    Re: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

The remaster turned out to be a little too much for my PC to handle - I have to drop to low to get a somewhat consistent 60 FPS, and going any higher turns it into a slideshow.

The original stays as its own installation, separate from the special edition, and it's still plenty playable on my system. And as others have mentioned, I don't see huge differences graphically (especially since I have the high-res texture pack). The leap from PS3 to PS4 is probably another matter entirely.

It was free, so no big deal.

Yeah, your system is the minimum requirements. Like Fallout 4, I turned Godrays to low because there's actually little difference between Ultra and Low, but the performance hit is significant.

I used console commands to quickly get into the game and to reveal all map markers, and fast-traveled around to various locations. I switched back and forth from the Special Edition and Legendary Edition for an hour, and the difference was very obvious to me. Again, it's nothing spectacular, but a clear step up.

The Legendary Edition definitely benefits older systems, not mention the sheer number of visual mods that have little impact on performance. You can go with SMIM and Purity and have a game that already looks nearly as good as the Special Edition, and likely better in some areas.

It's going to be a build up for mods and the Special Edition with new Creation Kit not officially releasing until next week and so many mods being dependent on SKSE and Sky UI. The nicest thing about the Special Edition is 64-bit. This is a huge boon to stability and modding. The engine is simply going to be able to handle a lot more and make better use of modern hardware without the need for workarounds. I immediately noticed the lack of micro-stutter when a new cell is loaded. Even using ENB Boost with the Legendary Edition didn't completely solve this.

I've still never beaten the main quest in Skyrim, mostly due to multiple restarts and trying out different mods and just aimlessly wondering around. need to get back in to it. Skyrim is a fun game. I've never even loaded it up since I got my Nvidia 980 a while back along with my 21:9 ultra-wide monitor. curious to see how it'll look.

I'm a few hours in on the remaster (Doing a magic build with some training with range weapons) and I hope I keep it going without a restart.
So used to always being a warrior/fighter (100+ hrs on PC) that I feel like a fish out of water... we'll see

You don't have to restart if you want to use a new mod do you?

I'm only level 5 I think but I did kill two dragons now. I've been eaten far more than that. I will say I really like the world set up. It feels alive with villages and NPCs. I am still quite clueless. I'm a two handed warrior now although I have used my bow.

depends on the mod. some mods change a lot of the game that if you use an in progress game, it'll likely have some bugs. I'm referring to the PC version if it matters. not sure what type of mods will be available on console and the depth they can go.

My experience with Fallout 4 and the mods, which are similar to Skyrim, I mixed and matched constantly. Added mods and deleted many times and never have restarted.

                  This is Xb1.

I'm sad Mod Organizer isn't fully compatible with the Special Edition. I much prefer it over NMM. MO's virtual file system is amazing, as it never touches your data folder. You don't have to worry about installing in the right order and files being overwritten. Solving conflicts is as simple as dragging and dropping, and being able to right-click on a mod and see exactly what's in conflict is brilliant. It's just much more powerful, and this makes it easier to experiment, test, and troubleshoot.

Wow, thanks for the Godrays suggestion, that helped a lot. Actually brings me up to at least a 30 FPS minimum in all the areas I visited, which I find playable enough (that's what the PS4/One version run at, after all).

And, I should probably clarify - when I said I didn't see much difference, I was referring to the Special Edition low preset compared to the original's High/Ultra presets (which at the time, was all I could run). Special's Ultra preset - which is actually playable for me now - is definitely a step up from what I can make original Skyrim look like even with out the godrays.

Special Edition also doesn't suffer from the single most annoying thing for me from the original - the indoor microstuttering which forced me to use a borderless window mod to correct.

What are some good mods on the PS4? I know there aren't as many of them as PC/X1 but downloaded it yesterday and figured I'd ask if anyone else knows.

I always wanted to like Skyrim like I did Oblivion, but I just could never play it for extended periods of time and then when I would come back to it I always forgot everything that was going on.

I turned to Dragon Age Origins and enjoyed it much more. I thought Skyrim almost populated my lists of quests with too much stuff too fast. It's one of those games that I don't think I could balance with more than one other game at the same time.

After The Witcher 3 I've had a hard time enjoying any other RPG so I'll just wait, fight the need to impulsively purchase, and keep an eye out for any discounts down the road. I may even look into getting it on PC since I know my laptop can handle it with ease. If I was that serious about it I would just try to cop a dirt cheap copy of the original on Steam.

I all ready have too much I don't play.

                              I am now a level 15 Wood Elf Archer/Thief

I am enjoying this build more than the my original build that I poured 230 hours into on my PS3 version. That character was a Destruction mage named Moses.

So with Seratus I of course have the main quest going but after my ascent to High Horthgar to see the Grey Beards I made my way east to Riften and am now a full fledged member of the Thieves Guild. We shall bring glory back to the Guild. Once I obtain the Skeleton Key I shall keep it for the remainder of my adventures across the land of Skyrim. Only when I have done every single quest And have my fill will I turn it in to complete the Thieves Guild Questline.

I plan on doing the Dark Brotherhood after the Thieves Guild Quests (but before I turn in the key).

The main story will also be adventured between these two quest lines. I never did the Bards nor the Companions on PS3 and may go ahead and do both of those this time around.

Then of course once I complete the main story I will dive into Dawnguard and the Dragon Born DLC.

I also plan to live two lives. I have my eye on a beautiful Redguard babe in Whiterun whom I will marry. She will live in either Breezhome in Whiterun or Proudspire Estate in Solitude.

She will never know I am a member of the Thieves Guild or The Dark Brotherhood.
                              Now Playing on PS5:

There's one thing in particular that turning the godrays, even down to medium, did for me. In Whiterun pretty much every building has a campfire of sorts as a light source, and anytime I looked at one of those with Godrays on high I dropped to about 10-15 FPS which is a point most people consider "lag". Something in the fire effect was just roasting my GPU. Medium takes care of that problem.

Game's not so bad at 30 FPS - and it does look pretty. I just used Rivatuner to lock the framerate since the AMD Catalyst control isn't working.
