My quick review:
The good -
Familiar system. Absolutely love it.
Graphics/art direction - Brilliantly done. The world is stunningly beautiful, and they did an excellent job of giving each area of the world its own distinct vibe and look.
Story - it took me a bit, but it got its hooks in me. Beautifully told and woven together. If this game were an actual movie focusing on the main story I would watch in a heartbeat.
The not so good -
The battle system - I didn't play through FFXII but I did play it a little. Something like the gambit system would fit perfect in this game (do x if enemy over 50% HP, run away if self under 40% HP, etc.) Would fit perfect here. As it stands, without always switching around to micromanage the AI party characters do not make smart decisions especially when it comes to mp usage.
That's the only negative I have with this game. Truly, I haven't played an RPG that has engaged me like this since Final Fantasy IX came out but RPGs are always personal choice.
Total time played to beat the story (and all bounties/tasks until that point) was 34:10, and I still have plenty of game left. If this game had a better battle system it would be near perfect for me. Still will probably be my personal game of the year, and I have it at 8.5/10. Now to fully complete it, then play more old school RPGs until FFXIV:ARR drops, and still waiting for Tales of Xilia & The Witch and the Hundred Knights later this year.
