    Demon's Souls (PS3)

    1UP

In this week's issue of Weekly Famitsu magazine, Sony Computer Entertainment made the first announcement of Demon's Souls, a new "dark fantasy" action RPG under development by Armored Core makers From Software. The game, which will be playable at the Tokyo Game Show next week, is due out for the PlayStation 3 next year in Japan.

While details are still scant on Demon's Soul, SCE Japan producer Takeshi Kajii described the game to Famitsu as a spiritual successor to King's Field, the From-developed first-person RPG that first hit it big on the original PlayStation. "I am a fan of From Software, but naturally that also means there are parts of their games I'm not satisfied with, too," he said. "If this was a new King's Field game, there would be areas we wouldn't be able to touch since they're part of the series; working together like this, we can try to make something really new."

Demon's Souls takes place in the kingdom of Boletaria, currently enshrouded in a deep fog thanks to its king inadvertently unleashing an ancient monster from his slumber. You, a nameless hero who you're free to customize Elder Scrolls-style, must penetrate into Boletaria and save the kingdom -- but like many US RPGs these days, the game is slated to be extremely open-ended. "You get only the barest minimum of a goal, and there's nothing forcing you to do anything in the game," Kajii said. "People say to you 'Save the world,' but you can ignore them and keep going if you like."

The way Kajii and From Software director Hidetaka Miyazaki described it, Demon's Souls is a bit of a hybrid -- an RPG that uses the PS3's hardware to the hilt while still retaining the challenge and exploration of traditional role-players. Your hero can use a wide variety of weapons, each of which has different attacks and animations depending on how skillful you are or whether you're using one hand or two, and the game's physics system places natural limits on what's possible in any given tactical situation. "We gave a lot of thought to how to make the fun and charms of a classic RPG interesting all over again with the latest technology at hand," Miyazaki noted. "We figured that doing the things that previous hardware ignored -- having long weapons bump into walls, lighting the area in realtime with the torch in your hand -- would make the game that much more fun. We're taking the things you did through menus in Wizardry and letting you carry them out in real life." (Miyazaki also hinted that while Demon's Souls won't have multiplayer, he would still like to "find a way to use the Internet to make the single-player mode more interesting.")

Sounds interesting. I'd like an alternative to Oblivion on the PS3.

"From Software's exclusive PS3 role-playing-game Demon's Souls isn't exactly getting stellar reviews. It doesn't matter. The game is flying off selected Japanese store shelves.

According to these photos, the game has sold out at both Yodobashi Cameras in Shinjuku, Bic Camera in Shinjuku, a Sofmap (dunno where!) and a TSUTAYA (ditto!).

The game went on sale February 5th, and some retailers don't think they'll be getting in another shipment until today or tomorrow."

Atlus Brings PlayStation 3's Demon's Souls Stateside

From Software's Demon's Souls is heading West, with Japanese role-playing game specialists Atlus picking up the slack for North American PlayStation 3 publishing duties. The action RPG, already released in Japan, will arrive this Fall.

The "ultimate hardcore RPG challenge" will pit up to three players against a horde of demons online, with cooperative, player versus player and single-player modes, adding open ended variety to the Demon's Souls experience.

The PlayStation 3 RPG, an unofficially described spiritual successor to the King's Field franchise, will offer a handful of player classes to choose from, with character customization and progression making for a "free-form and flexible" game structure.

Atlus points out Demon's Souls key features for prospective buyers. And they are...
          • Ultimate hardcore RPG challenge — In this brutal land, death is inevitable, but not final. Combining the best features of an action game and RPG, you'll slice, smash, shoot, and ensorcel some of the most horrible, vicious enemies ever encountered. Are you strong enough to face the impossible and win?
          • Groundbreaking online capabilities — Network features go far beyond any previous RPG, allowing players to leave hints for each other, replay death scenes, cooperatively revive dead players, or invade another player's game to wreak havoc. Not merely an add-on feature, multiplayer options are vast, and uniquely focused on changing and intensifying the single player experience.
          • Freeform and flexible — The open-ended structure of the game means that there is no single path, but rather a wealth of options. Set your own pace and progress as you like. Build exactly the character you want by creating a detailed avatar, nurturing the right stats, and customizing your skills and equipment.
          • You act, the world reacts — The World Tendency system changes the aggressiveness of monsters and the rewards for killing them based on players' actions. Different events and NPCs may be triggered, as well.

Demon’s Souls set for October 6 in US, Deluxe Edition announced

Atlus U.S.A., Inc. today revealed that Demon’s Souls™, a groundbreaking action RPG experience for PLAYSTATION®3 system, is to become the newest entry in the Atlus Spoils fan appreciation program. In addition to the standard version of the game, which now features new North-American exclusive box art, there will also be a deluxe edition. For less than it costs to import the game, fans will receive a 150+ page strategy guide (only available as part of this deluxe version, not for sale anywhere else) and a collectible outer slipcase, in addition to the game itself.

Moreover, fans who pre-order either version will receive a free bonus art book with designs and concept sketches from the world of Demon’s Souls (only at participating retailers, while supplies last).

“Atlus Spoils is all about giving back to our fans and thanking them for their support, and we’re excited to be able to do something very special for Demon’s Souls,” stated Tim Pivnicny, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Atlus. “On October 6th, PLAYSTATION 3 system owners will be treated to the definitive release of what many consider to be the most innovative action RPG in recent memory. With both the standard and deluxe versions of the game accompanied by irresistible North American exclusives, like a special pre-order bonus art book, we hope this is an offer patient Demon’s Souls fans will be hard-pressed to resist.”

Demon’s Souls for PLAYSTATION 3 system is scheduled for North American release on October 6, 2009. The standard version will retail with an MSRP of $59.99, and the deluxe edition with an MSRP of $69.99. Pre-orders for the deluxe edition are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, July 8th.

                          1UP Hands-on

Demon's Souls, as best I can tell, is what would happen if Diablo was designed by a sadistic Japanese genius.

I've been playing it off-and-on for the past few days in an attempt to understand what the heck is going on. But even after watching an Atlus employee play through dungeon 1-2 (this numbering system isn't official, but it's what the rabid fan community of import players is using to describe the dungeons) and the Tower Knight boss battle at the end, I'm still unclear on a fair bit of Demon's Souls' core concepts.

Basically, Demon's Souls is a fancy PS3 spiritual heir to the King's Field dungeon crawler series. But to me, even though I recognize titles like Wizardry and King's Field as the old-school dungeon crawler, my reference for games about going down into a dungeon to beat the crap and money out of monsters, and then spend that money to make myself cooler in order to beat even more money out of the monsters, is Diablo. And while Demon's Souls doesn't feature Diablo's randomly-generated dungeons, it does feature a central hub (with a blacksmith no less!), lots of fast-paced-yet-deep combat (for example, the game actually detects collisions between weapons and the environment -- so a spear that you thrust forward might be more effective in tight spaces than a two-handed axe that gets stuck in walls), multiplayer hooks, and all sorts of loot. It also features some of the quirkiest perspectives on traditional action-RPGs.

First off, there's the death penalty. You're forced to perform a corpse run after death; that's pretty normal. In fact, the only thing you lose is "souls" (the currency for the game) -- you still maintain your stats and items. That sounds peachy. But here's where it gets a bit different: everything respawns for your second run-through. Essentially, the dungeon and its inhabitants is completely reset to the way it was when you started, so not only do you have to make your way back to where you died, but you have to fight everyone all over again. Another wrinkle: your health is reduced to half. This doesn't mean you just start off with half health and need to heal up; until you retrieve your corpse, your health cannot be higher than half its previous maximum. And on top of that, if you die during your corpse run (while you won't have your health halved again) you do miss out on all the souls that were lost from the first death. You're going to hate yourself if you die in the middle of a one-hit-kill area, and you accidentally fall victim to the same thing that killed you the first time on your way to your corpse.

But not quite everything is equally sadistic. Some parts of Demon's Souls are just plain zany, like its messaging system. Anywhere you go, you can compose a message using a menu of pre-selected phrases, and drop said message at your feet. You often run into clusters of messages -- some with helpful advice like, "Beware of attack," or "You will get an item after this!" to puzzling ones like, "Cute enemy!" to the ones asking for a handout with, "This is harsh, please evaluate me." Yes, you can "rate" messages, and adding a positive point to the message not only increases its rating when read (so you can see if a lot of people consider something helpful by virtue of how many ratings it has), but it also instantly heals the person who left the message. There's been quite a few times where I think I'm going to die, and then I get a notification that someone liked a message I left, and boom, I'm healed and back in the fight.

I'm a bit sad that you can't "negatively" rate a message (at least, so far in my experience) -- you can only add points. Some messages aren't particularly illuminating and not worth rating, but those will carry the same "zero rating" as a message that says, "Attack! You're safe here!" but then results in a trap killing you. Similar to messages are bloodstains, which project a ghost version of the bloodstain owner's last few seconds of gameplay before dying -- these serve as odd, but decent, ways to see what might be coming up next.

As goofy as the messaging system is, it doesn't quite compare to how different the multiplayer aspects can get. You can party up with three other players to take on monsters -- that's normal. But you can't actually talk or communicate with each other; you have emotes and that's it. It's not an ideal decision, but it's one that you can work around; instead of babbling about how awesome your day was, you and your fellow warriors can just focus on killing things.

That's the expected cooperative aspect, but the competitive aspect is just devious by comparison. Remember how you have to do a corpse run upon death? That's the normal way to recover your health and loot. The devious way is to crash into someone else's game and kill them. Yes, by making the hunting and killing of other players a method of healing yourself, the developers have created institutionalized griefing. I'm still not sure whether I should be annoyed or applauding.

There's a fair bit of Demon's Souls left for me to discover, like what "world tendency" means, and more of the epic Monster Hunter-style boss battles (I've only finished the first boss fight, and watched an Atlus employee finish the second one). But despite the harsh death penalty (where I've lost thousands upon thousands of Souls multiple times), and its bizarre take on multiplayer, I do find myself grinding monsters and repeating dungeons over and over again. It's just so different, and it appeals to my simple "kill, loot, improve, and kill" mentality.

While it's still relatively easy to import, I recommend waiting for Atlus' "official" State-side release. Besides the cleaned-up localization, Atlus is also bundling a nifty slip-cover, and a much-needed strategy guide. I normally don't care about strategy guides, but having a hefty 150-page one for this baffling game is easily worth the additional ten bucks that Atlus is asking.

I imported this a few weeks ago and it is easily the toughest game I have ever played this generation. Any enemy in the game can kill you with a few hits if you are not paying attention. Whoever wants a challenge, look no further than this game.

That said, I am having a blast playing. The graphics are good, the combat is fun, and the game appears to be plenty long. Defintely pick it up if you are a fan of dungeon crawlers/action RPG's.

Great day for me. I got my imported copy of Demon's Souls and Penn State season tickets both delivered in the same day. Played the game for a couple hours when I got home tonight. I'm really enjoying it, it's tough, but I'm enjoying the challenge. Anyone on the fence about the game, go get it. The controls are slightly sluggish, but the gameplay and graphics make up for it. I finally have something other than Viking and COD to hold me over before Batman, Borderlands, and Dragon Age hit the market.
