Re: Mafia 3
Two things. Having just reached the end game where I'm left with just having to kill Giorgi and Sal, I love the change in music to more hard rock versions of the songs. That was a nice, unexpected change.
Second, now I'm really starting to see the crashing issue. Ever since I got this game, I had only experienced a crash maybe twice. Today alone (Saturday), I have 5 ****ing crashes. Two came in the middle of missions, one came during the cutscenes after the riverboat mission while saving (thank god it didn't corrupt my save, though I had to re-kill Lou all over again) and I had another just now when I was ONE ******* block away from completing my final ".45 In My Hand" mission.
I have no clue why the hell I'm suddenly having crashes seemingly every other hour today, but yeah, I can see now why it pissed some people off and why they quit the game, having to deal with that all the time.
Edit - Well, now I have no clue on the music. After reloading the game following the crash, all of the radio stations are back to their normal songs same as they were all game long. Not sure how to get the cover versions of the songs back, which is rather disappointing.

Re: Mafia 3
Yeah, game seems to have a lot of technical issues. And the free DLC content is still nowhere to be found. It will be interesting to see if 2K moves on from the game once the sales for October come in and aren't what they were expecting/hoping.Comment

Re: Mafia 3
Despite being out for nearly a month, apparently discussion of the story in this game still falls under "spoiler" territory for some reason. I can't say I agree, but whatever.
End of game discussion takes place within, enter at your own risk, you've been warned, turn back now, avoid your eyes, all that bull.
SpoilerWell, just finished the game. As has been said, the story is an absolute 10 in my opinion. I think the only thing I thought could have been done different, was leaving Sal to sit there at the end. The thought just seemed to have more impact.
Sure, it was a story of revenge, but what could be better revenge than leaving Sal in that situation? His rackets are gone, his control is gone, his money is gone, his casino hopes are destroyed, his entire family is dead including, probably the most devastating of losses to him, Giorgi, he's all alone, and like he told Giorgi after killing Olivia, he's got no one left loyal to him, his own men would kill in hopes of jumping to the top of the mountain if he stuck his head out. If the Commission didn't kill him first. So I almost think Lincoln leaving him to his fate would have had more impact than actually killing him.
As it was, he actually made the choice for me. I was a little slow in killing him, so he instead grabbed the gun and popped himself in the head.
Now I'll have to look into playing through again the future. I decided to stay and take over, and kept everyone alive and ruled together. So I'll have to do another playthrough where I kill off two underbosses and then probably kill the last one at the end and rule alone. Then a third playthrough choosing to leave the city.
One thing that has me wondering, the very end with the Senate hearing and the whole Kennedy assassination conspiracy. Was that just supposed to be sort of a surprise ending, or is that meant to tie into the DLC or maybe a future Mafia 4?
And just sort of realizing, after loading back into the game, there is literally no endgame after killing Sal and choosing to stay or leave. Other than increasing my kickbacks, there's nothing to do but maybe get into shootouts with cops or the random pocket of 3 or 4 enemies in a building. So, unless they ever release DLC, I guess I'm shelving the game for at least a month or two until I decide to plow through the story again and experience the other endings.

Re: Mafia 3
So, I've played this at a slower pace than most. I'm 15 hours in and just took over the base districts before you get some real choices. At this point I think the story is great from the voice acting to the way scenes are animated, presented, etc. It's all movie like quality. The atmosphere is great. The soundtrack is up there with Vice City.
The lighting is funky. At night, the game looks beautiful. During the day it looks washed out at times. Some textures look AAA quality, then randomly some textures look like they're from 2011. The gunplay is not bad, not great. The cover system is simple, but animates well, and does what it is intended to do without ever being annoying. The cars are nice to look at, driving(on simulation) is fun.
Overall, I am really enjoying the game. Outside of daytime lighting, my only other issue so far has been the AI. Everything I think is great.
The AI is just dumb. That's all there is to it. You can bust open a door and they don't even care. They need to see doors that are open, investigate, get everyone alert, etc. The same needs to be done for blood they spot, bodies they see, and guns lying around that used to be on a living person. They have no hearing at all, they're vision cones are too thin and too short.
The AI in this game(and any game of this nature) really needs a few things to make them 100x better. Like I mentioned, their vision is bad. I'd rather face AI that can spot me from a mile away if they are facing that direction than what this game presents. If I have to wait until their backs are facing me, then so be it. That would be better and more challenging than being able to walk right towards someone facing me and still remaining hidden.
Lincoln is loud. When you sneak around and hear his boots coming, the AI doesn't. There is no need to move slowly because you'll never be heard. Again, I'd rather the AI have ultra hearing that forces me to be extremely slow over how it is now. Humans in real life can see and hear other humans real well. I hate how games like this dumb the AI down so much to make these sneak sessions not seem like a chore.
If the AI could spot you realistically, hear you realistically, and investigated things like open doors, blood pools, and guns lying around, they'd immediately be that much better. Make them act a lot smarter when alert. Make the AI communicate constantly when in search mode. You take one out, they realize he is silent now, they now know in what general area you were last so they can try to corner you. You can set up flanks and ambushes using this system in a more realistic manner than just whistling and killing 20 people in one room in the same fashion.
I'd also like to see the AI stay in groups more often in every situation. Have them search in pairs, watching each other's back. Have them stand around talking even if it is repetitive conversations. People tend to be social. I absolutely hate how in games of this nature two people will talk for 12 seconds, then one guy stays where he is standing awkwardly in the center of a room doing nothing while the other guy goes and stands in a corner, facing the wall 2 feet in front of him smoking a cigarette. That's not how people act. Just make the AI act like basic social humans.
Those few changes alone would completely alter the gameplay for this game in a huge, positive way. Unfortunately that won't happen in a patch. I understand that, but I just felt like semi-venting about it. Hopefully soon AI takes a huge leap for all video games because it has been way way way too long since we had a real AI leap. It's all graphics or world size these days that are making strides, but never the AI.“No one is more hated than he who speaks the truth.”

Re: Mafia 3
Mafia 3 patch dropped yesterday. Hope to get some impressions to see if it's worth picking up again.

Re: Mafia 3
ZB9, Daniel- I redboxed it over the weekend and I didn't notice much improvement from a graphical standpoint (especially in car reflections which they hinted at being improved). After playing titanfall 2 and now watchdogs 2- this game just looks borderline ugly to me. I can't say I played it long enough to really comment on the A.I. over the weekend but on 1st impressions I think the enemy A.I. is a little more aware of you (on Hard setting). I recommend you guys redbox this title 1st before throwing down $60.(Xbox One Impressions)EA and 2k have the unfortunate task of trying to balance on a tightrope of fun and sim while trying not to fall 10,000 feet to their death.
