    Re: Crusader Kings II

So after seeing all Solidice has done with Russia I decided to start my own game as Rurik. I figured it would be something fun to import to EU4 (and I'm using Sunset invasion on this game. Which is supposed to have a very different South America in EU4). I'm no where near where he is because it's been a struggle so far. Rurik died fairly early into the game during a battle. His son currently has phenomena so he will probably die soon. Currently my ruler has 3 daughters 2 of which with the quick trait so of course my primary heir is the one that doesn't.

My plan is to form Kingdom of Rus and then try to reform Slavic religion to get rid of gavelkind succession and then subjugation of the world

EDIT:Well my ruler survived phenomena but well 3 concubines later and he has 8 daughters...no sons

    Spoiler

This is my other game where I started as the Duke of Brittany.

    Spoiler

The pictures don't show it well but I control the duchies of Flanders and Holland. I've also inherited the kingdom of Asturias.

I'm going to stop playing here because I think the world is in a really interesting time and would make a fun game in EU4. There is no real empire mostly all the religions are intact (none of the pagans are reformed which is disappointing). Also Brittany is in a really nice position with also of coastal ground a chance to take over what would be Portugal and allow me to colonize and play the mainland Europe game in EU4.

      Re: Crusader Kings II

yeah, I had some lucky wars early on that enabled me to expand quickly. nearly the entire de jure Kingdom of Ruthenia was control by Kiev, so when I declared subjugation on Ruthenia on them, I had just about the entire de jure lands of Ruthenia which was about twice by current land I had at the time.

With my current strength, I could easily conquer Europe before the end of the game. I don't really want to do that though, I plan to import this save to EUIV and I don't want to be too powerful at the start of EUIV.

        Re: Crusader Kings II

My current game started as Count Guifre of Rosello (Wilfred the Hairy) starting in 867 (Old Gods). He starts with a single county but also has a barony in nearby Urgell so has a good base. He is a vassal of the Duke of Barcelona which is part of the Kingdom of Aquitaine at that time. He holds a strong claim to the duchy of Barcelona so my first goal was to become Duke of Barcelona.

        Spoiler

The Counts of Mallorca and Menorca started a faction to make my youngest brother Duke. I didn't join the faction but plotted to murder the current Duke. I wasn't set to inherit anything from him but murdering the current liege usually causes chaos which is what I wanted. I bribed his Spymaster which made killing him much easier than expected. His 2 year old son became Duke and ironically made me Regent. At first I thought this was a good thing but found out that being Regent is pretty much useless. He inherited his father's 3 counties, 2 of which he gave away to other Counts. This complicated matters a little bit because now there were two Counts who liked the current Duke and had bigger armies than I did.

The faction for my brother declared war and the armies of Barcelona sailed off to Mallorca. They were evenly matched but the Barcelona army had much better generals. As soon as the battle started I declared war on the Duke and placed Barcelona under siege. The Duke's army defeated Mallorca quicker than anticipated so I had to hire a mercenary army to keep them off my back. The mercenaries made me broke but pretty much wiped out the Duke's army so it was worth it. After the siege of Barcelona ended I was able to enforce my demands, become Duke and lock my predecessor in my dungeon.

Even though I'm now the Duke my current situation is a little tenuous. The prior Duke is still Count of Barcelona and my two vassals that hold two counties are not my biggest fans. I can't revoke their counties because I'll lose a war against them and I can't revoke Barcelona because I have a truce. I could banish the Count of Barcelona but that will make my vassals hate me even more. Meanwhile the faction for my brother popped back up after I became Duke.

One of the 2 county guys is in his 50's and doesn't have any heirs. As his liege this makes me his heir so I may wait for him to die while my levies refresh. I'm also debating whether or not my brother needs to die. If that faction declares war I might be in trouble.

Also hoping the Umayyads who control most of Iberia leave me alone for now. Barcelona is still a part of Aquitaine for now so I think I am safe with the Carolingians behind me. Their dynasty is a huge power during this time period controlling pretty much all of France, Germany and Italy.

        Spoiler

On the bright side I needed a better Marshall so I married my sister matrilinealy to the best general available who was a prince from the nearby Kingdom of Navarra. Turns out his father was really old and his brother was a maimed cripple. They both died and he became King of Navarra. Not quite sure how this works but I think because it was a matrilineal marriage if they have kids my dynasty will be in line to inherit the Kingdom of Navarra. The prince already had 2 kids that aren't of my dynasty so they might need to go at some point but I'll wait to see if they have a kid first.

          Re: Crusader Kings II

wow, look at how the religious situation is right now in 1090 AD.

Norse in the North(and starting to have presence in Spain), Slavic in the Northest, Muslim controls all the south, Tengri in the middle, still some province in the east(but the land is controlled by Sunni Muslim right now). Orthodox is near it's end.

but the biggest surprise, The big chunk of Waldensian religion, which is a heresy of Catholicism. The pope, as far as I can tell, doesn't control any major land(and he is not in Rome). he has to be somewhere though as he call for a crusade right before I took this screen. The Republic of Almafi seems to be the last remaining normal Catholic nation left.

This should end up being a really different EUIV experience.

            Re: Crusader Kings II

1115 AD at the end of today's playthrough.

I've personally expanded west by conquering Lithuania, all the land is nearly converted already as well. one of my vassels went nuts in the north and took over most of De Jure Finland on his own. So I rewarded him with the title King of Finland. So I now have 6 Kingdoms under my Empires, with a 7th Kingdom(Rus) still in my possession.

Crusades and Great Holy Wars have started:

Catholic Crusade was called for Aquitaine, it failed.

Slavic Great Holy War called for Pomerania, it failed despite my efforts to defeat Francia. Francia has well over 230k troops, that was more than me and Poland combined.

Norse had a Great Holy War for France, it didn't last very long and failed.

Tengri tried to Great Holy War me for one of my Kingdoms(I forget how to spell it, "Volga" something). The Tengri religion leader is apparently in the middle of my territory, so I just siege and captured him. lol it ended very fast.

Norse Britannia is starting to take over the Iberian Peninsula. It seems Francia destroyed the Holy Roman Empire title, so there is no threat of Francia splitting now from Gavelkind.

Byzantium is starting to make a comeback, Hungary getting bigger, although Poland started a war to regain some land and I help them out(my current ruler's sister is married to the Polish King). Poland also took some more of Denmark on their own.

The Seljuk dynasty fell, but then came back into power. The rulers of Armenia has become Turkish culture, still Sunni Religion.

I'm sure you guys get a lot of these, but do you think I would enjoy this game and EU4? I'm thinkin' of getting EU4 since CK2 is included.
I've never played a Paradox game, however I was addicted to Total War: Medieval II. I loved the battles, which I understand in Paradox games is more of a dice roll in their games?
I sorta enjoyed TW outside of battles.

I know the new TW: Rome II is coming out, but I don't have the money right now to spend on a laptop that could play it well.
              Thank you =)

there is a demo for CKII available on steam, I'm not sure what it all has in it and it would likely be a very old build, so it wouldn't be the best comparison to what the game would be, but it should give you an idea.

new patch expected next week along with a customizer DLC.

the customizer DLC will allow you to rename any title. That'll be nice.

                        Re: Crusader Kings II

No new screens but here's the latest from Barcelona...

My sister who is now Queen of Navarra (matrilineal) had two sons so I started a plot to murder his older brother who is not of my dynasty. In the meantime the Umayyads attacked Navarra and won easily taking the county away from King Antso. He usurped another county from one of his Dukes. The duke took out his revenge by joining my plot and helping me kill Antso's son and heir. My nephew became heir and Antso, who apparently was wounded fighting the Umayyads, died soon after (I had nothing to do with it!) and my nephew became King of Navarra.

This didn't go exactly as planned though. Even though he is a member of my dynasty he apparently remains independent because he inherited a title that was higher than my current title. Navarra is in real trouble now. They're down to two counties and I expect the Umayyads to make short work of them before I can get involved. They'd be a lot safer if I took over Navarra but I'm not sure what I can even do at this point short of murdering my two nephews and hoping I fall into the line of succession at some point.

Meanwhile in Barcelona I had a little bit of a problem with vassal opinion. I was able to bring one around by making him Marshall. I also got the brave trait fighting in a war for Aquitaine and had a son both of which helped with my vassals. The other 2 county Count still hates me but we'll deal with him later.

The faction to make my brother Duke declared war but they had weak holdings so didn't provide much of a challenge. I was able to win quickly and revoke two counties. I also decided to deal with the tyranny penalty and revoke Barcelona from the former Duke who was still in my prison. I banished him and moved my capital to Barcelona. This gave me 4 of the 8 counties in my de facto duchy. The other 4 counties are split between 2 counts one of which is my Marshall and loves me. He's in his fifties without any heirs and is celibate so I expect to inherit those soon.

I'm not sure what direction to go next. I want to become independent from Aquitaine and form the Kingdom of Aragon but I need a few more counties in the de jure kingdom to do so. I have de jure claims on 2 counties controlled by the Umayyads but I don't think I'm strong enough to take them on without the backing of the Carolingians.

Their has been some infighting among the Carolingian kingdoms in the past few years so may be worth seeing how that plays out. I picked up a weak claim on the duchy of Toulouse so may be able to expand further north even though that wasn't my original plan.

For now I'm going to wait until my vassal count dies so I inherit his counties. After that happens I'll probably revoke the two counties from my other vassal. He is likely to revolt but won't have the strength to put up much of a fight. After that I'll re-organize since most of my vassals are Frankish (i'm Catalan) and two of the counties in my demesne are the islands of Menorca and Mallorca which are pretty weak.

I'll have to get a screen shot of my game, around 950 AD and except for France it is completely different. I finally got all of Ireland after getting an Ally in France and they showed up and kicked Denmark's butt. I was about to offer peace after I started the war for the last county as Denmark called in some Norse allies and had a much larger army.

Russia only has 2-3 counties and Brittanny is 1 county.

Its not really like Risk. You can play this many different ways. You can play this and never have to fight a war. War is costly and you don't get a lot of money to hire armies and otherwise you are limited in your army. So war is usually the last resort if you can't get what you want with marriage, political, or assassinations.

I was attacked by what you would call Scotland today who is Norse and I also had taken over some counties in Ireland that were Norse and converted them. They had a huge army and I had no allies that I could call to fight, around 10,000 vs 2,000. I had to pay some mercenaries which cost around 150 for smaller size ones just to keep fighting. 500 is a lot of money for smaller reigns. That battle made me have to take out a loan because I lost all funds. Thankfully I won and then the Pope gave me like 250 for fighting so much against the Pagans.

I've played around with the game and while it is well made... I just can't seem to get into it like I have with EUIII. I like the House Dynasty aspect of the game, but the idea of a nation-state just wasn't around during that time. I am really excited about EUIV coming out soon though.

                            Hopefully with MEIOU later on.
