I have no idea, I don't believe it was even taken advantage of at my store.

      "We're taking in working laptops."

      "Word here's a broken laptop."

"What're you dumb? We said working. Here's a gift card."

      Customer the idiot there?

No, you are wrong. If it was not a working laptop I wouldn't have brought it in in the first place because I am not a dishonest person and wouldn't do something like that. However, if it was within the parameters of the advertisement and an employee rejected it I most certainly would have asked for a supervisor if it had been refused though.

The customer is not always right. I worked in customer service and I know how they will take advantage of things if you let them. But on the flip side you cannot blame customers for businesses not correctly making their associates aware of a promotion and what is and is not acceptable.

To believe that all customers are lying scumbags who will take advantage of a store is wrong, the majority of them will just see "trade in an old laptop" and take theirs in, again figuring if the store takes it then it's acceptable."

Just a note - there's a huge difference between being a difficult and entitled troublemaker who just makes customer service people's lives difficult and knowing what rights and recourse you have as a consumer, a distinction you must have difficulty making.

You can most certainly be someone who knows their rights without being entitled or a jack@ss about it. In fact, you specifically do not want to do that because doing that gives the business reason to ask you to leave and be well within their rights to do so. You have to know when to escalate and how to do so effectively. If you really feel the customer associate is wrong then ask for someones supervisor. If you feel they are wrong ask for their manager. If all else fails, don't hesitate to write to corporate for a resolution.

And if that fails then you always have the option to open a case with the Better Business Bureau or even write to the Attorney General of the state (this would be the state in which the business resides btw) and file a formal complain, which I have done before. It is easy, costs nothing and takes 10 minutes to do. If they get enough complaints and/or find egregious issues they may even shut the business down completely.

Know your rights and stand up for yourself, no one else is going to.

I know this thread is getting derailed, but I am familiar with your work and curious as to what rights of yours have been trampled on that have made you "stand up" for yourself?

Best Buy couldn't care less about their rating with a corrupt private institution (the BBB).

I'm just speaking in general if you have issues at a store you need to know how to deal with the situation. Many people just feel they have no recourse and that isn't true. Consumers have rights.

Oh I know BBB rating is worthless but many people use it as a way to gauge a business, especially the older crowd that aren't hip to Yelp! and Twitter and the like.

And yes, most businesses, especially larger ones like Best Buy most certainly do care about BBB reports. When they are filed you will find that most respond very quickly to your report.

I'm sure BB tracks what they're giving out per promotion and tripped some value where they decide it's not worth it....can't hate on them for closing loopholes or not doing something profitable.

Same with Gamestop and the trick where you could turn a few games into 500 bucks if you were willing to hop around stores.
