Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)
Finally played and beat this over the last few days. The crazy thing is as brutal as the game is as a whole, the hardest thing to watch for me was still "clip her wings" which was like the first clip we ever got of the game. The gameplay felt great, I strongly dislike stealth so having the ability to go in and out of stealth so quickly and have it feel as as smooth as it did was dope. Sniping guys from the grass with a bow and arrow from the grass was a lot more fun than I expected. I'd probably rate it higher than Ghosts in my GOTY rankings, but I'm not sure. Ori still #1.
Spoiler
I honestly had no idea people were so attached to Joel, I never really cared all that much for him. Jare said it earlier in the thread, but it's just a matter of perspective. To the daughter of the doctor you killed to save the girl you claim as your own, it doesn't matter if he was tortured, if it was a quick death, if he had a knife to your neck, you killed her father. The one thing that threw me off in a kinda Cerberus from Mass Effect 1 to 2 kinda way was the portrayal of the Fireflies. I feel like in the first game they weren't shown to be all that organized, and the idea that even with Ellie that they would be able to create a cure was not clear. Either way, there was always a reading of the first game where Joel was a villain.
From there, him getting his skull bashed in didn't bother me. Immediately though, I was confused at Ellie and Tommy surviving, didn't think they'd let them live. Seeing that Abby was basically just in a trance and said screw it let's leave made it make a little more sense to me and is probably why I liked her. She knew what she wanted to do, found the guy, killed him, and moved on. In comparison, Ellie goes on this wild chase to find here, kills all the people she does en route, then Abby spares her again. At that point I was just like you can't be serious when heading back to Santa Barbara. Part of the thing there is the game as it goes on IMO kinda undermines Ellie's revenge mission. At first I'm thinking it's because she doesn't know why Joel got hunted down, but no she knows he lied to her so she understands why someone would want to kill him. Then it's she feels guilty for the way things ended, but they had a decent conversation starting towards reconciliation the day before he died, it didn't end all bad.
I'll say as far as the "revenge is bad" trope, I think Red Dead handled it much better, but they had the benefit of starting their version 10 years ago and having it stretch over 80 hours altogether. Part of the problem with this game for me is trying to do too much. I said before I was never attached to Ellie and Joel, so if this game would've just been Abby leading up to the Joel hunt and then following her through basically the same story with Ellie hunting her in the background I probably would've been happier. After playing the first one it was evident that it didn't need a sequel. Still feel the same way now, but this was a solid attempt at it.Originally posted by G PericoIf I ain't got it, then I gotta take it

Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)
Just finished my second play through. It was better in some places and worse in others this time. Were it goes off the rails for me is:
SpoilerTo much time wasted with Lev and her sister. Once they cut down Abby and she gets them safely back to that trailer that should have been it. They are both forgettable characters and WAY to much time was wasted with them in the game. They could have still given us 10 hours with Abby but just give us something worth playing. Traveling around with Lev gave Druckman the opportunity to push his views on us but it wasn't really necessary or interesting. I believe the game would have been better if Abby's part was more about her going after Ellie instead of wasting all that time looking for a med kit to bring back to Mel.
After Abby kills Joel they could of had us escape with Ellie and Tommy then that would send Abby off after them. They could still keep all the aquarium stuff just eliminate the 6 or 7 hours of the Lev and her sister story.
There really are some parts of the game that are brilliant it's just the part I mentioned above didn't work for me. Both times through I just wanted that part to be over with. With 7 years between games 1&2 they should have come up with a much better story. I up my rating from a 4 to a 6 out of 10. But overall still feel the game is a let down.Last edited by JMD; 07-31-2020, 04:04 AM.Comment

Re: The Last of Us Part 2 (PS4)
This isn't really a spoiler question, but I remember there at least being one moment where you encounter some baddies attempting to kill somebody else. If you kill them before they kill that person, can you save them? Can you get a trophy for it? Hmm, I wonder.
Early on I was wondering if you could shoot non-dog animals, maybe get something for killing a bunch of different times. I tried to shoot perched a bird once, and it went right through it as it flew away afterward. So I'm guessing things like the squirrels in Seattle aren't shootable, haha.
I wish the physical copy of this game came with a scratch-n-sniff pad, for each time that the characters enter some room and start complaining about the smell (normally of rotting corpses). It would really add an immersion to the game, maybe even get some people to throw up heh.

I'm guessing this spelling wasn't intentional, but this instantly brought me back to a classic OS thread:

That was another major gripe that I had and that none of the side characters they introduced were likeable and interesting. Which is the direct opposite from what ND usually does the little girl with the pizza at the start of lost legacy comes to mind. They also were so many of them you didn't even get time to really flesh them out. I don't see how you can deny the reasons the side characters and so many of them exist.Retro Redemption - Starting over with a oldschool PowerBone Offense
