I'll take a look at the dev diaries, but qq, what is the complexity level of EU4 compared to CK2? Are you constrained to somewhat realistic history or could you start out small and take over Europe?Comment

I've always thought EU series was much simpler than the CK series, but I've seen other people say differently. I started playing paradox games with the EU series, so I may just be used to it I guess. now, Hearts of Iron series, that is a complex game and have never been able to get into it.
The history is not forced, although they are several historical events throughout the game. There is a feature called lucky nations(may be called something else in EUIV), that gives some bonuses to certain nations(like England, France, Russia, Ottomans) to help them achieve what they did in history, but that is an option that can be turned on/off. but other than that, you can do whatever you want. take a 1 province nation and conquer the world if you can. The AI might start to hate you as you would likely be expanding aggressively though.Comment

religious state of Europe. Britannia is split between Norse and Catholic. While most of the leaders are Norse, there are many Catholic provinces and counts. Also the Emperor of Brittania is currently in the Swedish prison, who is Catholic.
Slavic Pagan is big in Northeast, mostly because of Russia(me), but Poland has been Slavic the entire time as well. Lithuania is the sole nation that is Romuva pagan. Suomenusko pagan is all but whiped out now, and Tengri nations are shrinking as Hungaray has been in trouble lately completely surrounded by other relgions and the Cumans are getting killed by Sunni Turks invaders. Georgia is currently the strongest Tengri nation. Tengri and Slavic have both been reformed. no other pagans have so far. Lithuania has 3 of their 5 holy sites needed, but I think they lack the religious authority and/or piety to reform.
Orthodox is shrinking as Byzantium is the only major nation that follows it now since Bulgaria switch to Catholic. Byzantium have been getting attacked by Muslims and Tengri Georgia.
While Catholic have been making some gains in the north with Sweden converting, they have all but lost the Iberian Peninsula. Asturias has been cut off from the rest of the Catholic world.
Culture map of Europe. Russian expanding east and a bit south, but nearly half is still non-Russian, though most of the ruling families are Russians. The Norse that settled in Brittany have shifted to become Normans. they also became Catholic.
England is a mess of cultures. with some Normans, Anglo-Saxons, and Norse.
Turkish forming in the far east and somehow Frankish spread to southern Russia(next to Bulgaria), still not sure how that happened as that land were ruled by Bulgarians before I got them, and before that I believe Hungary controlled it.
In Scandinavia, Swedish and Norwegian cultures have started to form from Norse.Comment

If I pre-order EU IV now, do I get CK2 immediately? I tried HOI3 but it is very overwhelming and I think these would be a better way to get off on a good foot with these games.Comment

holy crap. only 25 years later in my Russia game:
Britannia has taken over Scandinavia. Seljuks took over the Cumans, Francia got a little bigger. Georgia turned Shia Muslim. I just got done with a massive rebellion after my ruler died and left his 11 year old son in charge. I managed to win after capturing the rebel leaders in battle, so it ended fairly quickly. my new Tsar just turned 16, so I hope it's a long reign for Tsar Valdamir II.
I expect Norse to be reformed soon though since they control all that land now. hopefully they do and it lasts, it'll be interesting to see that in EUIV. I was hoping Tengri would lasts, but it seems they are on the way out as Hungary was the last Tengri nation left and they are about to go down to Bulgaria and rebellions. Poland staying strong for now.
I warred with Byzantium a couple of times to get some more land in the south to clean the borders up down there.
Francia's ruler is 62, so it shouldn't be too much longer for him to die and split the HRE and Francia Empires up through Gavelkind. I'm hoping Britannia will do the same and create the Scandinavia empire then have it split.Comment

update on my Russia game, Britannia reformed Norse religion, so we have a reformed Norse, Slavic and Tengri religions. Hungary survived their attacks and they still exist. they just wont go away, which I like. I kind of want them to survive and import into EUIV as reformed Tengri.
Francia's ruler died, but he got a son and only 1, so his son inherited both empires. dang.Comment

update on my Russia game
Brittannia is a mess. Norway and Sweden got independence, and now British Isle is in a massive revolt.
I've taken 2 duchies away from Lithuania, but they have also gain some land in Finland. I've been invaded multiple times in the last 35+ years. everyone wants land in the Empire of Russia it seems. luckily I have 12K retinue army, 7K personal levy, plus about 70K in vassel levies.
Hungary have exploded back into power and wiped out Bulgaria and took some land from Poland. Francia keeps getting lucky in that their ruler always seems to only have 1 son, so the Empires of Francia and HRE never splits. It is still under a Agnatic Gavelkind succession law.
It's just out of the screenshot, but the Byzantine Empire has fallen, Constantinople is under Muslim control and Orthodoxy seems to be in danger of extinction.Comment
