        Re: ArmA 2 (PC, 360, PS3)

Latest Mission we just did this weekend!!

        Summary
Player leads a US special forces team in a stealth operation to rescue a downed pilot from a Russian held village.

        Intro
The intro offers a very short but decent base for the mission with an atmospheric representation of the event that led to this operation.

        Briefing
The briefing is well written, concise and gives nice background and other necessary information for the mission which makes it almost perfect. The markers do a great job in organizing the tasks ahead and are clear and uncluttered on the map.

There is no option to choose gear and the player has been given no custom identity, which dampens immersion slightly.

        Mission
The players' group is inserted into the area of operation via helo but far enough away from the objective to induce cautious overland foot travel. Bad weather and low visibility, gives a peaceful feeling during the approach, but there can still be some serious trouble to face if concentration is lost.

When the target village is finally in sight, the player will have several infiltration styles to choose from depending on his/her patience and skill levels but sooner or later the hostiles are alarmed and the rest of the mission becomes challenging infantry action which hopefully ends with a nice chopper ride back home.

        Special
There are no unique features offered with the exception of the customized volumetric fog which accentuates the bad weather quite nicely.

The mission requires ACE2 mod to play which adds its own game balance and features to the mission - Including an advanced wounding system and more talkative AI.

        Overall
An atmospheric mission with some nice moments and balanced gameplay but fails to deliver a solid story element that is complimented by cinema and side chats. However, it is successful in offering good, simple, OFP style action though and worth a play.

I have this game as well. I have not played it in a while, but when you get a good group, this is one of the best games that I play.

I don't think so, originally they were making it for PS3 and 360 but I am pretty sure it got canned. I got Arma 2 for PC, had it for a bit but my CPU can't handle it....

It is a hyper-realism military training game so hopefully that interest you. It is not a blockbuster movie type such as Call of Duty.

With that said, I HIGHLY suggest getting ACE 2 mod. It will greatly enhance the game and make the presentation more action "like". It makes the sound effects much better and the effects such as explosions are much more realistic.

Huge fan of the original OFP and I liked Arma 1 for the brief times I've played it. Have yet to touch this thing since it's beyond what my computer can handle. I'm thinking of getting a new computer, almost solely to play games like Arma 2.

Question for you Phobia, I'm assuming you've played the original OFP. If you'll recall the CQC in that game was a joke. From the wonky physics of the buildings to the brain dead AI, etc. How would you rate the AI (enemy and your team) in CQC situations?

BTW, reading your story about the Afghan battle brought back some memories. Sounds awesome. Also seems like the AK-47 snipers that annoyed the f--k out of me are gone.

Installing ACE2 does not seem simple at all. I was hoping it would be a simple download this thing into this directory and then unpack it, install it, then play it. Instead it seems to be install this thing and this and this and this from all these different places. Then you may or may not have to download another thing and worst of all I can't find a simple guide walking me through this or at the least telling me where I'm supposed to put all this crap. Having the game through Steam isn't helping matters either.

Help please if you can. Anyone.

Yea Gez the AK-47 Snipers are no longer. The default game still has some AI issues but not nearly what OFP or ARMA 1 had. Plus with the ACE2 Mod it is way better even with them using tactics and hand signals.

This is a e-mail I wrote to help out my dad to install the mod. It is a perfect walk though. Should be easy for you to follow.

Ok I am going to post all the files for you so it will be real easy for you to install and get it working. This might seem like a long process by looking at everything I am going to write but it is not. I am just going to explain everything real clear so it is easy for you to do this and no be confused. But trust me it is not long, the longest part is downloading the 6 files below. Most are several hundred megs in size.

The most basic way to explain this is that you are downloading and extracting these files into a certain location. Then one other set of files will be extract to a different location, Then you set your ARMA 2 launch options to launch the mods, lastly you launch the game in Combined Operations mode which is ARMA 2 and ARMA Operation Arrowhead together so you can use all content from one screen.

One thing to note you will realize once mod is installed. Game will take a little bit longer to load between missions. It is because the game is loading a bunch of new files such as sounds and such. But it is a very small price to pay, because the pay off of this mod is HUGE. It feels like a whole new game and is VERY intense with the new sound effects.

                          Now onto the steps.

Step 1) Download the following files. They will be in ZIP form so downloading them to your download folder for easy access is easiest.

Scroll all the way down on page and you will see near bottom 2 download FTP links.

                          CAB - http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=6231
                          ACE - http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=12155
                          ACEX - http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=12158
                          ACE SM - http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=12160
                          ACE RU - http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=12161
                          ACE US Navy - http://www.armaholic.com/page.php?id=12159

Once you download all these files. Now you can move one to next step.

Step 2) Extract each of these files to this file path. C:/program files x86/steam/steamapps/common/ARMA2 OperationArrowhead folder

                          Repeating Above step for clarity
There might be 2 program file folders, one is programfiles other is programfiles x86, but you should have the x86 folder. If for some reason you don't have the x86 program file folder, call me. Then go to Steam, then Steam apps, then common, then at this point it will show all your steam game folders. You should have one which is ARMA 2 and then one for ARMA 2 Operation Arrow head. You want to extract all those files you downloaded to the Operation Arrow head main folder.

Once you extract the files. Inside your Arrowhead folder you should now see folders for all the files you just extracted there. They will look like this for each one.
                          • @CAB
                          • @ACE
                          • @ACEX
                          • @ACE_SM
                          • @ACE_RU
                          • @ACE_USNavy

Step 3) Now once all your files are unpacked into your ArrowHead main folder. You are almost done. 2 More quick Steps. Open up your @ACE folder. Now make sure it is the one that says @ACE only. Inside that folder you will have a folder called STORE. Inside the STORE Folder you will have a file called Userconfig.tar . You doubleclick it to extract it, the location you want to extract it to is this.

                          C:/program files x86/steam/steamapps/common/ARMA2 OperationArrowhead/userconfig folder

After you have extract the Userconfig.tar file to the userconfig folder in the main arrowhead folder. You want to open up the userconfig folder to make sure the files are there. Inside the userconfig folder you should have a folder called ACE, then inside the ACE folder you should have 2 .hpp files and maybe one other file like a txt file or something. But the important part is making sure there are 2 .hpp files inside that ACE folder.

Step 4) Alright Last step and you are DONE!!! Open up Steam, go to your game list. Once your game list is pulled up, you will see two games listed for ARMA2. One is ARMA 2 and the other is ARMA2 Operation ArrowHead. Right click the Operation Arrowhead one. Now go to Properties. Then click the button called Launch Options. Then a box will pull up. Copy paste this exactly how I have it into the box. Click ok to close box and you are done!

                          -nosplash -mod=@CBA;@ACE;@ACEX;@ACEX_USNavy;@ACEX_RU;@ACEX_SM

Step 5) To launch the game there is one important step.

ALWAYS from here on out. When you want to play ARMA2, open up steam, go to your game list.
Then click ARMA2 Operation ArrowHead. Then click PLAY. At this point a little box with check box
options will appear. Check the Play Combined Arms check box. Should be last one on bottom.

Then hit play. Game should start, you should see a Grey start screen with a Skull and Swords with
Advanced Combat Environment shown. When you get to main menu you should see all the mods currently
running on the right side of the screen with @ symbols in yellow. If you see all this, then the
Mod is installed correctly and you are good to go!!

                          ENJOY!!!!

Its all good. I'd take a high settings ARMA to the stutter-fest that my pc displayed with ARMA 2.

By the way, I've searched all over but is there some sort of FAQ or Stratery guide for ARMA 1? I'm currently stuck on this mission where we are to take out the enemies AA stations and then secure a bridge. I get to the bridge where it tells me to wait for my next orders and I get shot over and over again. I had a nice 9 man group but has been withered away to just 4 of us. What makes it bad is right on my last save, my #2 gets shot and goes down every time. So it ends up with me commanding just 3 studs.

Despite the intense difficulty, I've never felt so much satisfaction than when completing a mission in this game.

Hey I got arma 2 and the expansion on steam a while back. The expansion slows the game to a crawl but according to canirunit.com Arma 2 regular should run fine. How do I go about taking the expansion off and trying it?
