very relaxing and rewarding. Anything else is more work.

Auburn have you ever played Fields of Glory? that was my first wargame for the PC that involved the Napoleonic wars...Prussians, French, and Brits...

absolute blast from what i remember

I also enjoyed Sid Meyers Gettysburg...pretty soon we should be seeing the Total War series venture the civil war..well im hoping anyway since Total War goes for a more global scale...

                                Played both and enjoyed both.

And yes...when Total War goes to the American Civil War (From all indications...that is the next installment!!) I'll probably become a hermit and lose all contact with the outside world.
