Re: Dead Island
I rented it on the 360 to see if it'd even be worth it for $5-$15 off of Steam later.
Instantly the game has Cloverfield syndrome.
To quote Ben Affleck in Dogma...
"More than that I'm afraid that not-a-one of you passes for a decent human being. Your continued exsistence is a mockery of morality."
When I saw Cloverfield within in 10 minutes I wanted every single one of those people to die horrible, horrible deaths.
Now here we have...
A spoiled ex-football player that killed a girl in a drunk driving street race. Who isn't in jail because...? And as if there isn't enough of these *****s in real life. Plus in the intro he appears to be extremely rude and disrespectful on top of that. Also he just looks stupid.
An ex-cop who killed a child molester illegally,off-duty and was disbarred. Know what? That's fine. What's not fine is she's foul mouthed, ugly and has a hideous tattoo. Again in the intro she's also very rude and disrespectful. Looking like she's from Jamaica but having an Aussie accent was a bit of a throw off too.
A washed up one hit wonder rapper. Has a nice look. I like his song. Good to this point...and thennnnnn...alcohol and drug abuser. No thanks.
Then we have a nice Chinese lady. She's helping out in the intro. She's a hotel employee. She's an ex-cop as well. However is also ugly, has an outfit as hideous as that other girls tattoo and above all she's a Chinese spy so should also be in jail.
None of these characters are likable or relateable.
I went with the Chinese girl as she was the least offensive.
The good news is the gameplay isn't anywhere near as bad as it appeared. It can be fun even. Like drowning a zombie in a pool. That's awesome. Throwing a knife in a zombie's eye is also quite amusing However the 1st person camera is even more of a nuisance than it appeared. Especially during combat.
The terrible characters are even more of a shame because the setting is fantastic. Sadly the map isn't. There's a side quest to get a guy some booze. I gave him what I had but nothing happend. Next to the main quest there was a marker that showed me there was some in the same buliding as my destination. So no big, just grab it there. After I grabbed it and the main quest item there's no icon to get back to the guy. The only icon is to turn in the main quest. I now only have a vauge idea of where this guy is. Even setting it to active doesn't bring it up. There's no sort of companion marker either. I helped someone out and he said I should follow him. I wanted to but I stopped to look in a store for items then couldn't find him anymore.Comment

Re: Dead Island
Well you do see them in the cutscenes actually so their terrible outfits, stupid tattoos and uglyness still have an effect, just less.
Yes characters matter to me. If I'm going to be playing with them for 20 hours there had better be something to like about them. I should WANT them to get off of the island, not just because it's the goal of the game but because I find something to like about them and have hope for them and I should WANT to play as them especially as this is considered a role playing game. We've got an *******,****,drug/alcohol abuser and a foreign spy. If the point of the game is to survive I should want the characters to survive. What reason do I have for wanting any of these people to be safe? None because they suck.

I'm enjoying it. Like I said, played about an hour. The questing is a little confusing, but it's fun. I'm playing as the ex QB. Haven't found anything to throw yet, though.Michigan WolverinesChicago White SoxComment

Re: Dead Island
I got this for PC today - via DVD-ROM (not Steam) - and I'm having strange stuttering/freezing problems with it. So much that the game is unplayable. I also have some scratchy sound issues.
I have a Core i5-2600 processor and an Nvidia GTX 560 video card with a gig of memory on it and 8 Gigs of system RAM, and I'm using my motherboard's onboard sound. I can run Borderlands fine.
I'm not sure if I can chalk this up to the bugginess of the game that I've heard about or something else. The PC patch I think is supposed to hit on Friday, so hopefully that will fix the issues."We were expecting a miracle with Elite, but instead we got Jesus at halfcourt."

I have to question the plausibility of drowning a zombie.Comment

I'm only about an hour into the game, but I'm thinking that maybe all of these terrible people are on the Island because they are supposed to be. Maybe a LOST type thing, or something.

You can throw anything. Just hold LT and press RT. Sticks, knives, paddles, whatever you get your hands on. Probably not a gun but I haven't come across one yet.
Aye,but it's fun. This game has good corpse floating.Comment

Re: Dead Island
I find myself enjoying the game a lot so far. There are a few glitches like the one mentioned before where the guy asked for Booze and when given, nothing happens. I even went and got more, it said quest finished, but its still incomplete. And Idk if this is a glitch or not, but I helped out one guy and he gave me a gun. I pressed the button to get the gun, and It was not in my inventory, nor could it be found.
A few minor glitches, but I never base a game off miniscule things like that because they can be easily fixed. All in all this game is effin awesome.NHL - Pittsburgh Penguins

You and a friend of mine have Nvidia cards and you both have frame and stutter issues with certain games....
Nvidia isn't what it use to be man, if your trying to run an awesome PC like you have...Get ATi Card and play games like they are suppose to be.
I got the PC version too, and when you see the videos I'm doing for Youtube your going to be at awwww with no frame drops.Comment

Re: Dead Island
Update: Deep Silver hass responded to our inquiries with the following statement:
"We deeply regret that an incorrect version of Dead Island was inadvertently made available to players on Steam launch in North America. We are very sorry for any issues you may have experienced while playing the game - the correct, patched version will be made available to North American players ASAP."
I just checked my Steam copy of the game, and the shortcuts i used no longer work. Nor does my save game.Ⓥ Boston Red Sox | Miami DolphinsComment

Though I did experience an actual glitch when being pulled back into an area like there was a bungee cord attached to the character. I eventually got out of it.
This is more like Borderlands with zombies instead of Fallout with zombies. Right down to the annoying respawns.Comment

Re: Dead Island
Not a glitch. Just a very unclear quest. You have to keep giving them to him. A LOT.
