Just beat the story. Be ready for a FIGHT at the end. Now on to marching to 100% completion.

    My quick review:
    The good -
    Familiar system. Absolutely love it.
Graphics/art direction - Brilliantly done. The world is stunningly beautiful, and they did an excellent job of giving each area of the world its own distinct vibe and look.
Story - it took me a bit, but it got its hooks in me. Beautifully told and woven together. If this game were an actual movie focusing on the main story I would watch in a heartbeat.

    The not so good -
The battle system - I didn't play through FFXII but I did play it a little. Something like the gambit system would fit perfect in this game (do x if enemy over 50% HP, run away if self under 40% HP, etc.) Would fit perfect here. As it stands, without always switching around to micromanage the AI party characters do not make smart decisions especially when it comes to mp usage.

That's the only negative I have with this game. Truly, I haven't played an RPG that has engaged me like this since Final Fantasy IX came out but RPGs are always personal choice.

Total time played to beat the story (and all bounties/tasks until that point) was 34:10, and I still have plenty of game left. If this game had a better battle system it would be near perfect for me. Still will probably be my personal game of the year, and I have it at 8.5/10. Now to fully complete it, then play more old school RPGs until FFXIV:ARR drops, and still waiting for Tales of Xilia & The Witch and the Hundred Knights later this year.

I should be picking this up tomorrow. And my wife and seven week old are going out of town for 6 days. Can't wait!

Can you change difficulty during play?

As someone who hasn't really played an RPG since FFVII and is concerned with the battle system after playing the demo, I want to make sure I can enjoy the game rather than be stuck and give up if Normal is too challenging.

Will check that for you in a sec, but I know the option is in the settings menu when you pause. Just need to see if it can be changed.

          Edit: Yes, you can.

I keep forgetting to play after the cut scenes since I feel so immersed by the graphics. My wife walked in the door earlier and asked me why I was watching a Studio Ghibli movie w/o her. So far the story is on par with the graphics, but I'm not very far into it yet (at Ding Dong Dell).

Started this up. 30 min of story before I had to leave for work.

Walking around gives me A Link To The Past vibe. Good vibe. I regard that title as the single greatest in my personal gaming history.

Put this on my Gamefly queue Monday, still hasn't shipped, and the availability is very low.

                    Hmph.

This game is just very immersive. Love how it switches in and out of cinematic scenes and game play. Love the art.

Story isn't ground breaking stuff but I find myself genuinely interested in it all.

Really getting a hang on the fighting system. The demo never explained the orbs. What a life changing lesson. The opportunity to refill life and magic through attacks just adds a new level to fighting.

Again I'm not familiar with many of these RPG games. Been a long time. This game is pulling me in.

I started the game tonight and played a fun couple hours. Went through the first boss battle. I need more practice fighting, trying to get the hang of running around while meeting up my next command.

Yeah, a Gambit like system would have done the combat wonders. The AI is just poor and it's really annoying during boss battles when you hit All-Out Defend and the AI still fails to block, or retracts and throws a different familiar out instead of blocking. I've experienced this so many times, it really drags the combat down.

I just gave up trying to micromanage and soloed

                          It was so much easier.

Really like most everything else, except for maybe errands to cure broken hearts. Their mostly optional, but become mundane quickly. You want to do them though because the rewards are great, especially the third tier.

I wish there was more Ghibli animation and voiced scenes overall, because what's there is great, but I understand sadly they probably didn't have the budget for it.

They might be switching to a familiar that has the ability to defend. I don't get the lack of VO either, though I do know they only re-recorded the lines that were originally in Japanese.

So does the Japanese Drippy also talk like a crazy Brit?

I mean if you translate his words, does he say things like Bob's Uncle?

I don't know why this concerns me. Just curious. I find him to be amazing. He's such a dick and it makes me laugh.
